Does anyone know of an alternative that might perform a similar function, since JackSprat for OS5 Clies is a no-go?

why would it be any easier for another company to make an app work for OS5 (NX,NZ,TG) than for Brayder to make Jacksprat work? It isn't. Brayder is having conflicts trying to make this app work on these clies and it is likely that any other company that tries to make an app like this will run into the same problems.

I'm not stupid, but thanks. I just thought someone at another company might have found a way around the obstacles where Brayder failed. This is why multiple software companies exist in the first place, and why competing products don't have identical feature lists. BTW< I heard today that Brayder will be releasing Sprat for NZ90 shortly. I wonder why no problem there...

Hm, the nz, but not the nx. Interested to know the difference. Can someone explain! I heard it wouldn't work for either. Thanks.

I am thinking of buying the TG or the next Sony coming out in 2 or 3 weeks (the true T665 replacement), so I wanted to see if I could use JackSprat and JackFlash on those. I really like this and with the 16 Megs of ROM, this would be helpful. Any thoughts or ideas or news from Brayder? Thanks.

This is what is on Brayder's site.
JackSprat will NOT be supported on SONY OS5 devices. If you are looking for the 3.0beta for an OS5 Clie device, please purchase JackFlash by itself.
If Brayder can do the NZ, they can do the NX, but they have said no to both for now.
I am not stupid either :)!

No JackSprat is a bummer. :(

NZ got 3.37mb left only.

Hey, that is more than it would have otherwise, but the no JackSprat is definitely a bummer. Is this something that Brayder cannot do or is it something that Sony does not want them to do? Maybe, they will be able to this later on whenever Sony relaxes a bit? I am just curious if anyone knows.
Thanks,
Robert

Here is the response I received from Brad at Brayder when I asked if they were making any progress towards getting the info they needed from SONY to allow JackSprat to work with the NX:
"At this point, we have not made any progress on this front.
We do not expect to be able to. Sony has removed some
key support structures which need to be able to dependably
restore a device. Without this, we cannot release JackSprat."
Doesn't look too good right now.

I'm guessing it's something that Sony has built in. I'd also bet that Brayder has done everything possible to get around whatever protection Sony built in. I'm happy with 4 meg of free ROM that I wouldn't have otherwise had. True, I'd love to delete some built in Sony crap, but oh well.

Do you think if we make a big enough stink, Sony will open up a bit? I can tell you that this monolopy attitude to the PDA's is getting annoying and making we want to check out Palm and Garmin again.

What about NZ if nx had being removed some
key support structures from Sony?
Why can't Brayder replace whatever Sony had remove it?

YTTAN,
I didn't quite understand what you said. Could you say that again? I think it may be a great thought, but I just want to make sure. Thank you...

What i mean is that since Sony remove the so called key support structures from NX, why can't brayder create or replace the missing parts?

I see. Basically, since Sony won't support it, then they should be able to do what they need to get JackSprat to work. I am not a programmer, but why not? I can see your point.
By the way, one of my company's warehouses is in Singapore. I almost traveled there a month ago, but my manager went instead. I hope you are healthy and safe there.

I'm guessing a bit here, but messing with core OS functionality that the OS load itself depends upon can be devastating. One conflict and you now own an expensive paperweight. According to Brayder's reply, whatever Sony changed would affect your ability to recover your original ROM image. Very high risk, and I don't fault Brayder for not wanting to deal with it.
I'm not sure why "only" 4 MB of free Flash is a problem. Even with JackSprat, I only recovered 1 MB on my T665C. I'd be real happy with 4 MB.

Tanker Bob -
Well - given that Sony is putting more and more in the Flash of their devices, there should be more and more that can be removed...
I myself will never use the remote control (my IR is on the side of the device...so it's rather pointless (no pun intended). That would free up (given what the file size is on the NR70 when it's added to RAM) another 1.2mb of space...
The new TG series has Picsel viewer in ROM - which would be another 1~2mb of RAM...I don't use the new clie launcher...I don't use several other things...
It would really be something to have 4-6mb of addtional Flash...:)
Alas - we might not see it...I'm enjoying JackFlash...JackSprat would just make the device a bit more useable...:)

Do you think that Brayder will have JackFlash and JackSprat for the Palm handhelds and the new Garmin handheld? The Garmin has 32 Meg's of Flashable ROM. Now that would be useful even if it already has 32 Meg's of RAM. If they can work on those, then Sony had better get busy and put in some more RAM if I am going to remain a customer. I hope someone from Sony reads this and keeps this in mind... if they care about customer loyalty.
