Well im not picking it up until Wednesday, but wanted to ask a quesiton in advance.

This is a bit of a loose cannon purchase - i was looking for something _extremely_ portable to do some basic wifi surfing/email and msn chat while away from my PC in the house... or in a cafe etc... actual 'pda/organisational' duties are a secondary thing i guess. a decent thumbboard was key so i could type a bit without killing my hands ;)

Just looking at the battery test thread earlier... what sort of time should i expect to be able to be connected to a wireless hotspot before the battery runs out ? i heard someone say 1 hour on a good battery... but read some reviews that suggest 2.5 hours ?

Whats a realistic estimate ? Should i start looking at getting an EB40 as well ? If so, where can i buy one around the UK ? (They seem very hard to come buy)

Thx :)

If you are using wifi extensibly, I think it will be good idea to have EB40. However there are some other solutions for external battery around $40 if you are careless about UX50 fashion.

wife, bluetooth are battery killer.

First off, welcome to the 1src Community. :)

As for battery life on the UX. I think that I've been able to use WiFi on my device for less than 30 min. I've coped with this by getting a battery extender. If you look at my sig, I have a Semon's Battery Extender. Click on that. You don't have to get the same one but one similar to that. These battery extenders are way cheaper than the EB40 and they actually keep your internal battery charged. For all the info on the battery extender and what you need, you should look at this thread.

If you want to get an EB40, go to Ebay right now and search for some being shipped to UK. They are rare and expensive. Good luck.

.. cool! so does the battery extender plug into the UX50's USB port or the power supply of the cradle ?

It plugs into a Leather case that has a built-in USB cradle for the UX. Look here.

This is something like what I have. I have a Brando one, which is the same but different company.

Now, the extender is just a case that requires batteries. You should look through the thread I suggested to make sure you get everything you need. The Extender just holds and uses the batteries. It DOES NOT come with batteries.

Yep looked at that thread... and as far as i have gathered i require the cradle kit, extender, and 4 2500mAh rechargable AAs right ?

I have ordered everything except the batteries... and i have a recharger already. I'll pick up the batteries somewhere locally.

Battery life is the weekest point of UX50, but after I moded the cradle,
I can use 4.5hrs+ wifi with full backlight or hookup bluetooth GPS whole day !

I managed to get through amoon's cradle mod (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85697&highlight=usb+cradle+mod) without any serious foul-ups and also build my own battery extender (details to follow) but I am very impressed with Hippo's mod.

Has anyone else tried it? Can they provide a step by step for me? the replacement UX50 batteries are really, really cheap on eBay at the mo...

I just bought 4xAnsmann 2600mAh 1.25V AA batteries to go with the extender.

Hopefully that will be enough juice to run this thing for decent amounts of time ;)
