Well, thats good news. Palm OS hardware was getting kinda stagnant here for a while.. On the other hand, I am betting it was a phone manufacturer :/ I for one would love to see sony back in the game, or perhaps an HP Palm OS device :D Im not one for this cellphone-PDA convergence deal though, I personally don't have, and refuse to get, a cell phone.

1 Alcatel

2 Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.

3 Motorola, Inc.

4 Nokia Corporation

5 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

6 Siemens AG

7 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB
Its probably one of those, since those are the top seven handset providers, and it says in the article the new liscensee is one of the top 5.

Wouldn't it be interesting to have #7 sign up? :D

Yes it would. The great comeback. I can just imagine all the PalmOne engineers shaking in their offices, and the department of innovation employees will probably lose their jobs.

I guess we can cross them off the list.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if it did. I think Sony might have dropped out to let Sony Ericsson take over their market share. I would pick up a Sony device any day. :)

Also, seeing as they are two seperate companies, this wouldn't hurt Sony's image.

My hunch is #3 or #5. #7 just got a new CEO last week and he has a lot of prioritizing to do.

We have to look and see which of those are already Palm OS liscensees.

Samsung is not eligible, as they are already a Palm liscensee. I believe the rest of them are open to getting liscenses.

Lets look at it from another point of view:
Siemens just sold its hardware department to an asian compan y and they also make PocketPC's...
Nokia OWNS Symbian-they wont kill their own OS IMHO
Samsung-don't they already make PalmOS smartphones?
Well, but I am not too sure ikf it isnt gonna be Motorola. They have had touchscreen devices for a long time(gotta post that a920 review), and PalmOs would definitely fit into their concept!

Would you mind the phone had the size of a Clie NX series?
Personally I won't mind, for the large screen obviously.

In Soviet Russia, Palm OS runs you, etc. ;)

Remember the Motorola MPx. The Dual Hindge Windows-powered smartphone. It was cancelled. It looked like it was gonna make a lot of money too. Imagine if Motorola were to be the next licensee. They make great-looking phones, although I've never really owned one. My whole family has a Motorola phone except me.

My guess is Sony-Ericsson. I remember that sometime last year when Palmsource CEO (?) says that a new deal with SE is imminent... but has to backtrack immediately when SE vehemently denied it. While the P910 is a solid hit, there has been no talk of a successor... And a switch to Palm for the P910 successor would create some excitement once again....with what Sony has learned, it wouldn't be like starting from scratch. SE will just has to compensate or integrate Sony for it.

Otherwise, Motorola is the next candidate. With a Windows Mobile RAZR in the works, then a Palm OS version is pretty easy to port over.

I'd also really wish it to be Sony-Ericsson, just think of a phone as cool as a clie...(day dreaming...)

But how about this?
Motorola has been doing Linux phone for a long time, but their user interface was never refined. So maybe they're intrested in "palm on linux"?

A big possibility, but a sad one, because that means we won't see the new product in the next 2 years, since palm on linux isn't even done yet.

My only concern would be that a SE palmos device would be only a smartphone. I like ahving two seperate devices if only for the battery life. I'm biting MY nails...

It isn't SE. It is LG.

Hmm. Well, I guess any licensee is better then none. They make a lot of phones so atleast we'll see some options to the Treo soon.
