I don't think that's possible. The USB port on the Clie handhelds probably aren't host ports. I haven't had much experiene with the NX series, but it's very rare for a handheld to have a host *and* device port. The only way I can think of is if you somehow hack togather a CF to IDE adaptor. IDE to CF adaptors exist (ie connect a CF card into a IDE chain), but I'm not sure if the reverse is possible.

No such thing as a foolish question. krhainos is correct in that a USB client (such as a Clie) cannot connect to another USB client (such as a USB Hard disk) but...

I use smbmate to access my USB hard disk ( www.xsdrive.com ) via Linksys Network Storage Link for USB 2.0 Disk Drives ( http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=35&scid=43&prid=640 )

Q.E.D. !!!

I would recommend that the moderator make this a sticky topic and / or include this info in the faq.

Interesting. You'd still be PC dependent though. I think Xane was after a more portable solution.

I see I have a 'Printer' option in the 'Resource Type' of the SMBMate connection edit set up.
Would that be for Network Printers only?

This is completely portable. No PC required since NSLU2 is, in fact, a PC! Thats how it is able to get around the USB client to USB client connection issue.

WRT your question about printer shares, yes that refers to network printers or other printers available as shared resources on the LAN.

So, if I understand correctly, you connect your Palm and Hard Disk to the NSLU2 (which is slightly bigger than NX80) via USB 2.0, to transfer with SmbMate, music, photos etc, right?
It is still a lot of gear to carry around, no?

Yeah, the NSLU2 is Network Attached Storage(NAS). You can plug it directly into the network. But I'd also have to agree that carrying around a wifi router, network cable, and the NAS drive is a bit much just to be able to access a larger hard disk.... :D Great idea though.

I think this solution would be somewhat smaller - http://usa.asus.com/products/communication/wireless/wl-hdd25/overview.htm

That's basically the same as the NSLU2 only wireless is built into it. You'd only need to carry your Clie and that wifi hard disk around. :D

That's a much better solution IMO, if you can set up an ad-hoc connection between that WiFi HD and the Palm. Still don't get it though, with the CF 2G cards affordable now, NX owners have so much easy storage space available already!
Business people might need something like that perhaps, certainly not me!

It is certainly a lot of gear to carry around, but for a photographer who has to travel a fair bit in India, it is well worth the effort. With this combination of equipment and my digital cameras, DSC P8 and DSC F828, I have a truly portable solution that lets me do everything I want.

The XS Drive has a card reader, so I am able to transfer the contents of a full memory stick on to the hard disk without breaking stride by pressing one button on the XS Drive.

I am also able to use the larger screen of the Clie to view and zoom in to photos I have taken, on the move, just by transferring the memory stick from the camera to the pda.

And when I need to select / clip or edit content I am able to choose files I want to transfer from the hard disk back to the camera / pda via the NSLU2

Compared to the hoops that other notebook toting photographers have to jump through - stop at a suitable spot, open the notebook, power up, connect camera / insert memory stick, transfer content, power down, put the notebook back and lug it around - my combination of equipment is more practical to use. Many people have told me so.

A 2 GB CF card is ample for most practical purposes, but if a pocket sized device lets you carry around 80 GB you have everything you could ever want with you all the time. And a good sync software will keep the portable hard disk and select directories on your PC updated automagically.

Sony has always positioned the Clie as a personal entertainment device and it truly becomes one when used with a portable hard disk accessed via the NSLU2 or the type of WiFi accessable hard disk that cerberus has provided a link to.

At least in India, you can use the Rent-an-Elephant service to carry all your kit! I suppose, in the field, your solution might be better, as WiFi would chew batteries rather quickly.
If you spend any time in Mumbai, I might see you one day at Leopold's....I'll be looking for a guy with USB leads sticking out of his pockets!
Happy snapping.
