Can anyone recommend a good set of replacement earphones fort he ones that shipped with my NX70? I bought a pair of koss earphones the other day and they dont play as loud as the orginial. Thought it might be becasue they are $4 earphones. Has anyone else replaced their OEM earphones and if so did it improve the soudn quality?

Thanks

i have the sony ones that go around the back of your head they sound good

I have plugged it to my Hi-Fi-Amp and the sound quality is acceptable, but the "line out" of the headphone jack isn't as loud as it should. I have to pull up the volume far higher as I need with my portable MD. So I think this is no issue of the earphone but of the output itself..

I bought some replacement earphones that I absolutely love. They are made by Sony and fit inside my ear but much more comfortable than "earbud style" earphones. Sound quality on them is incredible. I forget what they are called but gimme a couple minutes and i will have a link. very highly recommended.

they feel like pratically nothing. they may look a little big but the actual solid parts are extremely small are mostly very soft rubber. they hardly feel like there is anything in my ears. I find regular "earbud style" earphones extremely unconfortable in my eyes but these feel great. not to mention how great they sound.

Fontopias for great sound; excellent frequency response, tight bass.

http://i-shopping4u.com/sony_mdr_ex70sl_black.html

B&O A8's- aesthetics that compliment the NX, crystal clear highs, bass not as good as Fontopias. Expensive.

Great thread. This is what makes these boards so valulable.
I find there are situations were the NX70V just doesn't put
out enough power such as on an airplane.

These earphones were just what I was looking for.

I just ordered mine from B&H Photo for $39.90 including shipping.

iebnn,

I've looked at the Bose and know someone who has them. They really are great but of course they are expensive and large.

The NX70 earphones are fine most of the time and I like the size but just a little more volume would be appreciated. I've seen that complaint all over these boards.

From all the comments on this thread and the reviews on the web these Sony's sound great.

I got my EX71SL's today :D. I'm very pleased with them. I would recommend them (though the sheath is not bonded to the core on the leads, not the extension but this just makes it more supple). The vol is slightly louder on them that reg ones.

As for volume, they dont even go near failing at the clies top range and its above listenable for me at full volume. Make sure u dont have avls though as well as making sure your mp3s arent quieter (like one of mine is)

I have a set of Sony in the ear fontopidi-thingy-bobs...... they are great and give good qualilty sound that is load enough (as loud as the originals anyway!!).....

Word of warning..... the bigger the headphones = the more power they will consume = the faster your battery will drain...... keep the headphones compact and the volume low as often as possible....

Well, thanks to this board, I'm officially shopping for the Fontopias now that I too have lost the OEM headphones. I'm curious though, nobody's mentioned that the OEM headphones have two prongs. One is the standard 3.5 mm jack, the other a rectangular prong -- is it solely to accommodate the remote control on the OEM headphones?

Yes the rectangular piece is for the remote control wand. Which brings up another question entirely. Has anyone come across a place to purchase a replacement for the remote control wand?

Exactly where I was going! Seems odd, but I've been scouring Sony's site for the remote and if the remote is on there, I can't find it. So I did a Google and came up with what appears to be a very cool remote, but I can't figure out if it's compatible with the NX70. Anybody know?

You can put any standard headphone jack into the unit without a problem.

For all the people who are having volume concerns...I'm sure this is not the problem...but have you switched off AVLS?

As a note, my NX remote wont fit into my discman (4 thinnner connectors as opposed to 2 fatter ones on the NX). Maybe if minidics had the same connector it might work. If you bought one and it didnt work you could always return it anyway

If you want a replacement wand you will probably need to call sony. Now if the wand is anything like the ones that come with sont CD players it should be pretty pricey. But since it has no LCD on it it might no be too much. But it is Sony. I asked them how much the replacement for my controller for my discman would be and the told me $99!!! I was like "For that peice of plastic?!". Anyway I always keep track of where that kind of stuff is so I don't have to pay out the nose to get a new one is I lose it or break it. -MD

I use Sony's Nude EX earbuds. You'll have to do a search for them, as they're a bit hard to find. They use neodymium magnets which deliver ungodly beautiful sound, they look like little silver marbles in your ears, they come with three different sized sets of interchangeable rubber plugs (very comfortable), they have a little plastic cover that I use to wear them like a necklace, they have the Sony name in silver on the connector between them (goes well with the Clie), and best of all - you can get them with a short cord and extender (in case you want to use the remote and aren't fond of strangulation).

The Nudes EX is just another name for the EX70/EX71's. Judging by the chome connector and the extension i think you have the MDR-EX71SL's (the actual model number).

I highly recommend them, great sound plus they are really comfortable

I myself use the earphones from Bang & Olufsen, they're very nice & stylish but too costly I must admit.

I shall use my headphones as an example of satisfaction.

Linked for size. (http://www.crappyhosting.com/homie_s/images/headphones.jpg)

(I get bonus points for using my NX and having the ClieSource forums opened up on the PC)

Those are my Sony MDR-V700 monitoring headphones. These are great, reliable headphones. Haven't had a problem with them yet, and the sound great. Since I'm a musician and use them to monitor as well as use them for composing music on the PC, they work very well in all aspects. I bought them online for $100 USD online, even though I believe they retail for $150. There's more about them at SonyStyle I bet.

Let me tell you, I've had all those other headphones that are cheaper, and they've ALL broken on me or malfunction in some way. I can definitely tell you that these are WELL worth the money. If you want a pair that are durable and put out great sound, I highly recommend them.

Of course, if you're after sheer quality, you really can't get any better for the price than a pair of Grado SR60s (around £85).

They may be no match for Sony in the style stakes, but when it comes to delivering music, they're the best I've ever heard.

They've rightly won endless audiophile mag awards, and I can't recommend them enough...

For those of you looking for a replacement for your remote, I know this isn't really what you're looking for, but I have both of these and they work really well plus you can use any headphone with them:

Sennheiser HZR62 (http://www.sennheiserusa.com/pages/products/headphones/hzr6.htm)

Koss VC - 20 (http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/02ProductDetailCall?ReadForm&Accessories^VC20)

The Koss has a 1 meter cord and the Sennheiser has a 6 meter cord. However, when I received the Sennheiser, I sent it to their service department to have the cord shortened to ~.6 meters. I received it a couple of days later and the cord was indeed shortened to the length I had asked for and the cord was in perfect condition as if it had come out of the factory in that length. What I like about the Sennheiser is that it has volume control for both the left and right channels. Also, the Sennheiser has a cleaner sound even after the modification by their service department. Both do have regular sized headphone plugs so they will work with any device that has a regular headphone port. The Sennheiser has a straight plug and the Koss has an angled plug ~ 30 degrees. Also, if you try searching for the Sennheiser some sites will show the older model (HZR6) instead of the HZR62. The difference is that the HZR6 has black volume sliders and a mono/stereo switch. The HZR62 has white volume sliders and no mono/stereo switch. I recommend these to anyone looking for a replacement remote. I know they don't have all the functions of the original remote, but it's a cheaper alternative.

Well I answered my own question. I went to Circuit City today and saw that they had the Koss Plugs mispriced for $7.99. $20 is a bit much for a test but $8 was well worth it. I did a quick comparision between the Plugs and MDR-G73s. Though I liked the sound and volume of the Plugs I felt they just weren't up to the quality of the G73s. The G73 offers a very impressive level of clarity and now that I've figured out how to wear them (yes they are that complicated) I am definitely keeping them and giving away the Plugs.

I have had the ex70's for years and I just love them. My friends and family also use their own pairs of ex70's since I always recommend them when someone asks about earbuds. Minidisc people have argued about the fidelity of certain earbuds, the sony 888's and the ex70's being the most popular (it seems). However, many people have said that the 888's hurt and the ex70's are much more comfortable.
Sony also has a less expensive ex51 which, as far as I can tell, have pretty much the same specs. I saw them in Japan and on audiocubes.com, a japanese audio component importer. A friend bought the ex51s and was pretty happy with it. I didn't compare the sound quality but they had the same cushy rubber buds. I think they're about $35.
Also, there's a similar in-the-ear aiwa HP-VX100 model for $17.00-$25 for those of you who want comfort and a low price. I don't know how it sounds, but the price seems good.

I have a pair of Sony earbuds very similar to the NX70v's, but these have volume control and come with foam covers so they don't hurt your ears. I got them for $15 at K-Mart, and I must say, they're the best headphones I've ever had.

Someone has to set you folks straight, and being my first post here, I figure it should be me!

The Sony EX70's (and sucessors) are solid headphones, but they are a bit bright and offer some bass lacking in definition.

Of all the phones mentioned here, the Grado SR60's are easily the best. They are wonderful phones if you can handle the open-air design (not for use in noisy environments or places where you dont want people to hear your music).

Basically, the other phones mentioned here should be avoided, as you can do much better for the money with some research:

Did you know that there are crazy people who spend thousands of dollars on headphone systems that rival the most expensive audiophile speaker systems? I was previously one of these wackos (its almost a disease, and really hurts the wallet so I had to leave!). You can find out more about some really nice headphones at Head-Fi, http://www.head-fi.org. This is THE place to go for headphone information and reviews on the internet.

Enjoy!

Koss The Plug ear buds. 10 bucks, cool purple color, lifetime warranty, better response numbers than the other bud types.

I dispatch service calls all day-I can wear these UNDER the single ear headset I use for answering phones. Good enough sound quality turn up the volume, quiet enough to still hear at low levels while still answering phones, comfortable enough to wear the earbud under the cupped-style ear cushion of the phone headset.

I can do all this and still hear the phone over the music, and still participate in conversations around me.

I've used several types of headphones for listening to walkmans (walkmen?), disc players, and PDAs. Headphones fall into two main categories open and closed phones. Closed cans give you isolation from what's around you -- great if you listen on buses, trains, or planes. I take a commuter bus to work so I use closed cans more often than open. Open cans work best and in most cases sound better than closed phones. if you listen in quiet environments such as in the office, in the library, at home (assuming you don't have kids).

First off, a couple of general comments: Most earbud type earphones aren't that in sound quality. There's some physics behind that statement which I won't go into here (it has to do with sound waves and phase cancellation). But there are lots of choices that will sound better than the phones that Sony included with the Clie. After all they were free and one gets what one pays for, right?

For closed models I would recommend (in order of price):

1) Koss "The Plug"
2) Sony MDR-EX70's (or whatever is current). Somewhat tizzy in the treble, and not as good bass as the Koss, but cleaner midrange and for my ears a more comfortable fit.
3) Sony MDR-V4 Not in production anymore but they do fold up into a pretty small package.
3) Etymotic ER-6 These are comparable in sound quality to the Sonys but somewhat more expensive.
4) Sony MDR-7606 More a classic "around the ear" closed phone. Pretty good isolation and very good sound quality. Used in studios for monitoring.
4) Etymotic ER-4P Quite expensive, but the best sound quality of the bunch. Etymotic is a manufacturer of hearing aids and hearing testing equipment. They also make some darn goood heardphones.

For open models, there are a bunch of choices.
The Grado SR60 are one of my favorites on the lower end and are set up to work well with low output portable devices. The Koss Porta-pro work nicely too, fold up into a small package, but the Grados sound better. There are other closed phones (the higher end Grados and Sennheisers come to mind) out there but you would need an external amp to step up the output to make them sound the best.

One place to go for some really good headphones for all purposes is: http://headroom.headphone.com. They have honest reviews of many different headphones. They also sell headphone amps.

Another site for headphone reviews and discussion is http://www.headwize.com

I bought them at Good Guys. They are pricey at $149, but well worth it. The sound is amazing. Take a listen and everything else will sound like a tin can. I took by Clie in the store and tested prior to purchasing.

It comes with a cloth case, headphone extension cord, mini to large pin adaptor, and the headphones have a long cord. They are lightweight so not much of a hassle to carry around.

OK, as a sound engineer (fader jockey) . I have fitted many musicians and singers with in-ear monitors. And for the price nobody makes better in-ears than Shure Bros. You will hear the if you mp3 are ripped bad. The dual drivers in the E5 model gives you more than full range that the professials demand with great isolation.

THey not cheap, but good true sound is never cheap. So use what the pros use.

Tommy, those Shures look great but cost $50.00 more than I paid for my NX-70V !!

I have used Shure mics and headsets professionally for years but your bang-for-the-buck meter needs calibration buddy :)

Have any of you guys ever been to MiniDisco?

http://www.minidisco.org

They sell Minidisc players and accessories. The reason I mention the site is because they sell quite a few headphones with short cords, which is great for audio players with inline remotes.

I was at Target this morning and at least the one in Attleboro MA has the MDR-73's for under $15. They are a great set of headphones that they look to have been moved to clearance. Very happy with my set.

I like the sound and it is really comfortable to wear them even for a long time and they reduce noise from the enviroment.

I use them for myself and my wife uses them on her Clie aswell.

Nope! I got 1 EX 70 with me. It won't even close to my $20 Sennheiser earphones.

Sennheiser is the best on it bass presentation and clarity of sound. Besides, it is cheap!!

Or you can check out the MDR-EX71LP or MDR-EX51LP. They're both 2003 models that are replacing the MDR-EX70

As a music nut with multiple sets of high-quality headphones, I can offer the following advice:

By far the best portable headphones you can buy are the Etymotic ER-4S. At around $270, they are not exactly cheap for portable phones, but once you listen to music through them, you will never go back to anything else, except perhaps full-size Grados. With their 23db of isolation, they seal out external noise better than anything else on the market, so they happen to also be great for those of us who listen in noisy environments. There is also an ER-4P, which is a bass-enhanced, low impedance model perfect if you're just going to be listening through portables. It's also a little bit less microphonic than the ER-4S. (There is also a lower cost version called the ER-6, but these are not as easy to drive, and benefit more from using a good headphone amp.)

At a much much lower price point, for less than $20.00 you can buy Sennheiser MX500s. These are a steal at this price, and easily rival headphones costing 5X as much. The MX400s are even cheaper, and offer the same great sound quality without an inline volume control.

If you try any of the 'phones I mentioned here, I doubt you would ever think about putting on a pair of Sony cans again.

Hope this helps a little.

Just wanted to add ome more comment-

I was looking back at some of the other posts on this thread, and people have mentioned Grados, specifically the SR-60. While this is a great set of cans for its price, I think the better value lies one model up, with the SR-80. To my ears, they offer a more balanced sound with a richer low-end than the SR-60s, and they can still be driven quite nicely without a headphone amp for those who do not own/want to own one.

In either case, Grado clarity and detail is fantastic, and both will blow away Sony's supplied 'phones.

Once again, just my two cents. (I should mention that I do own/have owned the headphones I am talking about, and my comments are based on my personal experiences. Your wants may be different, and YMMV.)

Sony's h.ear stereo phones have a wrap behind your ear clip. They are comfortable on the way to work and won't fall off.

here's the USA link, it is rather long:

My favorites for my NX60 are Shure EC2's. $99 retail, but search for them on the web, can be found for $70-80. Great noise isolation, outstanding sound. A musician friend of mine recommended them, and they are awesome. Check 'em out at: www.shure.com
