Anyone find any software that monitors the signal strength, or will report the other 802.11b devices found?

Not really the same thing but LANSTATUS from Handera (www.handera.com) shows what you're linked to, when you manage to link. I git it from a Yahoo forum that I can't remember the details of ... maybe someone else can help or u can post this question in the wireless section (forum).

The wireless LAN itself acts as a 'sort of' monitor as it will only light up if you can connect to a network (any network).

Sorry can;t be more helpful.

Yah not quite the same as Netstumbler. This app tells you about a current connection. So you have to be able to connect first to get any info. To connect to open broadcasting APs

Set your clie to.
No WEP
Blank or "any" for SSID
IP and DNS set to auto
powersave mode disabled

The WL100 card will work on a Laptop but won't work with Netstumbler. No raw monitor mode. Honestly I don't think any intel based cards work with netstumbler.

Actually I noticed the light is on when the NIC is trying to access something it doesn't necessarily means that it found a signal and connected.

(therefore the LINK light can be on even when there is no signal to pick up on)

I can be sitting anywhere on the planet when I tell the clie to connect using the profile for that AP it will say connected and light will flash. LanStatus will just give me the IP and gateway that I've specified in my profile and I'm not connected to an ap at all. The mac address it shows isn't the mac of my ap or my wifi. A true stumbler should put the card in receive/monitor mode and you be able to hear any ssid broadcast. From what I understand if netstumbler it doesn't make any access request. Many people even run it without TCP/IP even installed which I've also tried.
