View Full Version : Wireless Lan Card

I just wondered if many people have used it and if its any good?
I have a wireless lan at work and home so I would have a use for it. But I was wondering if it would work as simply as my laptop does. As soon as I switch it on it picks my prefered wireless network and picks up a DHCP address and thats it....
Obviously you can surf and check mail through it but can you hotsync as well?

I wondered the same thing before I got mine. I have had nothing but good experiences. Surfing and getting my email about anytime I want is a pleasure. The setup took about 30 minutes. My main stumbleing block was and remains that I don't like to read the manuals.
The price for the Sony card is a bit steep but it was around the holidays and I found some x-mas money that helped pay for it.
I connected ad-hoc to my laptop this week but have not investigated apps to let me share files.

It took me much more time to get up and running than I wish. But I surf & download mail often. IM is great too. And I'm currently testing Mail clients to see which works best. I'm favoring ClieMail 'cause its integrated well with the camera & voice recorder. You can easily record, review and then hit the mail icon to send what you made as an attachment to an e-mail. Also, its integrated with Netfront. If you get an e-mail with a link, when you pick the link, it opens Netfront and goes to the site. Nice.
Beware, the documentation for the WL100 is weak. Anyways, what else ya gonna do with the big open hole at the top of your NX?

I got my lan card for the Clie today and it must be connected to the wireless linksys ok because the Clie says connected and the little green light blinks slowly. However I can not get to email or a web site. I have set up the mail accounts and it says it is getting mail but nothing happens... it asks me to check server name and port number... thanks...

Make sure you are manually setting the DNS and IP address of the wireless card. For some reason it does not always work correctly when not set manually.

I'd love to test, but my network requires PPTP to work, and that ain't available. It's very frustrating.

Yes it works well for me. It was somewhat of a bear to get working, but I perservered. You can leave the DHCP, but the WiFi card needs to have it's settings done manually for it to be reliable. If you use a combo wire/wireless with multiple PC's, it's my recommendation that everything be set manually so as not to clash when certain ones get turned off.
I can send/receive email, web browse, and hotsync just fine :)

The driver apparently had been written for simple needs only and not support the higher tech stuff. Sony should have given the option of either simple or advanced operations. That of course is my humble opinion.

OK, I tried that and got farther... but still no go... question... My other wireless cards in the home require a code key because of the encrypted access to the linksys. How do I set that on the Clie wireless? Or must I turn off the encryption on the linksys?

I needed to get a POP3 account. So, I upgraded my free Yahoo Mail which for a yearly fee, gives me POP & SMTP. At first I could only receive, not send. I learned that my ISP blocked such mail. Yahoo support said to check with the ISP, and use their SMTP server name, instead of theirs. I did, and now & can send & receive. What kind of ISP mail service do you have?

Oh, sounds like you have WEP set. So you will need to do the same in WL100 setup.

In Las Vegas, Cox Cable... keyed that into the email program, and can not get that to work either... everything times out.. and that green light just goes on blinking...

You need to set the encrytion the same, or yeah, turn it off. I recommend continuing to use it, so you still have the protection.
Go to the Network preferences and its in the advanced settings menu, on your Clie.

Steady blink is good, but you wanna see it flash fast when you move data.

I won't let me key in the code that the Linksys generated and if I key in the same code name... will it generate the correct key?

Your router can generate numbers, but not the Clie. Can you get the router generated numbers? If not, can you create your own key, like I did?

You are very kind to be so patient with me. I do have the key that the linksys generated, I used it successfully on 3 other PCs. On the Sony card at WEP I have tried keying the same name that I used on the linksys and keyed in the code from the linkssys but it will not let me over write the ****** in the field... I am going nut... quickly....

You're funny. I created another profile, and you're right, you can't type over. But , change the WEP menu again. Pick the same encryption. Like, mine is the 104/128bit(HEX). It'll reset to nothing-you can then type a new set of numbers.

Thanks. For Connect Mode... do you use Infrastructure or Adhoc...??
bucalo9

Infrastructure. I have WiFi router serving my Compaq Laptop & my iMac. I think you should use Adhoc when its just your Primary PC and your Clie.

For the WEP are you using 128bit hex on both?
When you have time, checkout the WiFi checklist:

Nope, I am using 64 bit on the Linksys and chose that on the Sony wireless... but it only allows for 5 characters... going to give it a rest for now... it is so frustrating and I know patience runs thin when tring to help someone who seems like he is an idiot... until I got this card today, I thought I was ok... now wondering...

I don't blame you, believe me your not alone. Sony certainly didn't make it easy. If it shows you as being connected, then the WEP key should be okay. Check out the link that I supplied for some possible hints, but it's not all inclusive. If you are connecting, then you should be past the WEP and SSID. I am not sure if your using a router or going direct to a wireless PC card of some sort.

Well, I did and so did some others, only for ClieSource to lose it's database. Are you talking to yourself yet? If so, then time to take a rest :)

Using the WiFi card in the Clie, has anyone tried to log onto T-Mobile's hotspots in any Starbuck's? Does it work?

I agree, especially for the price of the NX series. The closest I have gotten is Mergic's software. Unfortunately, it will not run on OS5. And while they inform me that OS5 development is ongoing, Sony devices may not be supported. It seems Sony is doing non-standard (go figure) things to make the WiFi card work. Color me annoyed.

I believe they have, a lot of valuable info was lost in the ClieSource database. You could look through some of the threads in the wireless forum.

Your issue might not be with just the sony wi-fi card. I haven't gotten a wifi card for my clie yet, but I do have one in my laptop, and when we set encryption up on our linksys access point, I could not get the avaya in my laptop to connect.. I finally gave up and removed the encryption. Till I have more time to fight with it.. But on the subject at hand, I agree with what everyone said. Most isps will not let you "relay" mail through them, in other words if your connected to one isp, and try to send smtp mail through that connection it won't let you. (the good isps are run this way) so double check that the email connection you have is the same as your isp. Check all settings again, and then go from there..
I'm hoping this thread bulks up to what it was before the crash.. I need to get a wireless card.. and I planned on just reading through the thread to get it set up :)
I know there were some specific settings, and some detailed instructions before, I just can't remember.. maybe someone who remembers can post them.

I had put down a lot of info previously in many posts that are now gone. That doesn't mean we still can't help you. I do ask questions for a reason and expect a response to interact. Making negative comments gets us nowhere, I say this not because of you, it's just been my past experience that only makes things even more difficult and frustrating for all concerned.

<DIV>Wireless HotSync Info </DIV><B>Listed below are some common problems and highlights:</B>
(combined for future reference)
The primary pc name has to be !!(double exclamation points) only!
Only works with the long preamble.
The Sony PEGA-WL100 is the<B> ONLY</B> card that works!
Use static/manual settings for IP and DNS addresses
Leave <B>power save</B> unchecked
Use infrastructure mode when on a LAN, even for the wireless HotSync
May not necessarily work on all Wireless Access Points, does work with Linksys, Dlink, Apple's Airport, and some others.
You can use an SSID of ANY.
Windows XP firewall can block a wireless HotSync.
First step is to get to connect with the LAN, then try to get the WAN side to work(gateway and DNS addressing)
Right click on the HotSync Manager Icon in the PC's system tray and select network as a valid HotSync method in addition to Local USB.
Lots of patience...
<B>The following info was supplied by Xaositek:</B>
network = ; wireless lan
go to details
if you haven't added a profile do so now.
ProfileName: (whatever)
Network ID (SSID): Any (case sensitive)
Go to advanced setup and turn off "PowerSaveMode""
Go to your hotsync program
go to menu
"Modem Sync"
set to "Network"
under LANSync, make sure its set to LANSync
Primary PC Setup
Primary PC Name: !! ;-- another must have this way
Primary PC Address: (the IP address of the computer to hotsync too)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (unless different from Admin)
Click ok
Go to the main hotsync screen
Click on the "Modem" box
then choice your network as "Wireless LAN"
DO NOT ENTER A PHONE NUMBER

Looks like it, congrats!
What about security, like a WEP Key? SSID is no protection. On some routers you can also set it up to allow only certain MAC addresses access.
On some, the power save option being on in the Clie caused tremendously slow speed connections.
A lot seems to depend on the equipment used, system application, and setup. For some it has been a real bear. The log-in issues are browser specific. The only way some of us could get the blasted thing to work and be reliable, was to set everything manually. There can be additional issues such as having a combo of wired Ethernet and wireless.

I don't know what is WEP, so didn't touch it. But I do have some problems when I login to some sites like ebay, paypal...The site won't let me login. Anyway, it works fine with hotmail.com .
Do you guys know any softwares that can download hotmail directly using wireless card? I tried One Mail and Ace Mail, both are not working. One mail gives me a fatal error, while ACE Mail even kills the OS, soft reset doesn't work, and force me to a hard reset...
What browser are you guys using? I tried Netfront, that is just too slow, too big and too many errors. So, I switch to WebproV, which works fine except some security problems.
Partial answers:
WEP adds security, otherwise anyone with WiFi can access it. SSID is not a security item, only identification if there is more than one Wireless Access Point.
You can enable your WAP(if it's equipped for such) to allow only certain MAC addresses access.
I use Iambic mail and pop3 accounts only, no experience with web based accounts.
I use Blazer and WebProV, but my browsing is general in nature. Any serious stuff is done with my desktop PC.

Your passcode on your wireless router needs to be converted to hexadecimal and then that has to be entered into the Sony prefs after the ssid. Character #'s depend on the level of encryption.
This is a common stumbling block and the reason most people turn off thier encryption and leave thier lan's open to the public.
If say your passphrase/word is "ringo" and your wep is set to 128, you'd convert it here;
http://www.necrohell.net/uplink/window/hex.html
and enter the result in the clie setup for wep after ssid etc....
Of course, no docs ever tell you have to do this. Good luck.

Actually when I set up my WiFi Adapter (USB device conneted to PC) to use WEP in Windows XP I couldn't enter a WEP key. Somehow this key was automatically generated and placed on the Clie as well. What's up with that?
n2ifp

I had to enter the WEP manually with my Linksys WAP11. It also had to be in HEX format for it to work in the WAP and the Clie.

Actually, I can't answer question re: xp. I don't use it and I hope I never do. I use W2000 pro and find it much friendlier. So many problems with the nx always seem to center around xp. I'm sure ms pocket os users don't suffer this plight.b
