View Full Version : JAmerican's Battery Extender: UPDATE

OK. I got all of my sh*t today so I could run a real test and JAmerican, you rock, bro. :)
I ran my UX only (no EB40 attached) down to 14% running video...as low as it would go running video until it froze up on me. It took somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes to be fully charged after I connected the Battery Extender loaded with the 4- 2500maH Energizer rechargeables. (No clicking noticed BTW)
Since, I have since purchased 16 2500maH AA Energizer rechargeables and I could be lost in the fuggin' desert for days, without food or water, but my trusty UX would still be "loaded for bear."
Thanks to JAmerican and everyone who participates here.

Dumb question, but im considering of getting battery extender so i got to ask. Is the battery extender that you have an EB50? the one that JAmerican uses? And is each of your AA batteries 2500? or is it all 4 combined to make 2500 MAh? Would be sweet if each battery is 2500 all together makes 10,000MAh...heheh I dun even know why i asked.

There are no dumb questions here.
The Extended Battery is NOT the EB40 but an auxiliary battery pack that holds 4 rechargeable batteries. I happen to use 4 2500maH batteries.
If you need more answers when you are ready to buy, I'd be happy to help you.

Iunno, thats what JAmerican calls it. So i might as well call it that so every1 knows what im talking about. But anyway, does this battery extender (that holds 4 batteries) work with the TH55 and zire 72? (zire 72 uses mini usb by the way)

it's not 4*2500mah, but 4*1.5v=6v with 2500mah.

That's correct except the rechargable batteries are 1.2V each. Totaling 4.8V

i actually ordered same stuff smeggie did since it seemed like a handy backup charger to my eb40. I have to agree that despite its size (its kinda big!) it really does a good job. helps me forget about my anemic (sp) internal battery. (i am on my second LFL battery which still performs miserably compared to reports i have seen here)
re clicking w/ brando usb cradle, or indeed any cradle. Apparently this is a contact issue and by being careful w/ how i dock ux50 into the new cradle i have manged to stop all occurances of clicking noises. which is good, since when you hear this you get the feeling that the next thing you'll see is smoke commin out of your ux.

Man lol.. isn't it funny how we're all doing these battery packs now?
I am so glad that I am a part of this community. You know how much money I've saved because of all these battery mod threads? Instead of spending $300 on an EB40, I've spent $3 on a battery holder from RadioShack. That makes the EB40 100 times more expensive!
Man lol. Even when you guys buy the cradle and battery pack for some $50-$60, you're still saving so much!
I just still wonder about alkaline batteries. Currently, my old NiCad rechargables are rather old and don't hold much of a charge. In the future, I may invest in NiHM batteries like you guys.. but what about your plain alkalines? The voltages sum to a value that sounds too large... but I thought that I read that someone here was using them? Or at least, why is it that you can use either alkaline or nicad/nihm batteries in standard electronics without adverse effects?

Be careful with AA regular batteries, they produce 1.5V. 4 of them together is giving your device 6V. .8V more than it needs.

I have found that the clicking noise (internal charging circuit turning off/on due to insufficient voltage) is associated with voltage drop due to the amount of current the UX draws during charging. When I used a retractable USB cable to link my mod'd (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85697) cradle and battery extender (extremely small cable diameter), the clicking noise was present but after swapping the retractable cable to a standard USB cable the noise stopped.
My recommendation to help the internal UX charging circuit remain “ON” (stop the noise), while using a you’re battery extender (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86622) is to only use descent sized USB cables and stay away from the retractable ones.

Nope, the TH55 uses an adapter similar to the NX, NR, & SJ series. The UX charges through contacts located on the bottom of the unit. The AC adapter is the same just the interface between the adapter and the pda is different.

I use a Brando USB/mini USB retractable and there were no clicking noises whatsoever. (unless they somehow matched the ever-present clicking in my head click for click)

So does the UX50 charge by using a mini USB? or a regualar USB? And does any USB work for it? or does it require a usb that can also charge as well?

The UX charges via a docking cradle, the power pack plugs into this docking cradle via a mini connector. The UX unit stand-a-lone can't be charged without the cradle unless you modify the internals of the UX.
A lot of members here have choosen to buy or mod their docking cradle as i have done here. http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85697

Lets say that the ux50's battery is completly dead. Has no more use and is completly dead. And if i attached the battery extender to it, would the UX then accepts the external power and turn on? Or will it just remain dead?

If your UX Batt is dead and you plug in a "Battery Extender" it would charge your UX's internal battery no probs, you can even use the UX while charging.
The way i designed my batt ext (Since JAm named his, I'll call mine a AM40 ;) ) you can plug it into your completely dead UX via a standard male to male USB cable, which will charge the UX and then i can plug a "external" DC power supply (7.5v-25v DC) into my AM40 which will then charge the internal batteries in the AM40 aswell.

....an overvoltage also turn off the charging circuit?
if the voltage is just "too low" why the feedback loop? you'd think the circuit would just stay "off".
perhaps any fluctuation in the supply voltage is all you need to produce this effect.
Amoon, how did you come to the conclusion that its a low voltage that casuses the clicking noise, exactly?
ps: did you ever fully investigate if you got more battery life out of usb charging? I have a sneaking suspicion this may be the case. I only have about 6 discharge curves (3 of each) but so far i get ~15min more out of battery time if i charge via usb.. of course my lousy battery still fails the test. =)

Not sure who you're directing this question to... but DCBAKER and I are using the charger cables that came with our Clies. This way, we save immensly cost-wise, as we already have a charger cradle.
It seems that most others, however, are using a USB cable, as it is more universal. This, however, will require you to purchase a USB charger cradle/case of course... (or if you're brave, you can mod your UX to charge from its USB plug) One benefit of this is that it's possible to get it working "out of the box" if you purchase a USB cradle and a pre-made USB battery charger.

OK
1. I modified my standard UX Charging Cradle to accept a standard male USB computer cable. With this mod I can plug a standard male PC cable into any USB slot on any computer then plug the other end (male as well) into my modified UX charging cradle.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~apmoon/screengrabs/1src/USB_side.jpg
2. I then made a AM40 (Battery Extender 4 x AA batteries) with a female USB socket in built. I can now use the same cable as above to plug into my cradle and my AM40.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~apmoon/screengrabs/apps/battext/usb.jpg
The cable I'm using to charge my UX from the computer or the AM40 is an everyday male to male USB cable, this cable did not come with the UX.

I believe the TH55 has a bigger battery, but the UX's battery is similar in size to the T-series and TJ-series, from what I've read here in the forum.

I don't own another Clie only the UX but I'm looking around for a cheaper alternative battery to possible mount inside my standard Clie docking cradle. I'm also thinking of opening my UX ( ) and modifying the mini USB connector, maybe.

It was the member named sonicboy who led me to this site. His site has many pics of the UX50/H. One of the pics is titled. "Got my UX50 Today!! Yah. I'm pretty certain that it wasn't a hacker.. My thoughts were that since Sony had begun showing signs of waving, ClieSource was too exclusive, and there would soon be few Cliers anyways. Hence, it made sense to merge with PalmOneCity (which was spawned off of ClieSource initially anyways).
I did miss the exclusive community that we had, but I think that it was a good move in the long run. As the Clie users had no more Clies to move on to, they would slowly migrate to PalmOneCity I'd imagine. So consolidating the forums was good in this light.
I remember how in the last days of ClieSource, that the site was closed down for quite a while. Then I came back to an unfamiliar colour scheme of white and blues.
I can't remember everything anymore now.. I briefly recall something about an irreparable database crash.. but was that April fools.. I can't remember. Eventually, 1src replaced everything. Though, I still have all my old posts.

I finally had an opportunity to test this Battery Extender in a real situation and I am pleased to say, that it worked flawlessly!!!
On my trip last week, I brought all of the charging paraphernalia that I recently bought and put it to the test. I charged the UX with the EB40 attached and it charged completely in just about an hour. I carried 8 extra rechargable batteries with me and unless I'm gonna be out on an extended trip, they will stay home next time making, I'm sure, the TSA very happy. I nearly got body-cavity-searched at the airport but in all honesty, the Battery Extender does look like it could be a bomb or an otherwise explosive device so I don't blame them for T-H-O-R-O-U-G-H-L-Y searching all of my stuff.
In a nutshell - I have more power than I need. When I go on Survivor, they let you bring one personal item. I'm bringing my UX and the Battery Extender.

Another satisfied customer. The battery extender and UX together make the UX the ultimate device. No wonder its the highest rated device from CNET.com. No other device comes close. LD has a 7.9. The TH55 has a 8.1. Thats .2 below the UX50 and .4 above the LD.
The UX rules.
