I really want to love the tg50, but judging from many of the posts, it seems that Sony might have rushed this one. I like most of the things about it, but I've found a few problems, the biggest of which deals with the headphone jack.

When I plug headphones in, I can hear a loud pop when turning the device on and off. I hear a constant hissing sound, kind of like a weak AM station with dead air. Whenever I press a button, I get a buzzing sound. I can even hear it while playing audio, though the audio does drown it out a little. I have recorded a sample of it, available here:

http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~lrf22/tg50.mp3

In the sample, the initial pop is the device being turned on. Then you can hear the background static. The intermittent buzzing is button presses. Then there is another pop at the end when the device is turned off. Needless to say, this is unacceptable.

After I found this out, I went to BestBuy and checked out their demo model, and it had the same problem. I tried out the NX60 and NR70, and neither had the problem. What I want to know is, is this present on everyone else's TG50's?

As a side note... another problem I found... the Up/Down button.. it works fine when being pressed in Up direction (nice solid click when pressed), but doesn't work worth a darn when being pressed in Down direction (it seems that the button isn't aligned right).

Here's hoping it's just a bad first batch.

Have been discuss on this thread (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7851&highlight=odd+sound)

I guess this is a bad design of the placement of the headphone jack. it is placed too near to the memory stick slot, and to the major circuit.

Sorry, meant to post a link to that thread in my initial post...

I read that thread, but in it people were saying that the noises they were hearing were related to the memory stick. I don't even have a memory stick installed. These noises are heard when keys are pressed or when the system is just turned on and is idle.

I have the same problem on mine! I was going to return it and see if the new one did the same thing. Although i don't have the down button problem. i wonder if clie will give us a patch to fix the problem or if it's a hardware problem that can not be fixed. I tried a brand new lexmark memory stick and it had the same problem with the noise! I bugs the hell out of me!
let me know if anything else come up!-any new ifo

Hmmmmm, FWIW, no problems here. FYI: Sony Memory Stick; Jensen Digital Audio wrap-around-the head (yellow -- plastic!) headphone. (Grabbed the h.p. at a sale for under $10-- over 2 years ago; I remember goodies like that).

Has anyone noted a dependence of the unwanted 'noise' on the headphones used? I'm just wondering if plugging in different headphones makes any difference.

Hmm...maybe a higher quality headphone, with higher noise filtering is better

try moving around possible interference.

Headphones with filters might help to get rid of the noise, but it doesn't get rid of the fact that the noise exists. As I said, I tried two different TG50s, both had horrid noise. Using the same headphones, I tried out the NX60 and NV70, and no noise.

Whether this noise problem exists on all TG50s, I don't know. Some people might not notice it because of the type of headphones they use... I use the Koss Plugs, which fit into the ear canal, giving better isolation from outside noise (great for the gym).

I sent the TG50 back.. I'm sticking with my SJ30 for now.

The noise problem is one reason why I returned my TG50.

I've noticed the popping, but only when starting/stopping playback. Not a big issue to me. Never heard a buzzing sound, though.

Don't you guys find the jack a little hard or stiff to pop into the TG50 clie? It seems that it's compact jack causes the headphones to spew out the un-needed static, hisses, and whatnot. The poping sounds happen whenever parts of the jack come in contact with its place (where it lies and sits when plugged in correctly).
