Got my Tiger Family-Pack and I've started installing it on the laty's computer, then I'm going to do my PB, then my G5 and then my G4.

I won an iPod Mini at the door. :D So I gave it to the laty since I already have a 15g 3G.

I'm not really sure what the difference between the single user and family pack is, besides the packaging stating I can install it on 5 comps?

The package content is pretty much the same as my single user Jaguar and Panther boxes. It has the same amount of coupons and even the legal info still states single use. And with J and P, I could install it on as many Macs as I wanted. Blah, I guess the difference will come down to support and showing my receipt.

Tell me how you like it as soon as you get down to the nitty gritty stuff. I'm very curious to see how you and Joel feel about it as soon as you spend some time with it.

I'll post more this weekend. But if it's like Panther, It will take me about a week to pick up on all of the nitty gritty stuff.

Anways, tis great so far, Apple has truly delivered on its promises.

Widgets are soooo freaking cool. It replaced some of my web links, like dictionary.com. Now I just need to locate a BabelFish Widget an I'll be set. :) The finder on my PB is definately faster. I kind of regret not installing one of my Tiger seeds earlier. I'm excited about making Widgets again.

*Rambles.....*

The laty's PB is up and running with Tiger and mine is also. Being able to perform an transfer via Firewire is great, it saves soooo much time. :) I've done this twice for her now, the first time when she accidently broke her screen hinges. I let her use my PB while Apple serviced it, and then again to move all of her stuff back to her PB with Tiger on it. :)

Now I'm going to do my G5, so hopefully Maya doesn't get mad at me. :)

But so far, it's been running great. I just need to finish puttin some of my Apps back on the PB. Right now it's just Photoshop.

off topic question: Where did you get your firewire cables? Did yours come with one of your machines? I ask because when my powerbook comes I'm going to have to exchange all sorts of stuff from my Sony laptop, and it has a 4-pin firewire on it. Compatability aside (I guess I'd find that out when I plug the things in), Do Apples come with cables to let me do this kind of thing? Or would I have to go out and buy some? If it comes down to it, I won't bother buying the cables and just do it over my router. I'm just a bit curious.

I watched the Dashboard qt demo on Apple's website, HOLY CRAP. That thing just looks freaking awesome. Unfortunantely I'll have to wait for the upgrade, but I think it would be better to upgrade my powerbook's RAM to 768 before I load Tiger onto it.

Ram is definately a better choice.

The Powerbook comes with a DVI to VGA adapter, Power AC, and a SVGA to RCA adapter. My external Maxtor came with a FW cable, where as I had to buy one for my scanner the other year. I bought it from CompUSA, so I probably paid way more than I should have, but it's a Belkin cable.

Maybe they sell a 4-pin to 6-pin FW adapter?

*Grumbles* Both Powerbooks are running great, but my G5 refuses to mount my secondary internal drive after installing Tiger, so I'm in panic mode. I can see the drive just fine if I boot off the CD, so I know it's still there. I've heard of this type of thing happening with Panther when it was first released, so hopefully Apple will have a fix shortly.

Tried putting Panther back on and my G5 won't even let me boot of its CD now. Anyways, this is my first serious issue with Apple, so I'm not ticked off yet and I knew what I was getting into by installing the first release of Tiger. Anyways, if I can't resolve this, then I'll be buying an external case and moving the drive out until Apple offers a fix.

Widgets are sooo freaking cool and convenient. :)

Ahhhhh, Thank GOD!!! My secondary drive shows up on my other Macs when starting the G5 up as a Target HD, so I'm now starting to copy over all of my critical files. :)

After I'm done, I'm going to erase the secondary from Tiger and hopefully then it will show up after boot.

I could always use my adapter I got with my iPod. Who knows.

Good to hear your stuff works.

Thanks. :)

Here's an adapter I found that goes from 4-pin female to 6-pin male.

Reformating my secondary from the Tiger boot CD fixed it, so it now mounts.

Blah, hopefully no more issues.

Holy Pooooo, Tiger doesn't ship with Stuffit Expander. :D Figures.... Well I should probably buy it, since it would be usefull for transporting Flash Mac projectors to PCs.

Blah.

Did I mention I love Widgets. :) They have a tranlation Widget and it works great.

HOLY CRAP!!!!! H.264 LOOKS SO FRAGLELICKING AWESOME!!! EVEN AT 2560 WIDTH!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

I've never seen video this good even at that Disney Alcapyoumonkey place!!!

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/hdgallery/

This makes up for the fact that Final Cut Pro 3 does not work at all under TIger and I know Apple did this intentionally, just like the QTPro serial number to force an upgrade. Blah. Well off to purhase what I had already owned.

Shite, now I must see how well H.264 plays on my PB. :)

I need a new Powerbook. :( Not only is the movie wider than my screen, if not in full screen mode, I get about 3 frames per minute. :(

Click hereth ot see the glorieth of a "true" 1080i movie;
http://www.bainne.com/fun/30_inch/batman_hd.png (It be a screenshot, so is huge and ucompressed at 4.3 megs.)

It looks crystal clearn when playing, even full screen. none of the compression is visible.

As soon as any of Pixar's movies, Star Wars and Iniana Jones are released in this format, I'm buying an HD screen, for the front-room :)

I'm really liking Tiger so far too. Spotlight has been amazing at pulling up exactly what I was looking for in the top results. I've tried Launchbar and those other similar apps, but for some reason none of them seemed this easy or accurate. One of the coolest random features I've heard about is this: if you hold your cursor over a word (in Safari for example) and hit Cmd-Ctl-D, it pops up a dictionary definition for the word.

Dashboard looks great, but it needs a little work (or additions from 3rd-party developers). The widgets don't update until you call them up, so there's a slight pause while they load up-to-date content, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of being able to pop them up for a quick reference. As a longtime Konfabulator user, I also like having a couple widgets on my desktop, and Dashboard doesn't really do this (except through what appears to be a bug -- word is an app will be released soon to do it properly). So for now I have both Dashboard and Konfabulator running, which is probably wasting a lot more CPU cycles than necessary just so I can get a clock on my desktop.

Overall I'm very pleased with the update. I just got a job out of town for the summer, so I'm glad my Powerbook has a shiny new OS (and a clean install) to begin work with. Panther was released two days before I went on tour and like a total geek I had to install it, despite the dangers of losing everything related to the show and/or leaving town and then having something go horribly wrong. Everything was fine, but I'm really glad Tiger came out early so I have a month to make sure everything is installed and working.

That dictionary feature is freaking aweseom. Thanks!!! :) That's exremely usefull for me. Cool, you can hold it down and move the cursor around. :)

I would also like to have a couple of widgets on my desk, but being able to zoom them in with a key press is a good trade off for me. One thing about Dashboard, is that it only makes the call right when you start it, so other than that, a majority of the widgets use 0% CPU power. I remember them speaking of this while watching the ADC session on Widgets. Apple could probably offer a prefference that keeps it up to date even when off the screen. I can't imagine a simple check being more demanding than playing an audio file, but a preference would allow peeps like me to kill it when encoding or rendering.

I just need to install Painter 9 and Office (Would rather not install this one.) today. So besides FCP3, I'll be all set. Then I have a majority of apps left to install on my PB.

If you have a Core capable graphic card, check out the CoreFUn app that comes with XCode2. Now that my Mac can perform practically all Photoshop filters in real time, and the rest with some custom plug-ins for CG. I hope Adobe supports this feature.

I would use Tiger if it was as compatible to everything as Windows is.

Hey Jack, do you have some sort of AIM/MSN/Yahoo Instant Messaging client? I'm working on a few widgets, but I won't be buying tiger until at least 10.4.2. I could really appreciate your help.

Just a note -- that widget-on-your-desktop app was released today. It's called Amnesty Widget Browser. It seems to work OK, but I haven't found a Dashboard clock I like yet, so I'm not using it.

I sen ye a PM. By Tiger now, it's worth it. :) I saw some benchmarks that show a 47% increase in speed for the GUI, even on an old G4 cube.

If you e-mail me widgets, I'm going to pick your brain in return, since I'm also intersted in making some.

There's a feature in it that points to the RSS graphic development toolkit. So you can see how Apple made there screen saver thtat pulls in news from any choice of RSS sites. I recall there being a blurb that stated everything is built in to make your own screen savers, so I'm going to tinker with it later today.

This ones a little buggy on my G5. It causes the pinwheel to popup, where as the 2 other variations that I tried didn't effect my performance in a noticeable way when playing a screen saver in background. I'll try to find the first one again, since the second one was a bit buggy also. But they ran great even on my G4.

I see.

Someone told me that unfortunantely they had issues with more than one feed being able to show up though. So who knows.

Ayi! I had to RESORT all of my 1500 images on my PC on iPhoto. What a pain in the butt that was. At least I can put the sony laptop away now, and get everything nice and clean over here.

Just flashed my so-called-Apple-crippled-Pioneer 117D drive to what it truly is, a Pioneer 108 Dual-Layer burner. So far it works great under Tiger. I even burned an 8x rated Memorex disc at 16X . :D

So I go to my university bookstore as someone told me they had some copies of Tiger. Well, thinking that it could be worth the look to see if there was an ok deal, I go to the software section and ask the guy.

"How much are you selling Tiger for?"

"70 bucks."

" ... I'll take it!"

I now sit here ready to install my new copy of Tiger. I'll let people know how it goes.

God bless university discounts.

Waffles.

I made my first Widget. :)

It's really bad and only consists of a simple style sheet, things I learned eons ago. :)

Anyone with newer rev powerbook might want to check out the battery recall that was put out yesterday. goto http://depot.info.apple.com/batteryexchange to check if your battery needs a replacing. Remember, both the powerbook and the powerbook battery numbers need to match up for there to be a possible problem and eligible for a recall. My battery is one that needs replacin, so it looks like I'll get a new battery soon.
