try reset the hand held's connection type back to cable connect in the hotsync setting on your PDA.
next, try use an eraser, rubbing the connector of the sync cable/cradle, that might work as well

First try to reinstall the palm desktop over the top of the existing...this is non-destructive to any data that is already there.
If that doesn't work, find your data folder under the palm directory and rename it. For example, my Hotsync name is David George, and my data folder is named GeorgeD. I would rename it to 'GeorgeD.old'.

I am having the same problem. I have been hotsyncing my palm for the last year now and have had no problems. I have recently cleaned the connections, bought a new cradle, reinstalled the palm desktop 2 times, and performed a hard reset on my palm. I am using windows XP on a toshiba computer. I think maybe one of Microsofts hotfixes might be effecting the usb connection. My cradle button does not work, and I am still unable to connect using the hotsyn icon on the palm. I am extremely frustrated to say the least. Let me know if you figure anything out. I do not want to reimage my hard drive. Good Luck.

I'm currently having a hotsycing problem. I get the message "the connection between your handheld and computer..." It started happening after I re-installed Palm Desktop that fixed another problem. When this comes up I can usually just do something with the handheld preferences, but this time I tried it and it won't work. Any suggestions? I thought it might be that the palm driver isn't installed, but that wasn't it either.

I had this problem when I first started to use my *CLIE*.
Waht happened was that the USB drivers weren't loaded correctly.
Try realoding those.;)

You need to absolutely UNINSTALL everything realted to your CLIE. FIrst of cource you need to back it all up.
To do his you need to Delete the Sony Handheld folder.
Then reinstall and it should ask you for the drivers.
One in on the CD the other in in C:/Windows
