Hi. I am currently sold my iPAQ to get a UX50... I thought this would be a good place to learn about the UX50 before I go buy one. I have read a lot of reviews and comments out there, but I am just curious to read your opinions:
1) Pros
2) Cons
3) Does the UX50 have a bad reputation for turning into a lemon?
4) Anything else...

1) Everything...
2) Maybe the battery life.
3) N/A

Pros:
1) Keyboard. That is it. I can't think of anything else.
Cons:
1) Screen Whine.
2) Prone to "Sudden Clie Death Syndrome", even brand new and refurbished units.
3) No more warranty. No more SONY.
4) VERY POOR BATTERY LIFE!!!!!!!!
5) YES. The UX50 has a big chance to turn into a lemon. Especially now that you will only be able to buy second hand units. You don't know if it suffered a "Sudden Clie Death Syndrome". So be cautious in your purchase.
6) You have to carry an extended battery (EB40). If you can FIND and AFFORD one at this point. You can buy a cheap battery extender, but it is bigger than the UX50 itself.
So, if you ask me if I would recommend that you get a UX50 at this point in time? DEFINITELY NOT!!!!! Not unless you can find a UX50 below 200 dollars. Good luck in whatever decision you pursue, but I would not bother now for a UX50.

The pros outweight the cons, for sure. Do a search on the board and you'll see many threads on what owners like and what they don't.
Congrats and welcome. You'll enjoy it !

cktlcmd,
I guess you really got the UX-50 lemon made in China.
But mine is full of great things even it's a second hand unit.
The 14 hours of flight to asia was a joyful ride with my UX-50 w/ 4GB MS & EB40, listening endless musics and watching movies. I even captured moments with my family too.
Well, the commercial said it's priceless.... and my UX-50 did a good job.

I am just curious, what pros are you referring to aside from the keyboard?

I am glad to hear that you are one of the lucky ones. But I bought 2 UX50s and 1 UX40 at a different time frame and different stores. All brand new, but all ended up with the Sudden Clie Death Syndrome. I returned the 1st one because it occured 2 days after I bought it brand new. The second one I bought with exchange warranty, it had that problem after 6 months, but I am not worried because I have the 2 year exchange warranty, so I can get my money back as soon as there is something worth exchanging. My UX40 had the same problem a year after I bought it, again brand new and nearly unused since I have my UX50 and TH55/E1. But they all suffered the same fate: Sudden Clie Death Syndrome. Sony repaired my current UX50 by replacing the entire motherboard. But it recurred last month. So you can imagine why I call the UX series a lemon. It is absolutely lovely when it is working, but when it won't turn on for no reason, it would piss the hell out of you especially when you're doing your work. The solution is simple I know, by manually disconnecting the battery, but very tidious and I hate the fact that you will loose your current work. Another solution is to let it drain by itself for like a week, again another solution but definitely not worth the wait. I applaude SONY for a very nice design, but I hate them for selling a lemon.

Wow...
I'm really sorry to hear that you had that many units were replaced.
I storngly understand your frustration. If I were you, I would be in same situation.
(If it happened to me like that even I paid with full retail price, I would return it and I'd never buy it again. I'm glad that didn't happend to me.)

Should I be worried about getting a unit that was made in China?

The UX50 will be as useful as you make it to be. It can basically do anything you want except cellular phone capabilities. That is why I will be switching to the HTC Universal as soon as it is released. I do not care how much it costs. I used my UX50 religiously over the years and I know that the HTC will allow me to use it even more. I might keep my UX50 depending on whether or not my father will assist.

No doubt about it. IMHO the UX is the best PDA ever and I can't understand how can it be discontinued.
If mine crahses one day I'll have a hard time in substitute it..

"magnesium coating"
Have you tried drilling through the ux? If it's "coating" it sure is some tough stuff.
If the ux50 had better battery life it would be so good. I give HTC buyers at least two months befors they ebay the little submarine.
