Hi all
I'd like to develop a shareware/freeware title for the Palm platform, but for every idea I can think of there seems to be an application already written!
If you have any suggestions, please post them.
thanks

Well, its certainly not bad that everything has already been taken, but if I think of something, I will post it. The last time I posted a serious program suggestion, Sharky had it done within an hour. Now can you beat that?

I'd like to be able to perform a soft reset via a hardware button, even if the program has crashed or hung. Yeah, I know that Crash does it, but most times, it takes a long time for Crash to detect that an app has crashed before it resets and I'm left with the Crash logo until it does reset. I'd like to be able to map one of my hardware buttons or even the 5 way navigator (D-pad) so that if I press on the button that it will immediately do a soft reset. Or, even if I tap on the icons in the graffiti area. I just want something that will do a soft reset when I want, especially if something has crashed and usually won't respond to taps or button presses. There are some soft reset programs out there but you have to launch it first before you can do the soft reset. I want to be able to launch it immediately whenever I want, especially when a crash occurs. Maybe there is something out there that does it, but I can't find it.
This saves having to get something to poke the reset hole at the back or open up the slider, or worst yet, for those Treo 650 owners, remove the battery and then poke the reset hole. I don't mind losing a hardware button just for this function.
Thanks.

No one has developed a freeware unzipping/zipping program for the PalmOS. All it would have to do is to be able to extract files out of .zip archives (and maybe be able to create one, if this feature is widely requested.) This would allow people to download Palm programs while they're browsing the web wirelessly, unzip the archive that they usually come in, and put them right on their Palm.
IIRC the .zip would have to reside on an external card (SD/MS) and it could be extracted to a /PALM/UNZIPPED/programname/ folder. This could be vey useful.
I don't know how hard it would be to create something like this because I really don't have an idea about how complicated the compressing method is. Good luck if you try to take this idea. :)

clie files(that came with any clie newer then the NX73) does open zip files, so if I you want a free archieve program for palm OS to be useful for both palmOne and clies, the ability to create zip files would be very good :)
A weather plugin for appshelf would also be good(best if it gets data from the wether channel, which gives forecasts for the whole world) Although the documentations of appshelf is hard to understand(unless you and read japanese)...

Ha,you don't have any ideas?Ok,how about these ones:
1.I cannot send sms through BT with my TH55 and Nokia 6230 due to Nokia's bt security policy.Would love to have a driver for this one.
2.RAR-RAR-RAR!.
I remember many people here complaining about no unrar utility on the PalmOS scene.
3.Full support of the greek language.
Right now there's only the localization method from Piloc but it doesn't cover many things. For example beaming/recieving contacts, greek characters in sms...Greece.Cyprous&many greek-americans would adore you!If it seems hard take a look into BeamMobile (http://homepage.mac.com/alvinmok/beammobile/) as a base to develop something bigger!
4.A true contacts sync utility with your mobile phone.
FunBook is simply obsolete-it does not support multiple fields which almost every phone has...
5.A search utility of the memory card.
There are many apps that search the ram,(FindHack,MemoryScanner,FindWiz...),but none that search the memory card.
For each and everyone of these,(except no1 that I can't possibly know-maybe there's already a solution and I don't know about it),is a project that I've heard people asking about. All of them are projects that cover needs that will expand in the future. So don't tell me that we're out of ideas cause I have more than couple of projects to keep a small software company occupied.
Btw if another developer wants to step into this he's more than welcome!

...Yeah, I know that Crash does it, but most times, it takes a long time for Crash to detect that an app has crashed before it resets and I'm left with the Crash logo until it does reset... If you buy CrashPro, you can customize the time 'til reset. like, say 2 seconds?
"You can set the timeout until the automatic reset by yourself. In Crash you are stuck at 10 seconds - with Crash Pro you can go down (or up) to whatever you like."
I think you'll like this much better than taking up a valuable hard button.

SFTP that passes the file to a text editor and saves from the editor back to the SFTP site would be GREAT!
I'm dying to get this on my TH55.

I didnt even know this thread was still alive; but if requests are still being taken:
An advanced HTML/CSS editor with FTP/SSH client built in, not attached to another program. Would also be able to save locally to memory card for previewing/staging in web browser.
Take all the PIM programs (Calendar, Contacts, Memos, NotePad, Tasks, Email) and make ONE program that is deisgned simply (like KeySuite) but powerful enough to do some major work (like ZLauncher).
That's all I can think of on the large scale of things. In terms of small scale,I'd love to see Facer get some help in the form of more advanced plugins (I'd pay for them if they did some neat things like add tasks/appts without leaving the Today screen or showing a recent documents list from DTG that would allow you to open the 5 last docs you opened).

I'll ask for something that seems simple, but doesn't seem to be out there anywhere in a satisfying form.
I'd like a program that would let me enter a daily meditation or "deep thought" of my own choice [there ARE some that have preloaded stuff] that would reappear yearly when the app loads. Ideally, it would be linked to the alarm feature so that it would pop-up the daily reading when I first turn on the unit for the day.
I want to be able to input "thoughts" for any future day anytime during the calendar year.
More ideas, ask.

I'd love to see a small week view program which shows details of appointments and tasks (like weekview or agendus or myweek) to simply replace the lame week view in the built in PIM. It should just pop up when the week veiw in the built in PIM is selected. weeklyplanner does that but it is not stable nor is it freeware.

I was going to ask for something similar to this-- I want an app that lets me enter a quote or text, and shows one randomly each day (like Cheechwhiz says, the ability to enter my own quotes is key-- I have this info in a database, but it would be nice to have it display one per day).

I need a very simple program to let me schedule a voice recording. For example, I want my Tungsten T3 to start recording a voice memo today at 7pm and end recording at 8pm. Is there already such a program? Can anyone do it?
Thanx

I obviously don't use my Treo enough! thanks for all the suggestions guys (keep them coming if you have more). I'll research these ideas and hopefully get started on one or more of them. I'll keep you posted.
