no, the title is not what you think...

I know that there are people on 1src who are on very friendly personal terms with folks at P1. Given the wide range of misinformation and questions going around about the LifeDrive, maybe someone from P1 should hop in here and clarify things? As the days go by, unless some of the details/issues are at least discussed in some official manner, I'm afraid that the LifeDrive will really get cast in a bad light whether it deserves it or not...

in thinking about this for a couple more minutes, here's what I'd like someone from P1 to say:
1. Reviewers had access to different builds of the hardware/software configuration, so that would account for different performance results;
2. The LifeDrive memory works like this: ...
3. A hard reset does/does not erase the contents of the hard drive;
4. Seek/access times to the HD are a little slow, but we're hard at work on a patch that will dramatically improve them;
5. There will/will not be LifeDrive Smart File Management software for the Mac. If not, we're working with MarkSpace to help them do it.

These are my questions. Anyone have others?

1. Reviewers get the final product that you play with. There are only difference accounts of performance because of differenent points of reference. For example, one who uses a Treo600 usually and then reviews the LD has a different perceptino of performance than one who uses a T5 and the reviews teh LD.
2. Memory discussion is best on MobileTechReview and BargainPDA reviews. In short it is all on the HD, and there is a hidden portion of memory that is used for heap and casching.
3. palmOne's site tells that best.
4. from my co-writer at BargainPDA, seek times are fine, it is the copy to RAM that slows things down
5. You dont get the LD specific program, but can mount it and play via the i-apps as one does with the T5.

I don't think so as it was noted earlier (http://www.1src.com/forums/showpost.php?p=812765&postcount=22) that there are different OS versions.

So that means, Folder Sync does not work in a Mac?

ACcording to the palmOne site (http://www.palmone.com/us/products/mobilemanagers/lifedrive/smartfilemgmt.epl)

Folder Sync seems to work on the Mac. But I know that Files didnt work on the Mac for the T5.

I always read your comments with a great deal of respect - you've got it all going on, imho. I'm having quite a difficult time deciding whether I can recommend the device or not, and I've already had two clients call and ask about it. It's fine for me to play on the bleeding edge but I can't take 'early adopter' risks with clients, and I feel like there is a lot of confusion going around already (24 hours after release) and a very tight-lipped P1 (as usual). They're not making it easy for us to recommend their product.

P.S. And NO, this does not mean I'm going to start recommending any PPC devices to clients.

IN your position Mareuter; I'd hold off on recommending the LD for about a month. That will give ample time to get bug reports and any other issues confirmed. That said, the LD is a heck of a nice device, and well enough stacked to keep in the minds of your clients. Hopefully, they wont lose much by waiting, if so, the next best thing is the Treo 650. They might like that even more (probably without the camera if they are in a sensitive data field).

I've got one ordered from Palm and am salivating waiting for it. I'm looking forward to loading all of the basic utils that I carry around to clients (Ad-Aware, RegScrubXP, etc...) onto it, and shuttling files from them back and forth.

Plus, it always seems like things get overblown (I keep saying that to myself) in the first days.

Yeah, those camera PDAs. Great for the average consumer, nightmare in the workplace. (I'm sure you know what I mean ;-))
