I don't want to believe that a hard-reset will erase the whole 4gb of data on the hard-disk...

I' ve heard that there are 2 kinds of hard-resets. The quick one, and the thorough one... Does that mean that the former one will prevent the 4GB disk from the data loss?

No, they both erase the HDD. The quick one is like quick format in Dos, the slow one is like a thorough format that throughly deletes all data. For the quick one you could probably use low level tools to recover your data, for the thorough one you will need forensic tools.
