Good Podcast. I'm going to have to check out the other Palm related podcasts as well. Wasn't even aware of a couple of them.

Ha, I was not aware of some of the websites doing the podcasts.

I think it's better to have a unified version than multiple versions... If 5.4.8 work on both the T5, and Lifedrive, then great...less versions, means less things for developers to test on.

engadget.com does podcasts to. And don't ever listen to solomedia.org/podcast :)

also, I would not update the lifedrive once palmone releases and update for it now. The update may prevent this reset thingy from working.

also I'm proud to announced I'm getting a zodiac 2!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Ah, but they don't have a Palm OS focus. Kinda the same reason I don't count Dawn and Drew as a Palm OS podcast.

ROFL!

New comedy duo :D

*ahem*
I think he was asking why Palm don't release updates for all Palms.
The reason is that it isn't financially viable compared to the effort involved. That and they want you to buy their new expensive gizmo, not cling onto your ancient piece of crap that still does everything you want it to do :D (Like all us TH-owners... :p)

Anyway, enjoy the Zodiac, it is indeed very nifty :D

This update is great. Like you said, it only freed up like 5-6 mb for me but it's nice to know that they fixed almost everything people were complaining about with the T|5. I didn't know about the recurring problem, so I guess it's fixed without my knowledge. I have noticed that my T|5 is faster, as you did. It's kind of funny, all the rants have been solved. I wonder what people will complain about it now (No vibrating alarm, voice recorder!) Other than that, it's nice. My update went almost smooth, the reboots scared me... but all is well! Thanks Jeff for the great Podcast (rant free, which i like even more!)

 "Only" free'd up 5-6MB??

I'd love another 5-6MB of internal RAM!
And I bet most other users (Aside from the Zodiac 2 people) would as well! :D

I'm just worried about what you are going to do when you realize it will cost you $39 to upgrade your x50v to the new version of Windows Mobile...

This update is great. Like you said, it only freed up like 5-6 mb for meUntil you realize that its because Palm's patented system actually backed up all but about 5MB of your data, accounting for the extra space when you restored the backups.

I know, I am really complaining on the difficulty of making a program that can do a full backup, since the OS tries to copy protect files.

first of all, this is a hole new operating sytem, not 5.4.5 to 5.4.8. it is 2003se to 5.0! I will pay for that upgrade. and at least they offer upgrades. and this is a major update! from 2003se to 5.0! thats like windows 2000 to windows xp! and I bet palmone won't offer a $39 offer to cobalt. and how do you know? have you been stocking me on aximsite like jeff too?

If you buy an Axim x50v now, you will get the Wm 5.0 update for FREE in 4 months time. If you bought it earlier its $39. This is pretty standard, and its how it worked for the few PPC's that received OS updates in the past.

Good podcast Jeff. Your pace is much more even without rant mode. Miss the intro music though. Back on topic: you lucky T5 folks. E2 has OS5.4.7, Search bugs and crashes, inconsistent (or incompletely written) 5-way navigation in PIMs, sloooow G2 and there is no way to get BackupMan 4.x-5.4 to work for me (yet). I'm beginning to think that OS5.4.x is a field trial for Cobalt.

Value comparison:

2003 SE
-- 2003+S+E = 2003+19+5 (according to their respective placements in the alphabet)
-- 2003+19+5=2027
-- 5-2027=-2022

After critical analysis, it is obvious that in fact this is the largest downgrade an OS has ever received. The similar analysis on 2000 to XP gives you answer of -1960, which is clearly a smaller number than -2022, a difference of 62, and therefore a bad comparison.

As you can see, 5.0 is clearly not worth $39. And, BTW, I have not been stocking you, nor do I work at an establishment which does such things.

If you really have to know, you have on multiple occasions announced how excited you were about getting your upgrade to OS5, which is even inferior to the current Palm OS.

How about that for some Monty Python math???

Shoot yeah, I bet the alarms might even go off on time with this one 8 or 9 times out of 10 and I'm sure they have fixed that issue with closing programs that PPC users have been complaining about for 6 years. 5.0 might be better than WM2003, but lets not start comparing it to the Palm OS. I'll take the Bride of FrankenGarnet any day.

Great show Jeff!

While I find your rants entertaining and thought provoking, this cast was clear, well paced and informative. I upgraded my T5 at 3:30am this morning. So I can atest that palmOne has done a great job making the upgrade simple and easy to apply - even if you are half asleep! Now that's cool.

Thanks for the podcast shout out, and I'll talk to you all on the 1src chat!

I flashed my T5 and I have noticed a significant boost in speed.

I bought an HP HX 2750 last week. I am very impressed with it. This is the 1rst PPC I can safely say I like. It is expensive but you can tell HP really worked hard on the ergonomy, the materials, etc.

Great screen. Easy reset hole. WiFi/BT. CF/SD. Strong rubber grips. Nice colors. Replaceable batt. Good batt life. Love the biometric fingerprint protection. Front mic. Front speaker (nce and loud). No audio buzz. Awesome sound quality with HP bass/tremple controls (I always loved this from HP). No screen buzz. LEDs for all status (charged, charging, BT, WIFI). Easy power button. The Dpad is not so hot, but its OK enough to not complain. Very fast operations w/624mhz 128MB + big ROM store. No annoying light on the cradle (like for my T5).

And one of the most important reasons I got the HX 2750... WordLogic. This has got to be the fastest most error-free natural way of entering text on any handheld. I've emailed the developers for a Palm OS version for 2 years now, they just care. I really need this program because I enter tons of PIM info daily and it has to be fast and with the least amount of work possible.

Jeff Kirvin's podcast on how PalmOne keeps making developers' jobs difficult with constant secret changes reminded me of the issues and this made me revisit PPC again. When I went on HP's site, they had a promise to upgrade the hx2750 to WM2005, and that was what made the sale.

I still love my T5, and I plan on keeping it for quite some time. I am not closed to the idea of making Palm OS my main PDA again in the future but here are some pre-requirements I will be looking for:

- OLED screen. <---- Critically important.
- Wordlogic (or something very similar) www.wordlogic.com
- Respect ergonomic fundamentals. T5 is perfect in this matter.
- OS 6 or PalmLinux.
- WiFi BT built-in.
- Replaceable battery.
- Front speaker, front MIC, front power button.
- No HD unless it is used merely as storage like an SD. I want independant RAM/ROM execution memory not tied to the HD in any way.

Nah, it's subtle and kinda cool. It's nice that we all sound different. You're southern, Carl Brooks is obviously from Detroit, Tyler's a New Yorker, I'm a bland midwesterner (been in Denver long enough to lose the Texas twang), it's all good.

Tyler and Brad's Podcast was very cool.
I like two TH55 owners/developers doing a podcast. That was cool.

The 'cast that Carl Brooks did over at Palmloyal should be included as part of every new user's first media files played on their new handheld.
Just an excellent lesson taught there, and pretty well produced too, although a Windows sound crept in there. (No harm, no foul, considering the overall quality.)

...So, that wasn't Letterman with us on MG? Shoot! Anyway, I like listening to podcasts rather than reading a blog. You just build a connection when you hear a voice. It's somehow more personal in an increasingly impersonal world.
