View Full Version : making a slow t5 faster

Hello, I am a new member here. I got a T5 3 weeks ago and I use it for medical applications (5minute clinical consult, clinicalmed, harrison's, emMed etc.). I found these programs to be slow, especially when typing in words within these programs (each letter that I typed in would have about a 1 second delay). Yesterday, I used my wifi card for the internet for just the 2nd time, and after I finished using wi-fi, all my programs were suddenly really fast! IE there was no delay time when I typed in a key.

What have I done? I showed other people (who have 'slow' programs on their T5) and they want to make theirs faster as well. But I don't know what I did to make it faster??
I did not download any file at all, atleast, not explicitly. I have not downloaded the T5 update because that 'memo trick' states the date as 10/16/2004 IE I still need to update.

Any help would be much appreciated, and I apologise if this is a really stupid question with a really easy answer.

Thanks,
bimetal.

Did you download the ROM update for the T5, alot of people say it makes their T5s run faster.

Hi jjesusfreak1. I have not downloaded the update yet, and I have amended my initial post to recognise this, thanks.

But I still don't know what has made my pda faster, and would like to know so I can share it with other people.

bimetal,
if you find out how to address the slow speed, please let me know. i am having the same problems and it is getting annoying with the pda running so slow with those progs.

email me at iak394@yahoo.com

thanks

Do you all have the new 1.1 update installed?

Faster or not, you might want to update soon...most people swear by the speed increase. I have a T5 but I bought it after the update (and installed the update immediately) but the unit is zippy and no delay whatsoever (compared to previous Palms) with large apps (multimedia, Tome Raider, etc. but not medical apps - I am not a medical practitioner).

If you are proficient in G1, you might want to installed the hacked G1 files too...G1 seems to be more responsive to strokes input.

Other than
1. PalmOne installing something stealthy while you are online, or
2. The wifi card installing or tweaking some settings, or
3. something overclocked your unit.

I can't see any speed increase from just browsing with wifi...

Or maybe your most frequently used app just got cached in the RAM, so it will be speedier until it get flushed out or you resetted your unit. Remember the T5 uses the same Caching technology that slows down the Lifedrive, it's just RAM is faster than Hard Disc, so the slowdown is not too discernible...

Thanks for the feedback people, espec GadgetGuru.
I have since read on other med-related websites that because of the type of memory that the T5 has, it has a significantly greater time lag with skyscape programs as compared to the T3.
I am still uncertain what has caused my PDA to run faster. I am not going to install the T5 update yet because it may revert my T5 back to the 'slow' mode that all other T5 users I know have.

On a side note, I installed this freeware program called 'benchmark' which is supposed to tell u how fast ur own PDA is working
(it can be found at = http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/XJ&sdn=palmtops&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.quartus.net%2Fproducts%2Fbenchmark%2F)

Anyway, if anyone is intererested it says my T5 is running at 686%.

bimetal,

Thanks for the tip on Benchmark. FYI, I tried it on my T5, which has the update installed. It is running at the same rate as yours - 686%. Now, I have run the WiFi card and browsed, so perhaps I'm in the same state as you. However, you should have no fear about upgrading.

The update made a big difference in the speed of my T5. It also gave me a lot more memory.
