I have an NX80 with JackFlash and try to regularly backup to MS. This is not normally a problem because I have a 512MB and 1GB memory sticks. Now I also have 16MB Sony MS which I thought I may as well take advantage of because being only 16MB, it's not going to hold much in the way of music, etc. So I thought I'd use this as a backup MS.

With JackFlash, like most people who use it, I put what I can into flash so I have currently 5065K free RAM and 7972K free Flash. As I understand it, MS backup only backs up what is in RAM, so there is approx 12MB of data to backup. My last backup to the 512MB MS was 11,644K. However when I put the 16MB MS in my NX80 and try the backup, it says there is insufficient space. I've even tried re-formatting the MS immediately before the backup.

Now if I copy the backup files over to my PC from the 512MB MS and then over to the 16MB MS via Data Import, it copies OK and I can even restore from the copied backup. So what goes on? Does MS backup look at total data in RAM and Flash??

Thanks

Paul

There really needs to be room for two complete backups on the MS.

If the backup program has a "cancel" option, it is going to write a temporary copy for the new one, then delete the old one, then rename the new one when it is done. That way if your back up dies for some reason, you haven't destroyed your old one.

You COULD delete the previous backup before making the new one, but that leaves you with a time period of vulnerability.

Basically the best use for your 16mb card is probably to save certain "emergency" programs on it like JackFlash and FileZ.

Or you could get a more professional back up program like CardBackup that allows you to do selective files and only back up the files you absolutely can't live without if you have a failure away from your hotsync source.
