View Full Version : Will AvantGO beta run on NR70v?

Saw recently that the new AG beta supports the VG area of the Clie series. But, will the beta run on OS 4.1 units, or only those with something 5.0 or later?

I tried installing the beta a few months ago, and seem to remember it refused to sync, and that's why I am back on the release version.

Anyone have any experience?

It does work on NR70 devices, with the fallowing restrictions:

1. Hi-Res+ support, but NO status bar at the buttom of the screen.
2. All fonts and images are in low-res, which make it a bit difficult to read. Hi-res assist & ThinFont won't help. Didn't tried any other 3ed party Hi-Res suppport, 'cause they screwing up my Hebrew support.
3. A bit slower then older 4.x version.

This irritates me, as I've been a loyal user for years now and just cuz I'm not ready to upgrade to an OS 5 device, I am stuck with this old version. I'm sure trere are more users of 4.0 than OS 5...... :o(

Where does one find the latest beta (5.2)?

It irritates me, too!

That's why I dumped Avantgo and started using iSilo. Yes, it costs $17, and it is a little more complicated to get set up. But once you figure it out, it actually is an excellent, flexible piece of software. Many of the same channels I used at Avantgo I now have on iSilo.

And it supports hi-res+ beautifully on the NR70V. Some users prefer Handstory or Plucker, but it might be time for you to check out some alternatives.

At least the beta WORKS on OS5. The old one didn't. It's taken ages to get it this far...as far as the OS4.x version...if it ain't broke, why fix it?

The only reason I've not dumped AG is its ability to sync via modem. None of the others offer that for all channels.

Just found a thread in the N section -- apparently there are a couple people running the beta on a 760, so it sounds like it might work on an NR. Worth a shot, maybe. Just back up first. ;)

Or you could switch to http://www.plkr.org which is much better than all of them...

Just my 2 cents...

Just my 2 cents... Does plucker have the ability to sync via modem? I haven't messed with it in a while...

Plucker itslef does not sync. You sync (install) pdb files that plucker generates and then plucker in the palm reads those pdbs.

The problem with that is that you need to manually update them daily if you're viewing news pages and such...where I always found AvantGo useful was in getting my daily news, sports and weather via hotsync without having to take the time to run other operations.

You could always run scheduled tasks (under windows) or a cron job (under UNIX) to do it for you. Both are pretty simple to setup I use a scheudle task for my showtimes data every morning. I've always used AV but I think I might check out plucker.

Plucker is a great reader. I actually have all of the www.tldp.org howtos and guides on my Clie using Plucker as the reader... not to mention the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Works just as well for websites, but you will have to run a seperate process to update websites. Not really a biggie once you realize just how good plucker is.
