...For instance, can you take the
Aircard 555 and use it with
the UX 50,enabling the user to access the Internet
from a train, car, boat, or sitting outside on your patio?
Thanks!!

Nope...the AirCard is for laptops. It is a PCMCIA card. In order for something like that to work with the UX, it would need to be a MemoryStick card or a USB card. Also, the software that this card would use would also have to be made for PalmOS.
It would be neat if something like that came out for MemorySticks, but I doubt it.

so basically, there is no other way to connect wirelessly than a cell phone?

Yeah,
If you have the UX-50, you can use its bluetooth to connect to a bluetooth enable cellphone to ascess the internet.

This is a really stupid question, so pardon me in advance! But exactly how does the UX 50 connect to your cell phone physically?

It does not need a physical wire for the bluetooth connection, you just need a bluetooth enabled phone, and the connection is wireless.

I have the i500 Samsung from Sprint. Which I am almost positive is not bluetooth. Does this mean I would actually have to purchjase a separate bluetooth enabled phone to connect wirelessly on the go?

First of all, why would you get a PDA when the i500 is a PalmOS phone? The UX will basically do the same things that your Smart Phone does...I recommend just sticking with it. The only advantage of the UX would be the keyboard, which I don't know if its worth the investment.
Second of all, your phone does not have BlueTooth. Which does mean that you will not be able to connect via BlueTooth with any other device, hence the UX.
May I recommend, that if you are seeking an alternative to your smart phone, you should look into the Treo 650. It will provide the same OS as your Samsung, and it will also provide a keyboard and a camera. Here is some info on it:

From the inquiries that you have made here, I believe that the UX will not suffice your needs, and I recommend going with another smart phone, or just sticking wth yours, which runs the same OS as a PDA.

The i500 is great as a palm device and phone combo but that is it. I am looking for a device to browse the web, send sms messages and view my pictures from my sony cybershot. The i500 does not let you browse the web, which I need. I can send sms wuth a third party but it is a horrible service and rarely works. I have had the Treo 600 which I tarded in for the i500. I was not happy with the treo 600 because of the bugs and issues I had with the phone. I do not want the treo 650, I like the compact design of the i500. The UX 50 is something I want for different purposes that my phone can not do. My only question is, how can I use the internet on the UX 50 without a cell phone on the go?

You may be able to use the aircard in tandem with the UX-50 however you would have to plug the aircard into a laptop and somehow achieve connectivity between the two that way.
But that is kind of a self-defeating way of utilizing wireless, IMHO.

It should be possible to use infrared in place of bluetooth. This is how people used to do things before Bluetooth started becoming so popular IIRC.
The thing about infrared is that it will require a direct line of sight, and a relatively close range.
Don't ask me how to set this up though... I haven't gotten it working for myself.

Yeah, I've thought about that but because the UX's IR is such a POS, it likely would be more trouble than it's worth. Can you imagine trying to be on the web while holding both devices perfectly still???
YIKES!!! DOUBLE YIKES!!!!

did anyone mention WiFi, the UX50 can connect to the internet by means of Bluetooth, WiFi, and (im not 100% sure) IR.

I have my own "hotsot" at my house using a wireless LAN setup (Linksys box sitting by my PC).
My UX50 can therefore connect to internet and hotsync to PC wirelessly anywhere in my house and even outside on my patio (not that I can see the screen very well out there in daylight though bleh).
For travel away from home, I would have to rely on public hotspots at shopping malls, airports, etc. Pay-per-use in most places!
While I have set up my bluetooth phone to work with my UX50 for internet anywhere, I don't use it because here in Canada they make you sign up for expensive monthly data plans. Too bad there isn't a pay-per-use oh well. Rogers Wireless blocks data calls if you don't have a 'business wireless plan' hmph.
Make sure the UX is right for you. People have experienced some problems with theirs: the lack of native portrait mode, possible LCD screen whine, possible crooked screen, Memory Stick Pro only up to 2GB works, I forget what else. All very minor problems for me personally, but I could see how folks could be upset. I just love my UX50!

Wow, for the first time ever, I'm glad that I am with Telus. I get away with dialing in to my ISP and it only uses minutes. Really slow, but allows me to conncet with paying huge fees.
What happens when you try to use a dial up line?
Back to our friend Sandrac823.
I have to agree with .PoNeH on this. You have a pretty cool phone as it is. (a little dated now, but whatever.) Do you have data services set up with you're carrier?

hanks for all the information from everyone. I am trying to figure out if the UX 50 is for me. I have also been researching the Jornada 720 and 728. From what it seems like the Jornada can use a wireless connection card to make it be a mobile internet device. I am still not a 100% sure about that though. It is so hard to find information on these devices. I need to make my mind up it 2 days before the auctions end. I have contacted Sprint, Best Buy and Office Depot for help. I have not found one answer. Sprint actually had no idea what a connection card was....not that I really know either! Office Depot is selling the UX 40 for 599.00. I was wondering if I should buy it new? But that does not have bluetooth. I am so confused!!!!

I think Jornada's are laptops...the UX is not one. You should go for the Treo 650 or something similar if you're looking for a PDA with cell phone network capability.

Jornadas are HP's answer to Pocket PCs.

Maybe Sandrac has mistaken the UX50 for a laptop? That would explain the aircard questions. It kind of does look like a laptop in photos, even though it isn't. I know I was drawn to it because it was almost like an ultra-mini laptop.
Davinci: dial up calls to an ISP or private network get the 'modem whine' when dialed, but the carrier (Rogers) then blocks the data exchange unless the subscriber is signed up for a "Business Data Plan"...on top of regular wireless plan. I was with Telus for years, and switched cause I wanted a particular GSM phone from Rogers that I THOUGHT would work well with UX50. Oh well, at least I have the Wi-fi.

This thread reminded me - any workaround when a public hotspot requires a login ? (You can login using Netfront, but can't use any other wireless app as when you close Netfront you lose the connection...or am I wrong ??)
Tks

Welcome aboard!
Read through the sticky posts to get started.
Get a screen protector (I suggest Martin Fields) and an additional battery source. There has been plenty of discussions lately about batteries.

I am not confusing the UX 50 with a laptop, I was confusing how it could connect to the internet wirelessly though. It is realy hard to find information on the UX50. So when I would do a search for information on wifi or bluetooth- connection cards would come up. So I thought I needed one. Oh, and that is on top of the fact that the first Clie I looked at on ebay the seller told me I would need one to connect while traveling. I have actually had a hard time getting any information on the clie or wifi from anyone, even at Best Buy. Luckily, I found this website!!!!
My phone, while it is a great palm pilot and is compact, it is nothing more than that. It does not connect to the internet only to sprint's access site, can not really store pictures, does not take pictures, does not sms, and def. is outdated. BUT, I love the compact design with the palm features so it works foir me as a cellphone. I am hoping my UX50 will get me on the net, and store my photos fom my sony cybershot. Plus, from reading here, I found out that you can watch TV programs on it. My phone can not do that!!! I am REALLY looking forward to it. I just hope I bought a good one! Iam keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for all the advice and information! I will let everyone know as soon as I get it! It is being mailed out tomorrow!
