I'm looking for a site to clip with these requirements:
Decent news stories (not just headlines) on one page
OR
Headlines and then full stories at the next depth one link deep
AND
Decent pictures.
I've been finding that most sites are littered with ads and dozens of other links that choke even at a link depth of one level. Either that or there are no pics because it is "PDA friendly".
An entertainment clip wth the same requirements would be nice, too.
Thanks!

OK. while not exactly what you are looking for (ie: few, if any pictures), here are the two I use:
WorldNetDaily:
http://www.wnd.com/avantgo/
MSNBC:
http://www.msnbc.com/news/MobileChannel/mmc.asp
Set both to a depth of 1 and set the images to convert to 256 colors.
I agree, though, it would be nice to have a more picture-rich site without all the extra crud (too deep or tons of ads.)

What I would love is to be able to access the Reuters news that is available through Avantgo on Handstory. Anyone have any ideas?

Yes! The Reuters site is ideal.
I've gone back to AvantGo because the OS5 Beta version 5.2 works perfectly full screen on my OS4.1 NR70, even though the software tells me it won't :p .

The Reuters sites are only accessible using Avantgo

Jim - that MSNBC Mobile page is REALLY lame. :D The most interesting looking article is a dead link, and they condense all the "news" down to a grand total of ... 3 stories. I actually watch a lot of MSNBC on TV, but I hate that sort of filtering that you get in the "Mobile" web sites.
Using Plucker (or the new Beta iSiloX), you can go to Yahoo's Reuters Top Stories page:
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=index2&cid=578
and then restrict the downloading of links to the
http://stories.news.yahoo.com
server.
Since it is not a "mobile/PDA" page, you will get all the left and right column link names, but the restriction I described will prevent it from downloading all those links (you'll just have to page a few times to get past them when reading the story).
PS One great feature of Yahoo!News is the "Oddly Enough" section :
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=index2&cid=757

Another page with all the Reuters news, somewhat cleaner than the Yahoo one, but with more ads is:
http://news.excite.com/provider/id/reuters.html
On that one, you'll want to restrict links to only those that match:
http://news.excite.com/article/
PS If you click on the "New York Times" link there, you can read the New York Times without registering! :D

I'm very fond of http://www.cnsnews.com/cell.asp . They have a summary of the article then a link to the entire text. The summary is usually several paragraphs long. It is my favorite new site.

Here are some more news sites. I am using HandStory with images set to convert at 256K colors. The depth is specified with the entry. Images tend to be minimal on most sites.
Of particular note are ABC News and Slate. They provide stories with pictures. ABC News set to 256K colors weighs in at 300-350K and with High COlor, 750-800K in size. Slate weighs in at 450-500K at 256K colors and 1100-1200K with High Color image conversion.
Also, Yahoo does have a Reuters feed in their Mobile section, but they are .xml files and HandStory won't convert them. I'm sure someone could come up with a CGI script that could convert the files to .html files, but that's beyond my expertise at this point.

You're getting different results than I did on these two clips.
ABCNews is great...works as stated, at the depth of 1. Nice set to high color and not that big.
Slate, on the other hand, wouldn't work for me at depth=0 or depth=1 (jumps to 1.6mb). A lot of the first page links would not go anywhere in HandStory...they must reference links offsite. Today's issue, e.g., I can get the first three but starting with "press box," "webhead," "television," etc., yields the infamous HandStory error "Cannot load the page."
Too bad. But the ABCNews link is great.

ABC News looks great, but AvantGo won't let me load it because:
The publisher of this channel has exceeded the number of subscriptions allowed through the My AvantGo service. To subscribe to this channel, send email to the content publisher and let them know that you would like to access their content though the My AvantGo service.
What a pain!

Yes, yes, I'm back to HandStory. The ABC News clip really sold me.
HandStory is really more readable.
I guess tweaking is more fun than actually arriving. . .
(Still pretty dumb that AvantGo limits MyAvantGo like that)

Too bad. But the ABCNews link is great. Yup. I made a mistake. I thought the Slate clip would work. I didn't check all the links but later discovered that the page actually sucks. So, it's into the trash with that one. I'm now sticking to the ABC News clip.

That's a relief...always wonder if it's my pda when that sort of thing happens.
Posted the .hsc clip for ABC news at turcic's and gave you credit for it (10 seconds of your 15 minutes-of-fame-allotment...) :D
