I figured this out (and if you have too then ignore the post). All you have to do is install from the CDROM the 'Image Converter' package.

I ran that, loaded up the 'dog.mpg' that it installed (I had to do a 'find' on the PC to figure out where the heck it was... :) made sure I was all setup from running the 'MSimport' from the NZ90 so my memory stick was a removable drive on my PC and started it.

The software turned the dog.mpg into one of those .mqv files that live in your memory stick under /MQ_ROOT/100MQV01 (at least that's what it was called in my memory stick) and now I can view it via the movie player application. The cool thing is that shrunk the size down. The 'dog.mpg' file was ~5.4Mb on the PC and only ~1.9 in the memory stick.

I then tried it with a 'Family Guy' episode that I had in QuickTime (.mov) format that was ~58Mb in size. In this case it seemed to make it bigger (and actually it couldn't fit since I didn't have enough room on my 128Mb stick). It took a good 20-30 minutes to turn the QuickTime movie into a .mqv and put it on the stick.... and it errored out due to lack of space before it finished.

But when I ran the movie player program sure enough there was the Family Guy episode... looking pretty smooth. I lost the end I think... but this was just a test. It ended up eating up 61Mb on the memory stick though.

So there's got to be a a way to do this same exercise and not take up so much space. Althought I suppose it won't be as important if I get a 1Gb memory stick... :) But that's not going to happen anytime soon. Let me pay off my current credit card first! :)

terrycm - I assume you mean the 'kinoma producer' and not the plain 'kinoma player'. The player is free... and plays fine. I had that on my old NR70 (didn't use it much).

But the kinoma producer sounds like something that could do converting (encoding the way they describe it) but it's $29.99. When I get to work tomorrow I'll download it though to give it a try. Maybe it's worth the $$$.

Anybody out there try kinoma producer for encoding movies for the NZ? :)

Chris,

I have used the Kimoma producer and it works good.
I've converted several types of movies with it.
Avi, quicktime and others.
The quality on the nz90 is good.

I'm happy with the results.

Alrighty then! That's one vote to the good! :) What kind of sizes do you get from the files that you encode for the NZ?

In my initial test with the Image Converter that came with the NZ cdrom didn't compress well. I took a 58Mb quicktime movie and converted it into a .mqv video that was 61Mb (before I ran out of space on my memory stick).

Does the kinoma producer do a better job doing the same type of work?

Hi,

If you want to see the size and quality of a converted movie.
This was taken off the TV and converted using Kinoma Producer.

I installed the kinoma player and tried your file. Not bad... the quality isn't that great, but then that wasn't the test right? :) The size of the file is 2.1Mb and the time is 28.9s. What kind of sizes have you gotten for a full 30minute show?

Thanks,

-chris

p.s. - now that I've seen such nice programs (like the avantgo beta for OS5) that look so nice on the NZ seeing programs like the kinoma that isn't pretty resolution-wise is just depressing. :) I'm getting spoiled!

Hi,

I just go m NZ90 a few days ago and haven't had a lot of time
to much with the video.

The Kinoma Producer was the first program that I found for video.
I'm sure there might be others out there.

The Image Converter has different quality settings. The medium one is pretty good and should give you more than enough space for your TV episode.
