View Full Version : Plucker trouble

I've been having a strange experience with the plucker desktop. It just started happening out of the blue. When I update channels, the progress bars just fly right by and there's no real downloading going on. It tells me:
Fatal error while processing
And in the plucker desktop log I get:
No socket error 404
I tried Sunrise, but I got errors when I tried to update the channels. This make me think the trouble is with my XP machine. I can update successfully at my Win200p pro machine at work.
Has anyone got an idea of a fix?

New or changed firewall settings? The "No socket" error points to the Plucker app being blocked. To test, temporarily turn your firewall off and see if Plucker works properly. If it does, then depending on how your firewall settings work, you will need to tell it (the firewall) to allow Plucker to access whatever ports it uses.
If that doesn't help, you might contact "pruss" as he is/was one of the Plucker developers. Good luck! ;)

I switched the firewall off and it made no difference.
But I do have to log off to turn the firewall back on because of some kind of "shared" warning...

Try using sunrise or jpluck instead of Plucker Desktop.

Sunrise is very good, very fast, and relatively easy to configure. JPluck was great but has been replaced by Sunrise. I remember the Plucker desktop to be very problematic. Get rid of it and go with Sunrise . . . you'll never look back. You can right-click on any web page and click "Send to Sunrise" with the Sunrise desktop running. Then you can go to that feed and add link depths (if desired) and configure the photo handling settings (if desired). Then drag it to the top part of the desktop. Double-click and create a category and schedule how often to run. Be sure to save your .sdl file before exiting the desktop (it may auto-save . . . not sure).

I got Sunrise installed. When I go to paste a URL in the window of the New Item Wizard, it tells me
Could not retrieve source
java.net.SocketException:Unrecognized Windows Sockets: error: 0: create
Do you want to use this source anyway? Y/N
Ideas???

If this is a clue, the last successful pages that Plucker Desktop retrieved copy over to my memory stick every time I HotSync. It seems like a chunk of the Plucker Desktop is still lurking even though I removed it via control panel.

AHA!
It seems an app called Earthcomber was messing things up. After removing it I am now able to use Sunrise.
Thanks to all for the input!
