I have had various Sony PDAs. I am going to buy a new PDA for my wife. Now that a Palm Tungsten T can be purchased for close to the same price as a SJ33 I am seriously considering moving out of the family. The primary reason would be the media storage cards and Palm V operating system. . The cards for the palm are greater and and greater capacity. My wife wants a mp3 player and the card capacity can be an issue. Sony is coming out with larger cards but they are more expensive.

Any thoughts?

Get whatever suits you. Personally, I think if you stay with the palm operating system you will be happy, as opposed to going to a pocket pc. The tungsten T looks nice, but I think the SJ33 has a much better battery life if that is a concern.

I have had a number of Palm products as well as a Handera 330. I now have a Sony SJ20 and a SJ30. I can say that without a doubt the Sonys are the best quality products I have owned in the Palm OS family. I don't plan to change.

How does your wife use her PDA? For entertainment purposes or business or both?

If she's the type of person who likes to listen to music then I suggest you give her the SJ33... Otherwise, if she is a workaholic or likes to surf on the net and have a bluetooth compatible phone, then I suggest the Tungsten T.

Also, there's another factor that comes into consideration. Have you purchased Sony products that require memory sticks? If so, chances are you have memory sticks, you can use those with the SJ33. The Tungsten uses a different type of expansion -- Secure Digital (SD) cards which is widely used in cameras as well.

Both the Tungsten and SJ33 are great handhelds. However, the Tungsten is intended to aim towards business professionals while the SJ33 is intended for people who uses his/her PDA mostly for entertainment purposes.

The only reason to get the tungsten T in your case would be the blue tooth. otherwise aim your sites on the SJ33

The Tungsten T may be marketed as being business-oriented, but on the hardware side I would say that it's quite a bit more capable than the SJ33. Besides the (significantly) faster processor and OS5, most of the big programs like AcidImage (hardware JPEG decompression!) and Kinoma Player have long since added support for the Tungsten. An MP3 player exists now and, though it isn't free, $9 for AeroPlayer really isn't that big of a deal. If you don't want to pay for that, the first (beta) versions of the free RealOne player for OS5 have begun floating around. While memory sticks currently only go up to 128 MB (the largest that the SJ33 will be able to use), secure digital cards go up to at least 512 MB, maybe higher. Built-in bluetooth! No jog dial, but it does have a 5-way directional pad in the center. The tungsten is also lighter and has a smaller form factor than the SJ33 (when it's closed). The only thing the SJ33 has on the tungsten is the battery life, though the figure of 14 days vs 7 is somewhat exaggerated since the Tungsten is being tested with the backlight at 40%, while the SJ33's backlight is OFF. Also consider that the Tungsten's processor is running more than twice as fast as the SJ33. Finally, the tungsten has a built-in mic and comes with a cradle.

If you can really find the Tungsten for less than $300, I would jump on it!

One bad about TT though...not as much dynamic memory so you can't use ScummVM with it. :(

I've read some detailed discussion threads on Palminfocenter regarding the TT's audio quality. From what I can see, the audio quality of the TT is simply not as good as the CLIE's. It will do if MP3 playing is a minor feature for you, but if your wife really wants MP3's, the CLIE may be a better bet.

At the very least, try to listen to both units with your own ears and decide.

I had the same question... TT or SJ33. I even bought them both and took them home to compare.

I really wanted to like the TT - and I did. The slider on the one I had was great. Metal body, 5-way nav pad better than jog dial (my opinion), very good screen, OS5 (small fonts on day view in datebk5 and high res AvantGo!).

BUT, I chose the SJ-33. The audio on the tungsten was absolutely awful through the headphones. I am no audiophile, but the quality was simply unacceptable. Matter of fact, I tried a couple of pairs of headphones and not all would fit all the way into the TT jack - but they all fit fine in the Sony. What this says to me is that the TT was really not designed with mp3 in mind. Sure it can do it, but it's an obvious afterthought. Other than that - the TT is a great machine.

Funny thing is the TT mp3 sounded better through the built-in speaker than the Sony did! Unfortunately, headphones are how I will be using the mp3. No contest there.

For me, audio was important. The audio on the Sony is very good. If it's not important for you, then the TT may be the one for you.

I also really like the battery life of the SJ33.

The screens each have their own drawbacks. I like the whiter TT (Sony has blue-ish tint), but I prefer transflective.

I wanted SD expansion - but am stuck with mem stick. Not life or death here, but I would rather have SD.

Personally, bluetooth is meaningless for me. I know some people love it, but I have no need for it whatsoever. So that was a non-factor. Recording voice memos is important for some, but I do not like talking to my pda.

Overall, they are both great devices. As everyone says - check them both out and decide which features are most important to you.

Good luck!

It's a hard choice to make, but choose wisely. Like mentioned each device has it's own set of drawbacks. The three different T|T's I tried each had problems with dust under the screen to varying degrees. Sony's transflective LCDs are some of the best in the market.
