OK - I LOVE my Clie and its camera..!

Just put up a small gallery of images captured with my Clie NZ90, they are available in 2 flavors, the first one is Clie-Size which is the same Sony uses for the samples, 320x450 pixels, the other is FULL pop 2 megapixels, beware the big images are about 500k a pop to download. www.bophoto.com/clie

It is not the same as my digital slr.. but almost more fun. ;-)

One important thing to remember is ALWAYS use the capture button on the side of the Clie, press down halfway until the green dot come on permanently, the camera is NOT focused until then.

I have programmed the jog-dial to control the exposure comensation feature, it lets me quickly addjust the exposure by looking at the screen.

Generally I find that the color-temperature is right now when left on auto.

Digital Zoom is only available at the low resolutions settings.

Biggest wish would be a manual interface permitting 100% manual operation, I am sure this is possible and really just is a software issue... Come on Sony. Do it for us. (smile)

Great Picturs Bo,

just a quick question. The lowest two pictures (showing Venice like setting) almost look like the inside of Edmonton Mall.

Can you tell me where these were taken ?

Thanks a lot :)

Las Vegas - The Venitian Hotel.

The first one were my courtyard when we had all the rain 2 weeks ago in Los Angeles.

The Animations are straight GIF animations created from my interactive photography, I was delighted to realize that NetFont supports animated gifs.

Sorry about the bare-bones layout, I made the page to look nice on my Clie. (smile)

Yep, cool as it is - that software capture button is pretty much useless. I was also very bummed to realize the zoom was a sham, nothing more than a software scaling trick of the lo res captures.

I'm not from Edmonton I just barely remembered the place. Las Vegas looks beautiful though :)

Thank you Yttan, were you able to see the aminations also, I seem to remember you are surfing with your NZ90 via dialup..?

I played with a Olympus fisheye lens today, it let me take some wild perspectives. though only one sample made it to the gallery.

Nooo, Yttan, that is not what I meant. Just that I did not know what your bandwith were when connecting through the dialup. So I did not know if waited around for the stuff to load. (smile)

actually my dialup is quite slow when compare to broadband which i use it at home and office.

I think the speed for my house is 1,500kbps, office is 512kbps while the dialup is 112kbps.

How about the video capability of the NZ90 ? How long can you take (1-2 minutes) ? Or is it dependent on the MS you have ? Support sound ? stereo mode?

My NZ90 has arrived and sitting at home but I'm away. Am flying back tonight and will be testing this out tomorrow.

Cheers

VIDEO CAN TAKE AS LONG AS THE MS CAN STORE. But quality...sigh....160x112 dpi...

Bo,

I'm curious, are the colors in the pictures right out of the box from the NZ90 or did you pull them out a bit in photoshop. I use a Nikon D1 quite a bit and find that the colors can be made extremely rich if you want but usually right off the camera they are a little flatter to allow for a broader dynamic range,

Thanks,

Richard

Richard,

No tricks, it is straight Clie 2meg images. Typically consumer cameras are a lot hotter and richer than pro cameras, actually funny enough you should mention it because when I am reading professional digicam forums I always notice that "pro-sumers" who have spend the money on a top of the line digital SLR is complaining about the flat images. (smile). Sure hard to please people.

Everything said and done, the Clie camera is a very capable little camera, it tends to be a little dark, and I find that mapping the exposure compensation to the scroll wheel is the best thing. because it is easy to control the exposures this way. Most important, look for the highlights, if they are important - pull the exposure down a bit, becuase the images also lightens really nice in Photoshop if you want to.

Hi Bo,

Thanks for the reply. Well... those are indeed beautiful images for right out of the PDA. I haven't had a chance to play too much with the camera on mine because of work. I am a video producer and had originally hoped to use the movie function to scout locations and create moving storyboards but the size limitation makes it a little rough. You have however inspired me to get more into the still camera and will be trying your suggestion on the jog dial EV setup. Thanks again.

Richard,

We do much the same things with our toys then. I have been scouting all over for pano photography for clients.

www.bophoto.com/car-samples (requires REAL computer and QTVR)

Yesterday I put a Olympus fisheye on the Clie, have to build a clip to snap it on, it is just too much fun to ignore.

I think the funnest part of the Clie camera is that it is THERE, I do not expect a 6 meg file from it to sell, and it is always handy. I started not carrying a camera because my work cameras are toooo big and bothersome. its almost impolite to bring a Nikon with a flash to a party. He He.. The Clie however, it is just a ball. And people LOVE reviewing the images on the big screen.

Bo_: I like your panos. Have you tried to put them on your Clie? As I understand it, Kinoma has a Panorama plug in to view VR panoramas and objects http://www.kinoma.com/whatsnew.1.5.html#producer (I think they are still in beta on it though) . I tried it out some of their VR samples on my Clie and it is cool. If you succeed in porting VR panoramas and objects to your Clie let me know, especially if the Clie displays "hot spots" and links.

Bo_

Inthetin,

I downloaded Kinoma, it is a pretty cool app. but it does not "really" play VR.. it will playback object movies and it DO permit navigation by dragging right and left. however no hotspots. more importantly it does not truely play a panorama, it played with it for a while until I realized that it turns the panorama into a frame animation which is then played just like the object movies. one frame at a time, permitting you to drag back and forth in the frame stack. (actually I would love to have a app to do that for my preview thumbnails of panos.) The player have a fixed viewpoint with no zooming or panning up and down.

I contacted Vivid (the makers of clie video for the NR series) a month ago and they told me they would only consider making 320x320 video, etc. for the NZ if Sony released the specs for the NZ's camera software...

so doesn't look like it'll be happening....

Tellen,

I put my Memorystick into my PCMCIA card from Sony. Pop it into the the laptop. Then pulled the pictures off the card.

THe camera is working great, I am driving my motorcycle to New York from Los Angeles right now and have been photographing the trip with the Nz90...I will get some pictures on my site this weekend from the trip. Typically I get 40-50 pictures every day. Right now I am snowed in waiting for the pass over the mountains in Colorado to clear up before taking a motorcycle over it. ha Ha.

Bo, How did you take the "fish eye" photo in the camra store?

Bo_

Kevink,

I purchased a wideangle (fisheye) for a Olympus point and shoot digital, it was $250 and I made a clip to attach it to my Clie, it works great for panoramas and cool views.

NEW.....

I just posted a whole bunch of pictures - all captured with my Clie NZ90 while I have been traveling across the USA on my motorcycle, the Clie have performed wonderfully and am still doing so.

The pictures are not perfect, but give a good impression of the quality one should expect from the Clie. The clie have been traveling in my pocket and I am very impressed with how well it is standing up to the abuse.

pictures can be found here by clicking on the motorcycle trip link.

I used the NZ 90 to take the photos for The kickboxing center I work in. Downloading the photos from my Clie to my computer was so easy when i was designing the web site.

The photos can be viewed here

Ernie,

VERY nice, great work. (smile)

I really like seeing that people are using the NZ90 as a camera and learning how it is used.

Have you tried using the dusk-portrait setting (moon with a person) it is a long shutter speed which blurs ANY motion, but the flash fires and freezes it, give a very National Geographic look, worth trying for some art shots or banner shots on some of your pages.. (I would think)

(Say is that one young lady features in more than average numbers of images)

Hi Bo,

Like your pictures (especially the ones with the fog).

Wondering if you could tell me which model fish eye lens you bought. Would love to carry around a fish eye lens!

(If it's not any trouble, could you post a picture of the clip you devised? .. it would be pretty painful for me to drop a $250 lens).

Thanks!

Just wondering if you had any issues with the battery life?

I'm contemplating buying a new battery to resolve my inability to take more the 2 pics at a time

any advice is much appreciated

tks

i believe my battery was one of the old ones as well, but i am very lucky to get off 30 or so pics....and thats with a fully charged battery.
anything less than 90% initially, and there is no flash..

i don't have much experiecne with the new batteries, but supposedly they are much better off
