Not be be a doubter, but I'll believe it when I see some personal pics of the device. My corporate rep for CompUSA said that NOBODY has them yet...and that most stores don't even have one for display. Not to imply anything, but there is always that burden of proof...

I stopped by my local CompUSA on the way home from work and they were just bringing them up from the back to stock behind the PDA counter. Looked like about 15 or so. They didn't have a display model yet. I didn't get one, cause I'm still debating the purchase.

Palmosc.com Can you check how much _HEAP_ memory does this pandora's box have?
This issue is extremely important and usually ommited by users. For example, T5 has only 4mb of heap, (despite 12mb on T3 and TC) - and this is the reason it cannot run Doom2 ,LjP, GuenaPig.... w/o hacking).
In order to check the heap do one of the following:

a) Launch TCPMP, go to Menu->About
b) Launch Isilo Reader, go to Tools->System information
c) Launch REsco Explorer, go to Menu->Tools->Ram info
d) Launch Palm Commander, go to Menu->Tools->System Info.
e) Launch LJP, it shows free dynamic Ram right away.

TIA.

The Dram is 32M and I would assume it's organized as on the T5. The minimum db size is 32bytes as on the Te2.
There are some new guidelines for developer to optimize applications for the LD.

Apparently CompUSA got the first boatload from China. The CompUSA in Newport News, Virginia had 15 of them when I walked in there is morning. Then they had 14. My LD is alive and well and spinning it's little heart out. :D

Well then you're the man to answer everyone's questions. How's the speed of the thing? What are your impressions?

Zano2004
05-19-2005, 04:31 PM
Just a touch slower than a T5. Display is the same except for the icons across the bottom. Fits the hand nicely even tho a "brick" thick. It's like a T5 with WiFi, Voice Recorder and a hard drive. Drive mode is much the same as a T5. I haven't done a complete test drive yet. The only application I've loaded at this point is Agendus Pro, which loaded and ran fine. Now all I need do is beam my Contacts, etc to the LD and give that a test drive. There is 64 Megs of program memory just like a T5, which the user gets access to 55 Megs like the T5. THe reset button is a lot nicer than other P1s. the stylus point fits into the hole. You don't need to unscrew anything to get to the "paper clip". The unit does get a little warm from HD activity, but not hot. Uses the same power and hotsynce connector that the T5 does.

Thanks Zano. I'm about to upgrade from a T2, where I keep nearly everything on an SD card anyhow, and it can take a second or two to load, so I'm starting to think I won't notice a difference.

Let us know any other thoughts that crop up about it. Thanks again.

Does it really take 6 seconds to switch/load an application?
No

If it was run recently, it is instantaneous.
If the hard drive is spinning, less than a second.
if the hard drive has to spin up, one to three seconds.

I got a chance to play with one using the final OS last week.

I called CompUSA and was told that CompUSA does not carry that product! (She said specifically no CompUSA in the Country!)

Anyway I stopped there after work and there it was on display!

I played with the display model for a while and have to agree with foghead on the delay factor. Worse case seemed like only a couple of seconds and lots of apps on my older NX70 don't load that fast either.

So I whipped out the ol Visa card!
Just got home and starting to unpack it :D

I paid $499.99 plus MN tax.

The salesman said there was going to be some kind of promotion next week, but he didn't know any details. He thought it was going to be some kind of giveaway (Maybe a memory card?) and not a price reduction. Anyway, he said I could take advantage of it by bringing in my sales slip.

This thing is AWESOME!!!!
I've put my LifeDrive through my test of everything it does. :D :D
Seems very stable. No crashes. Got all features working without a hitch. Easy setups. Some complain about its thickness, but it isn't that bad. It doesn't get hot, just a little warm, but it's not that noticeable. The T5 is nice, but the LD is incredible!
I found it in CompUSA, who has a 21 day no questions asked return policy, so I took it for a test drive. I'm keeping this sucker! The only personal application I've loaded is Agendus Pro, which ran flawlessly with my 700 plus contacts which I IR beamed to the LD.

In the NY User group thingy it says that you can watch 2 120 Minute movies on one charge, and get around 2.5 days use using MP3's and WiFi. If the battery has been made better in some way (Slowing the processor?) this will be a KILLER device.

Please comment on battery life.

I got mine! Bought it at CompUSA for $500! It rocks!

If you've already ordered one online at PalmOne, just call them and they'll cancel it for you. If they ask for a reason, just make something up.

I was surprised at how very light it was. I was expecting it to be heavy. It's not too much heavier than my T3.

There is a definite lag in switching between applications. The only time I ever see long (6 sec) delays is when I try to load a large game from my SD card.

Also, I don't seem to be getting USB 2.0 speeds on my transfers to the PC. Perhaps this is because I am using a cradle that I bought with it rather than the supplied cable.

On that same point, if you have another $50 dollars to drop on a cradle, I suggest you do it. The cradle for the T5 is very small, very cool, and has a soft lighting behind it. Also, even though the audio jack is on the bottom of the LD, there's one on the cradle! Audiophiles rejoice!

I hit this thing as hard as I felt like hitting something I just paid $500 for, and I couldn't make the music skip.

Zano2004,

Please advise if you encounter any issues w/fatal exceptions; I've seen comments on diff forums that say that crashes might cause loss of all data on the 4Gb disk.

I know that people say that Palm is stable, but all of us have seen how new hw &/or sw can cause crashes & if all of your data goes south when you are away fm the PC you synched to - you are then the proud owner of a $500 mini-brick & do not have access to your data until you get back home or to the office.

Man, the LD sounds like a sweet-***** device! Too bad I just got a $250 Logitech Harmony Remote 880 and a new multi-disc DVD player ($134). Even with those new "gadgets" I still may sell my Zodiac 2, with extra skins and a couple of its 256MB SD Cards so I can get funds to put towards the LD.

I just wish I could see some comparison photos between the LD and other PDAs to see how it compares size wise. Some of the devices I'd like to see it compared to include the T5, Sony NX80V, Tapwave Zodiac and other 320*480 display models.

As I understand it, there is the usual hard/soft reset, but also a second kind of hard reset that lets you choose between doing a quick, simple erase, and a total, secure wipe. I'm not that worried about a hard reset because I haven't had one forced on me in years. Soft,

Here are some comparison photos to my NX70. (I think the NX70 is the same size as the NX80.) Obviously the LD is shorter. The NX70 has the CF slot that sticks out in the back so the LD is a little thinner at the top, and the NX70 is thinner at the bottom.

So you donīt have to save everything on the HD? This would eliminate the 6sec. problem.

What about the skipping of music when playing music in the background and swapping apps etc? Does it only occur with apps on the HD, in general or not at all?

I have the feeling, a lot of review were put out by reviers with no experience with PalmOS devieces...!

Yes, but only if I'm using very big and complicated programs. If I'm just switching to Address book to look something up, it won't skip. The skipping isn't a huge problem, because usually if I'm listening to MP3s, the device is locked and in my pocket.

If it is comparable to the T|C in size, then it isn't that big! I've owned a T|C before and I liked its size. It was a very pocketable device. One of my complaints with it was the lack of a backlit thumboard.

Saw the LifeDrive at my local (OKC) CompUSA store and tried it out for a while. It really isn't that big and feels great in your hand. It's no bigger than any of the other PPC's out there although just slightly thicker, which you don't even notice. It's response time was very quick, nothing like the reviews I'd read and to be sure I tested every default app to see how quickly it would come up. Granted they may all fit in the virtual memory but it was fast nonetheless. Nothing that would bother me, and I even tested a T5 next to it to compare. 3rd party apps that push the memory out may have different performance. YRMV.

I played a default mp3 adn then switched to something else and there was a pause, but it wasn't something I minded. I believe some are just to critical in their reviews.

Wifi connected easily to the 3 local hotspots in the store and browsing the web was straightforward, though a VGA screen is obviously more appropriate and will hopefully come in future models.

As they are all displayed, it was easy to compare to other Palm's and PPC's. Though one thing that bothered me was the answer I thought was given as to why a built in and not just a dual slot with a provided CF card. Supposedly it was because a CF slot takes up too much room. Strange, as I looked all around at the numerous PPC's that had just as big a screen (or even VGA resolution) and had dual wireless, and had dual slots AND they were *thinner*! Palm's engineers have a way to go in that dept. (if only the Dell X50v ran PalmOS!)

Landscape button was great and worked smoothly. The four main buttons on the front I wish were slightly more recessed as one submitter or review had said, in a pocket it might be easy to snag a string under one. You'll have to see it to know what I mean. Not a big deal though.

I did like the LED indicator and how it worked similar to your PC's HD activity light.

Holding it and seeing it work is what sold me. You can read all the reviews you want and believe the positive or negative. But until you hold it and test it yourself, you just won't know.

Me, I'm for sure getting one now (as soon as some online stores have it for cheaper), but wonder if the HD in a PDA will last or if it's a fad that will give way to the old dual slots, as flash memory gets ever cheaper, quicker, and more robust.

I sometimes wish Dell would engineer a PalmOS model, just to shake things up and show PalmOne what can be done.

Only you can answer that.
In my case I'm upgrading from an older NX70 and the reasons I upgraded were:
1) Faster processor
2) Hardware Landscape mode
3) Standard Sound system (Compared to Sony.)
4) Built-in WiFi

The hard drive is cool but not the main reason for my upgrade.

My NX70 was still working, but it was showing signs of age. So I was in the market anyway.

The LD is shorter than the NX70, and the thickness is roughly the same.
I use to carry the NX70 and a pack of cigarettes in my shirt pocket
I quit smoking three months ago, so carrying the LD in my shirt pocket, even with the case, is no problem :D

Battery life is good except when using WiFi, which drains it down pretty quickly. I should point out that I've been using WiFi a LOT during the past couple of days trying out features and getting wireless this and that working. I imagine when the novality wears off some, my WiFi useage will decrease and battery life would be more realistic.

One WiFi surprise is that ADDit, an application that comes with the LD, which is also has a wireless capability, has a little announcement "click here for PrintBoy wireless printing capabilities especially for the LD. SInce I have a HP 2710 Photosmart all in one printer and it has wireless capabilities, I had to give the FREE PrintBoy a try....... :D and it had another surprize..... a free upgrade to the next version that will have wireless color photo printing. I tried the ADDit download and once I got the printer configured, it black and white printing was amazing.... I should also note that I had to do some configuring of my wireless firewall/swithch so it would see the LD and the printer. It's almost that P1 had my printer in mind and went to PrintBoy and said, let's do color photo printing. Since I don't have and can't find a bluetooth phone from my cell carrier (Verizon), the only bluetoothing has been some file transfer between my T5 and LD.

I'm sure that some will find fault with some aspect of the LD and we will always be able to say, yes but what about this or that. I find the LD a truely amazing thing even with the less than perfect things we might find.

BettyE,
The camera wasn't that good in the NX70 and I didn't use it very often, but there were a couple of times it was handy to have when my regular digital camera wasn't with me.

Then there's the business aspect. More and more businesses are concerned about people bringing cameras into their business for security reasons, and I do use mine for business.

My phone has a camera too. (But I really havn't used it.)

Bottom line is that I thought about it and it wasnt enough to stop me from buying the LD. I also considered there may be a camera module available at some time and since the LD has lots of memory the camera wouldn't need any.

Thanks for explaining your thought process, Festus.

I know what you mean about businesses, one of my customers commented about it once, but didn't make me do anything about it.

I travel a lot and sometimes it has been handy, and I was REALLY glad I had it, but that was maybe twice in the few years I've had it. So, maybe it isn't worth. Maybe I just need a smaller digital camera that is easier to take with me, or a camera on my phone, as you have.

Zano2004,
Is the LD a replacement for your T5 or are you still using the T5 as well?
I've been pretty happy with my T5 but I'm tempted to snap up a LD.

One thing I do regret is that my digital camera is a Sony Cyber-Shot. It's not very old so I don't want to buy another one right now.

Naturally it uses memory sticks and not SD cards.

Anyone ever seen a memory stick to SD card adapter?

Palmosc.com Can you check how much _HEAP_ memory does this pandora's box have?

In order to check the heap do one of the following:

a) Launch TCPMP, go to Menu->About

TCPMP says there's 3.5megs available. I'd assume it has 4 like the T5.

for gods sake!
please someone make battery test! because those "battery life is ok" - means nothing!
could someone run BatteryBench
or PocketTunes (many mp3 on hdd, backlight at minimum)
or TCMP (with video)
or turn on WiFi and screen on

and say how long LD will stay alive (true times, dont add any time just bacause that is device you own)

that would be great, bacause now there are no normal battery tests (only bla bla bla)

tnx!

You need to calm down, dude. Read a book or something.

This may not be what you're looking for, but I ran my T3 (with WiFi SD card) and my LifeDrive (with WiFi on) for about 25 minutes last night to compare the battery life of the two. I surfed around to the same websites, in attempt to put the two handhelds through the same conditions. Both had BT off and brightness at minimum. The LD was not fully charged, only at about 95% power. The T3 had a full battery.

After 25 minutes, I immediately checked the battery levels. The Lifedrive was around 77% and holding fairly steady, the T3 was holding steady at 56%. I then turned off WiFi and allowed approximately 5 minutes for the units to "cool down". The T3 jumped back up to 72%, while the LD went up to 83%

The conclusion is then that there is a definite difference between the battery life of the LifeDrive and that of the T3. However, this difference is not large. The LD, however, has other things going for it. I have found Blazer to be much easier to use than WebPro, and pages seem to load much faster on the LD. Also, pages are formatted better. Both devices, for the test, were displaying the pages in "Normal" or "Wide-Page" mode, which that no formatting was changed to make it more suitable for handheld display. Everything, with the exception of one or two graphics on Yahoo!, displayed perfectly on the LD, whereas the T3 messed up several items.

Therefore, it is my opinion that with the combination of marginally better battery life, faster page loads, and better formatting, the LD wins hands-down.

Hope this helps.

erm? calm down? i am just asking someone to make real battery tests, because all those reviews say completely different things.

from your words it seems to me that LD has little increasing in life time in comparisson to T5.
T3 990 (or something about that)
T5 1300
LD 1600
so there should be 23% increasing over T5, but LD has hdd -> real increasing will be lower (10%? or even less)
tnx.

but still, to have real tests (from 100% to 0% battery charge) would be good.
anyone else?

When you say things like "for gods sake" and use a lot of exclamation points, I take that to mean that you are so desperate to see a true battery test that it is causing you deep emotional pain.

But it seems I am wrong. :D

I take a lot of long plane flights (12 to 14 hours to/from NY/Tokyo). For my NX70, I have a charger that can hold AA batteries and operate and/or recharge my NX70, if needed, during a flight. Considering I use my NX70 for e-books and also for audio applications during the flights, I have had to use this additional charging on several occasions.

Has anyone identified any kind of on-the-fly recharging that would be available for the LD? I would hate to run out of battery power mid-flight when I am trying to read a book on the LD.

@BattyE, spotted this charger (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38935&item=5778221941&rd=1) on ebay, it reminds me of the one I have for my Clie NR70 and the posting claims it should work with the Lifedrive

There's also this (http://www.sfplanet.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/4017/subcatid/25082/id/131808) charger from SF Planet. It says it's for the T5 and Treo 650, but since the LifeDrive also has the Athena connector it should work. I'm thinking about picking it up myself.
