View Full Version : Okay, got a TG50, but what about my old apps?

Alrighty, I finally picked up a TG50 (had been trying to decide between teh TG50 and the NX60/70). It's charging right now. One question is can I transfer all of my old apps and games from my T-615c to the TG50? I was just planning on backing everything onto the memory stick with BackupBuddy and then restoring onto the TG50. But I have no idea if this will work or if it's the "proper" way to do it. I guess I could also sync to my computer and use the same name as the user.
I actually purchased all the apps and games (i.e. vindigo, astraware game packs and such). Does anyone know if the registration just transfers over or is device-specific?
Ideas? Thanks in advance!

uh, a lot of your programs will transfer. However DO NOT do a straight up restore from your t615. Search around the forums, there are detailed instructions somewhere. If I find them, I'll come back and post a link.

rename your backup folder
install the sony palm desktop
sync your tg
then install the apps one at a time to see if they function properly
That's what I would do just to be sure.

Create your DateBook (if you'll be using Agendus 6x or DB4/5) and ToDo categories directly on the new device BEFORE syncing. Otherwise, you'll lose 'em. Ask me how I know this. (sniff! snort!!)
Search FIRST for each program you care about, to ensure (1) you have the latest version and (2) OS5 compatibility. (The latter is no guarantee, but it ups the odds in your favor.) Do NOT rely exclusively on PalmGear or Handango. Instead, check the developer's home page, which is oft times more current that the retail sites. If the program claims compatibility with BOTH OS 4x and 5, do a backup prior to trying it.
(Caveat: Agendus 6x DeskTop does NOT comprehend hi-res icons. Tosses consistent errors in the HotSync log, but the data is fine. Just an irritant.)
PalmGear related Tip: Their search box drives me nuts (short drive, granted), so I instead use the free IE Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com). Always add
--> product-id <--
to your keywords, as it **guarantees** you'll get **only** the true program pages in your hit list. Travel to PalmGear, add that term in the toolbar search box, plus --> OS5 icons hi-res <-- or whatever, click the "search this site" toolbar icon, and you'll get a quick on-the-mark listing of what you care about. (If you want to use a phrase, use hyphens instead of quotes, i.e., hi-res-icons as opposed to "hi-res icons". The latter will skip "hires" listings; the former catches both variations.)
Oh- one more thing. The ($5.95) TRUE OS5 "Icon Manager" is a joy, which I got at version 1.1. dbIcon and other icon mgrs will munge your hi-res icons, including Agendus' built-in doohickey. A few days ago, v. 1.2 was released. WAIT for the next version. 1.2 has a bug-- resets when you try to delete an icon set. Developer is aware of it, so a revised version should be posted in the near future.

If you are like me, I collect all my Palm programs in the
Add-on\miscprog\"subfoldr" and install
from scratch (.PRC, .PDB etc)
Now my question, suppose you backed-up all your imporant info (contact, docs, etc ) How can you restore the TG50
to its factory default?
In short, erase all the app that I have installed.

Hard reset.

That's what I would do just to be sure. This is what I did too coming from the NR70. I only installed the apps I needed and everything else I'm trying one at a time. So far only SubHunt won't work with OS5 (at least the version I have).
