No, I've been waiting for this exact thing. All my searches have turned up 0. I'm hoping this will be an addition to the next Clie model.

Well, it rings a bell, but not about Clies with TV tuners. One of the news articles that came out sometime last year was that Sony was going to be releasing a new OLED (organic light emitting diode) version of their screens that would consume considerably less power but be as bright and vibrant as the current Clie T665C/NX/NR/NZ series screens. The article went on to say that they would be included in the Clie line sometime in the first half of 2003 and also be used in small TV tuner devices that would use less power than earlier types. However, it didn't mean that the TV tuner would be added to the Clie line, it just meant that the same technology was going to be used in both types of electronics from Sony.

Hope that helps!

Cheers.

Yeah Out in May,

Clie Model NZ-TV42:
Price 4200.00 US dollars

Nice to the additional feature of the TV tuner, but the size is a little large with that 42 inch screen. Additional accesories include a 21" Satelite dish (a little steep at 199.00 US dollars).

What about using the PC as a broadcast medium, and streaming content to the CLIE? PCs are sufficiently powerful to adjust a stream for handheld devices. So would it be possible for a PC with a tuner card to re-encode, or re-broadcast the video feed to the handheld? Ethernet surely provides enough throughput, though I do not know about bluetooth.

Further, the content stream could be wrapped by a robust software package on both ends. The handheld could have controls (such as volume, channel, etc.) that are sent back to the PC and used to control the feed.

Granted, it would be a short range solution, but I would love to wander down to the kitchen for a snack without missing anything. Possible? Likely? Available now?

I haven't heard anything, but last night I had a dream (I know I am pathetic to dream about this) that Sony was releasing a TV tuner for Clies in the format of a CF card and that they planned on putting CF slots in all of the Clies to be released this year, because they stop caring about form factor.

Ever consider buying a Tivo? Pause live TV when you leave the room, never miss a thing! I love my Tivo! Well, I love my Clie too!:p

I don't recall what company is working on small tv tuners, but they do exist and are smaller than SD cards. I might have see it on www.eetimes.com . I also remember taking a sony survey and one of the questions had TV tuner as an option for a new PDA feature.

I'm just trying to figure out the ultimate form factor for this thing. Are we talking about small antennae or large ones, cable taps, etc? If done the right way (i.e., an iPAQ wifi antenna) it would be bearable. Done the wrong way, we're looking at handhelds that will make the NZ look like a work of art.

Hmmm, would be nice if I could use my Clie as a second monitor for my PC! I could have the TV program display to it and not clutter up my main panel.

More info up on Clie Planet now. Seems like the tuners are likely to be included in CLIEs within the next few months.

If you want a portable device with TV addon available:
Look for the SEGA GAME GEAR
I admit it's a little old, but I think it's basically the thing you want... and maybe it gives SONY a basic idea of how to build this thing, since SEGA and Sony have become partners in the meantime
