i had a bit of a shock when i tried to restore a 'backup' via hotsync. not everything (incl. programs) was there.

is there a way i can backup the entire clie so that i can restore it to the same state afterwards? does the MS backup work for this?

a freeware solution would be preferred. thanks.

How about SyncAll (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=62331860-B8BF-45A1-BF6C09218430CD4D&prodID=44552)? It seems to work, although I haven't had to test it.

There are a number of apps that will backup to a MS (VFS backup) or to the desktop PC. A simple method to start with is:

1. Clear out the backup folder on your desktop (good idea to zip up the files incase of disaster).

2. Get a copy of FileZ (other file managers may work also), and set backup to on for all files. This will set the backup attibute for your apps and databases in RAM.

3. Sync your Clie. All apps and db's should be copied to your pc.

4. Zip up the new contents of the backup folder using a logical name such as Monday or 033103 (todays date). Repeat this every day to create incremental backups. This way if data or apps are missing when you restore after a crash, you can check later backup sets for the missing data.

Cleaning out the backup folder periodically will also prevent unwanted data or apps from being restored.

There are a number of helpful threads about backing up, and backup apps. Good luck.

MS Backup works great for this and the best part about it is that it comes free with the clie. I used MS Backup for a long time with great results. A month or two ago I switched to BackupMan only because BackupMan allows me to do scheduled daily backups which is something that I really needed (and MS Backup doesn't do)

One shortcoming to MSBackup is that you can't use the saved backup made on one device to load the info into another. For that I use BackUpBuddy free version.
