View Full Version : T5 incompatible with newest bluetooth phones?

For T5 to communicate with a Bluetooth phone, it first asks you which phone model you will be communicating with. Only the models listed in PalmOne's old "Phone Link Update" (Nov 2004) are supported!
I bought a Motorola V545 some months ago. The T5 lets me select only from the models TP280i, V500, V525, and V600 when setting up Bluetooth. All models are incompatible. They do give me some functionality (e.g. internet access) but do not allow me to send contacts or SMSes to the phone (no connection possible and "Incorrect response from phone", resp.).
PalmOne does not seem to be interested in keeping up to date their compatibility. Déjà vu: the Adobe Reader supplied with the T5 is incompatible with the T5. [Note: I take this back in a post of 06/12/2005]
I hope I overlooked an option, because this looks really bad.

Actually Marko, for one reason or another, palmOne devices have always been slow to support the Moto version of the BT stack. There are some work arounds, if you search this site for the V555, you will find the connection settings that you would need.
Keeping up compatability for the many phones that are out there is easier said than done when phone manufacturers themselves are not fully compliant either. Not saying that you shouldnt have an angst with palmOne, but that your complaints should also be centered towards Moto.

I have a v551 and the V600 driver works fine.

How about a Nokia 6620? There are no specific drivers for this model. The best I can do is the Nokia 3650.
Anyone have any experience with this issue?
I haven't done a search yet, but has anybody had any luck with a Verizon v710?

Here is an answer from a palmOne representative posted on forums.palmone.com (which is offline at the time I write this) by "nicholsg", regarding compatibility of the T5 with BT phones (here a RAZR V3), Jan 8, 2005:
Thank you for contacting palmOne Technical Support. My name is Pramoda and I will be helping you with your query to know about the Phone drivers available for Motorola Razr 3 in order to connect it with your Tungsten T5 Handheld. We do not have a Bluetooth software driver written for the Motorola Razr 3 mobile phone. We do not know at this time whether we will be creating one. We can only recommend you trying to search for third party sources for a Palm handheld compatible Bluetooth driver. We cannot commit to writing one since there are so many mobile phone models coming out every day.
and a simple solution in the same thread by "sddales":
Try This... If you go into your Tungstens preferences and go to Connection you will be presented with a list of available connections. Choose to create a new connection. Give the connection a name (i.e. Motorola or V3) and use these settings:
Connect To: Phone
Via: Bluetooth
Device: <Name of phone> (In order to fill in this you will have to go to Bluetooth link on your Razr and click find me to put it in discoverable mode. Choose your phone when your Tungsten recognizes it)
Model: Standard GSM
For my Motorola V545 (a European carrier exclusive of the V535, as are V550 and E550) this "Standard GSM" solution works better than selecting V500, V525 or V600 in the T5's Bluetooth menu. I can now use WAP, send SMSes, but I still cannot send contacts to the phone.

Adobe Reader incomaptible? That's not my experience - it works fine on my T5. I think it's a horrible app, but it does work. Why do you say it is incompatible?
Cheers,
Tim

Somehow, Tim, my first installation of Adobe Reader on the T5 wrote the pdf contents partly over the bottom control buttons upon scrolling down, which then did not work anymore. Also, the Reader does not support the screen resolution of the T5, so I thought this was the cause of the problem.
However, at some point I reinstalled the package, and then it worked fine. I cannot think of an explanation, but you are right: Adobe Reader is compatible with the T5 (except for the low resolution) -- thanks for the correction, I will add a comment to my original message.

Marko,
I am very disappointed with the response from PalmOne on Bluetooth rollouts for new phones (Nokia and Moto) and the palmOne handhelds. Go to a third party vendor? That is a great way to support their customer base.
Acrobat for Palm - the Adobe version is buggy - I have a real problem with graphics converting and acting properly on my T|T5.

Dump Acrobat for Palm. Go for Native PDF viewing with Picsel browser
Antoine/Twizza posted the leads earlier in PIC and there was a Treocentral thread on this.
Anyway I tried it out and it works (tested on my T3 & T5) :

On the T5 though, the Dpad scrolls he document only sideways and not up&down.

Palmdoc88,
The pictures you have on Livejournal appear to be on a T5 at 320X480. If so, how did you get Piscel Browser to open to 320X480.
Also, when I tap on "Preference" it causes a crash. Do you find the same thing?

palmOne have recently issued a phone link update - download and install it and quite a number of new phones have been added. My Motorola V3, one of the new models, now works fine.
