Does anyone have any experience buying a cable box on Ebay? I have Cox Digital Cable and am tired of paying every month for a box rental. If I get the same model box as the ones I already have, does anyone know if there will be any problem hooking it up and getting it to work?

I think the cable boxes work similarly to cable modems. Only the boxes that the cable company has authorized will work. It may depend on your cable company, but I would bet they will say no. Renting is actually a good deal, because as technology progresses, you can just ask for a newer cable box, but if you buy your own, you have to buy a new one, or live with the old one.

More specifically, cable modems only need to be activated with a MAC address and a call to the cable company. Though it is likely it would be possible from a technical standpoint, it is extremely likely they will just say no.

I stopped using the cable box that cox had and got myself an TV tuner/video card because i didn't want to pay for TIVo and the cox cable box. I connected the computer to the TV so now it has a good screen.
