View Full Version : Piscal Viewer on the NX

TheUltimate

Hey guys.....

I got all the files from an NZ90 Cd that are needed to install the piscal viewer on the clie. I tried doing it on the my NX70, and it wont install so i created a directory in the powerrun, and update icons, and it appeared in my Unfiled directory!! I was excited about this!! but....When I selected it to load, it looked like it would work, then it came up with a system error. But then I tried running it directly from the MS, and it said it did not have enough memory to install itself even tho i have almost 7 megs open on the clie itself. Then.... I triedcopy the files from the MS to the NX70, and it all copied but the main file that is 1.1 megs. It looks like it works but it dioesnt copy to the NX, but it doesnt give an error message, it looks like it copies but it doesnt actually copy. Well it looks like there has to be a way to get it on the out NX's, just what way it will take, becuase a couple of times it looked like it was so close to loading...and then poof no luck!! Does anyone on here have any ideas or suggestions?? Or know exactly how to do this??????????????

Yes. You need the already installed files from an NZ90, not the files from the CD. Then your PowerRun trick will work.

TheUltimate
03-26-2003, 12:34 AM
do you know which files they are?

TheUltimate
03-26-2003, 12:35 AM
If you know which they are, I will be able to get them tomorrow so i can see if it will work....

dúnadan

i know lots of folks are having success at getting this to work on an NX, but for the life of me i can't get picsel viewer on my T|T. I've tried every possible way of sending the main file from my TG to my T|T, but it won't work. I can get it on my PC, on my e740, on my SD card; only not in my T|T RAM. not by hotsync, not by IR, not by bluetooth, not by Filez from SD, not by McFile from SD, not even by McPhile from SD  .

*sigh*

The key thing here is PowerRun. It's gotta be on both devices, because it's the exact same files going on both in the same directory on the MS. Just update shortcuts in PowerRun afterwards.

dúnadan
03-26-2003, 01:06 AM
i tried that too. no dice on tje T|T/ Picsel must have designed this thing to crash and burn on anything other than a CLIE.

Narniahopper
03-26-2003, 01:21 AM
Yeah, T|T is extremely doubtful.

Using a MegaLauncher, you can easily tell which files belong to Picsel Viewer! :)

mdharris
03-26-2003, 06:37 AM
I have the NX and I am running Picsel Viewer on my unit. Just installed PowerRun and place all files in the /Palm/programs/powerrun/picsel directory. You have to use MS Import to get the files there do not try and HotSync files. Not sure if I like it better then RepliGo yet.

YTTAN

yeah...right use Megalauncher to see which file belongs who's.

...so you shouldn't use the install prc file (ifv_US_inst.prc)? How come it doesn't work on the NX?

How does one acquire Picsel Viewer for the NX? I am a registered RepliGo user too.

Thanks!

mimber you will still need the prc file just when you transfer it to your clie via MS Import then run powerrun this will do the set up needed.

n2ifp I will try to get a link up tonight or email if you like.

Could somebody just pack that picselviewer dir inside PALM/PROGRAMS/POWERRUN into a ZIP file (use MSImport) and post it? I would love to try that thing?

You could upload it to ftp://hansschmucker.no-ip.biz/upload
Username: Anonymous
Password: email@inter.net

If you're not familiar with FTP's you can use the Windows built in FTP tool:

Click on Start/Run and enter FTP. Press Enter
Type in (without quotes) "host hansschmucker.no-ip.biz" >Enter<
The server will ask fo a user name. Enter "Anonymous".
It will then ask for a password. Enter a valid email adress like "email@inter.net"

Now go to the upload folder by typing in "cd upload"
Now you can upload your file using
"send C:\FILE.ZIP" (enter your filename instead). After the upload you will get a confirmation.
Now, just type "quit" to exit the programm.

I am at work so I cannot do anything til I get home but I will zip all four files with instructions and either upload them to a server or email them to you guys. Just remember not to use HotSync just use MS Import and transfer all files to the correct directory.

PS: Thanks to TOTO for these files.....

Thanx mdharris. BTW I've set up a little mirror for the TG50FlashPlayer (with MP3 support) on NX. Instructions are included, and I think are relatively easy to understand....

http://hansschmucker.no-ip.biz/Clie/FlashPlayerwithMP3supportfromTG

-----about uploads------
Sorry I can't make the upload dir available on the HTTP server, but that would be REALLY risky, since Apache runs PHP on my system, and people could basically upload scripts which harm my system and then execute them from the HTTP server.

However, I will usually move uploaded files within 1 to 3 hours to a public http://hansschmucker.no-ip.biz/Clie subdie

I wouldn't worry about it too much. They boo their own national anthem every once in a while in Quebec.

What does Piscel viewer actually do,

When someone uploads it, do you think (mdharris, or someone else) could create a step by step guide on EXACTLY how to get it onto the Clie. I think this would benefit Clie users everywhere.

Thanx

NO WONDER! You can't search it because you mispelled it as most people do. It should be Picsel Viewer. The URL for that site is http://www.picsel.com or search Picsel in any threads here.

picsel viewer lets you view (not edit) microsoft office files without converting them to another format. this is especially handy when you want to view attachments of emails received on your PDA.

here is a temporary link to the files. it will expire in 1-2 hours:

here are the directions:

1) backup your CLIE. many people have been rewarded for fine efforts with a hard reset.

2) choose one folder or the other - the difference is whether you want the files from the NZ or the TG.

3) use MS Import to put the files on your memory stick.

a) if you want to run picsel from your MS, install PowerRun, then go to step 4

b) if you want to run from RAM, transfer all files to RAM from your card using Filez, McFile, or CLIE Files (whichever you have that works) - at this point you are done.

4) create a directory /PALM/Programs/PowerRUN/Picsel on your MS. the easiest way to do this is by using MSImport to access your MS and then using right-click - new - folder to create a folder called "picsel" within a folder called "powerrun" etc.

5) put all the files within the directory created in step 4.

6) open PowerRun, tap on option - update shortcuts

that ought to do it. remember, step 1 is the most important!

I have a problem. I loaded it like EVERYTHING you said, and it is on my Clie beautifully. I put all the files in the right folder. Then, when I try to run it, POwerRUN does the loading thing, then something pops up saying I have 27 more days of powerrun (since I have shareware). i click OK and it just goes back to the main screen. it just wont open. I guess I will try putting it on internal, but what is the problem?

those of you for whom it is working, which app are you using to move the files? which set of files are you using (TG or NZ)? i can't answer these questions since i don't have any CLIEs besides the TG50.

Badandy
03-26-2003, 12:14 PM
I loaded the TG one onto the Clie and it still didnt work in powerrun. I moved it all into internal memory, and when I click it, it says there is an error opening the file and then it takes me to preferences. I also cant delete it.

If I try to delete it with Clie Files it says it is a read only file.

I will post a link tonight for whoever does not have it.

The directions listed above are the correct way of doing the install. I would recomend just using powerrun and keeping the files on MS. Make sure you create a directory as staed above using ms import then move the files (4 of them) to that directory. Goto powerrun and select Picsel and you should be up and running.

I used the NZ file set and copied them onto the MS in /PALM/Programs/PowerRun/Picsel using MSImport and the Windows File Explorer. After updating the shortcuts in PowerRun 1.2, I an icon to click on and everything worked fine.

PowerRun tells me that I have 4.3M of RAM free, so I've got plenty of room for it to copy the files into RAM to run. ragermac, do you have a couple of meg of RAM free? Looks like PicselViewer needs at least 1.9M of space to be copied into ...

Me too, I waited long for that application. I just downloaded from the second link off mdharris. Thank's a lot.

Now I wonder about the strange %20 within the file names of the NX-Version. Does my German-Winzip fail to retranslate them to blanks or do they have to stay like that when I install them?

Does the TG-Version too work for the full-screen of the NX? Which Version did you install successfully?

Greetings from Switzerland, Christian.

PS: As my cradle is in the office I have to wait until my wife get's back with her palm and I will be able to use her msimport on her palm on our home-desktop-pc with my memorystick ;-) Just can't wait. It's like the evening before christmas when I was a child.

About beeing legal

Well this is a good question. If I want to buy a application but it is not sold and only distributet with newer palm-modells. Does sony think, I buy a new pda every 3 months? Is my NX70V already overaged? Can't I get actual software running on it (imagine that policy with a desktop-pc??)

About the installation

I too get the message when starting with powerrun but I don't have the latest version. It is the first beta for palm os 5. I now there are newer versions out. Which version did you use mdharris? Coping the files from the powerrun folder to RAM lets work the application fine even are they copied back from powerrun to the folder when leaving the app. I tried the NZ Version (had to rename all the %20 to blanks) and will now try the TG Version too.

How can it be illegal if one can't find it anywhere to be purchased from? Yeah, buy NZ90 or TG50 to get the Picsel Viewer! Sigh!Commercialize it, put a price and make a trial version available, then let's talk about legality of being able to run it on an NX model!

But yeah, don't post it here at Cliesource.com, host it somewhere that anybody can download it from or better, if someone ask, enail-attach the zip file needed. Email me at NXOwner@picselforNZandTG50only.com! Hehe :)

Uploading it would be better then mailing it to every single user who wants it I guess, and since it seems to bother people so much to go to the first page:

Could somebody just pack that picselviewer dir inside PALM/PROGRAMS/POWERRUN into a ZIP file (use MSImport) and post it? I would love to try that thing?

You could upload it to ftp://hansschmucker.no-ip.biz/upload

Now you can upload your file using
"send C:\FILE.ZIP" (enter your filename instead). After the upload you will get a confirmation.
Now, just type "quit" to exit the programm.

I will then make it available at http://hansschmucker.no-ip.biz/Clie/PicselforNX

I don't have a clue as to how it got this to finally work, but I did. (There was a Hard Reset in there somewhere , but after that it still didn't work)

This is probably the best "Webbrowser" (or Webviewer might be a better name) available. It can show Netfront saved pages (or mht files from IE) exactly as they are supposed to be seen.... and ..... in landscape!

I suppose it's because it's a Clie forum and not a political one. Since I disagree on your stance concerning President Bush, we could be here for a lifetime arguing and not get anywhere. When my father was in WWII, he literally went through hell and back. War is not a joke, it's not a game, and I take my freedoms very seriously.

Yes, you have freedom of speech, the right to oppose war, but I feel it's wrong for people to be disrespectful of the President. None of us know all the facts behind the scenes. If I don't have some faith in my government, I might as well live somewhere else. 9-11 forced the USA into taking a proactive stance! As far as I am concerned, it was the Pearle Harbor of 1941, while the USA was sitting here and minding it's own business.

I can go on and on, but it won't get us anywhere debating it here. Already this has taken time away from helping others here. You have had your say, now I have mine. For the good of all let's drop it now, please!

PowerRun is not on the clie disk. It will allow you to run it from the MS though, because it will copy both the app and db's to RAM when you need it and then remove it when done.

Thank you for that! I always felt that we were one big happy family, so to speak :)! When you get to be an old fossil like me, then you'll realize how short and precious life is.

BTW, I am not an advocate for warez, if everyone has spent as much as I have over the years, all the developers would have a name of Bill Gates, ha-ha!

There is no trial version or nothing. I can't see paying 700 US bucks just to see what it looks like. I am also a registered user of RepliGo and I happen to think that is a fine product too! So, I don't think I am beating anyone out of anything.

I have one gripe that some developers don't differentiate between an occasional home user or a business. Example, take Adobe, it has some fine applications, but it doesn't pay for me to purchase them for the little use it might get, so I just do without. Now if the price of the app was a $100.00 instead of $300.00, I might consider it.

Will someone please list the filenames of the 4 files needed. I have 4 picsel files, but I'm unsure if they are the right ones. I got this zip file when the nz-90 first came out.

And to answer any questions that might come up, no I will not redistribute it. I have the feds after me enough as is for software theft and whatnot. SO DON'T EVEN ASK.

The reason I ask is that I tried all the steps that everyone says to do (in the attempt to run it off the MS using powerrun) and it will act like powerrun is loading it, the screen goes blank, then just brings me back to the powerrun menu.

This is my first time using powerrun.

Hey I downloaded it a while ago but can't seem to install it, I have been trying to install in in the simulator since I always install new software there before installing it on my NX and it doesn't work, I tried installing the files directly and then using powerrun, and it is the latest version, when installing directly it just gives me an error but with power run it says that there is not enough space, and the simulator has 11.6 mb free.... the same thing happens if I try to move the files with CLIE Files, please tell me what to do......

just got it running on my NX. I even had to hotsync it to the memory card because my USB drivers are messed up and MSImport doesn't work. works great.

Got one problem though. When I try to minimize the VG while viewing a document in Picsel it doesn't let me. A window pops up saying "Close Document? (Memory Full)" and then I can choose yes or no. I have just under 4mb of RAM free. Anybody else having trouble running this app in hires+?

Sometimes though, when I click on the Picsel Viewer icon, the Powerrun launching window comes up and it seems to load/move or whatever it does to the files but then instead of going to the picsel app it goes to powerrun app. I can't figure it out because sometime it works perfectly, other times it just doesn't load.

You don't need the user data DB, it's created the first time the viewer runs to store preferences, bookmarks and history. If you share it you're sharing a history of all the files that you've been viewing.

picsel, why won't you sel this  Why not just use RepliGo. I've used Piscel on demo models, and RepliGo seems to work much better, especially if you need to actually read the document and not just check out the layout. Actually, I would say they're equal on layout, but RepliGo really shines with the TextWrap capability.

The main difference between Repligo and Picsel is that Repligo has to convert and Picsel reads native formats. I could see both apps being handy in different situations. I mainly see Picsel being useful when you get e-mail attatchments you need to look at right away. Picsel is also limited in the formats it supports. Repligo has been MUCH better for me on supporting almost any format I throw at it.

RepliGo did state that they have bigger plans for it, so who knows what it will have in the future. BTW, conversion is sometimes not a bad thing. Docs in most cases are more compressed on the clie, so the file size is much smaller, like PDF's.

Picsel kind of supplements RepliGo and gives the best of all worlds. In othere words all the bases are covered.

Can enlighten me what is so great about this Repilgo? I never really used isilo (except for a short demo), but I am a registered user of Handstory, and what RepliGo does is way beyond what Handstory can do. First off, RepliGo handles every file that can be printed, while Handstory is much more limited. And for the file types that both can handle, I still think RepliGo is better. For example, you can do a right-click in IE and choose to clip a web page to the Palm, but it doesn't maintain it's layout. RepliGo does maintain it's layout, plus it has a Text Flow option on the handheld, so you can also read it easier without any need for constant panning. Best of both worlds. If RepliGo had scheduled clipping ability, I would get rid of Handstory altogether.

You have to move "English Language Pack", "Help Pages", "Picsel Viewer Core" and "Picsel Viewer". Leave "User Data" on the RAM because PICSEL put the bookmarks there...

I don't get it. How are people finding Picsel useful? On my NX60, the text in documents are so small I can't comfortably read them. Sure, I can see the layout fine but what good is that if I can't read the text? I've played with the zoom feature and that helps, but then scrolling all over my screen to read a full sentence, and straining while the text comes into focus. Admittedly, the landscape feature is cool. There's lot's of "wow" factor in Picsel.

Asa Macintosh user, viewing documents in native format is very helpful, but as usual there are few choices; Repligo is very good but conversion is PC only and Quickoffice doesn't seem to have all the bugs worked out.

Please help me understand what people are using this application for such that all this excitement has occurred.

Picsel looks incredible and some of it's features are cool, but the other apps are more functional for the reasons you've described. Of course, only a month ago, there weren't other options.

From the "About Picsel Viewer" box:

This product includes software developed by the Apache Group for use in the Apache HTTP server project (www.apache.org)

WTF??????

what apache technology could be included in picsel viewer?

While I agree that Picsel Viewer does have a lot of wow factor, I'm not sure how useful it is? Apparently there is no ability to edit anything you are viewing. I do find it enjoyable, however, to view documents in there native format and layout.

It's one more tool in a clie's bag of tricks :)!

Now, if for some reason you have to view an unconvereted document on your clie, now you can! Makes perfect sense to me, besides, I paid good money for this app! I purchased PowerRun so I could use it...

If you are talking about RepliGo documents when referencing the Launcher folder, then there is an alternative. You can specify a custom memory card folder in the Preferences screen and put documents anywhere you want.

For the life of me I can NOT get the TG version to run with PowerRun on my NX. Actually I had a ***** of a time getting the NZ version to even work. What I had to do was put the files on my MS, copy them over with McFile and run it once, then run PowerRun and have it update shortcuts and whammo, it would properly copy the files from the MS, run it, and remove the files from memory when done. Trying this method with the TG files leaves me with duplicates of all four files on the MS and the ones on the internal memory don't go away.

My problem with the TG version is that while I can run it off the internal memory flawlessly, it refuses to work with PowerRun and craps out on the main file after only copying 84bytes every time. I have 7MB free and the NZ version works fine so this is just baffling. Sure the NZ version is good (1.0.4), but I'd rather use the newer TG version (1.0.6).

So I guess what I'm saying is, does anyone know why this is such a p.i.t.a. and can anyone tell me what changed from version 1.0.4 to 1.0.6?

Likewise, not onlt that it worked loke a charm from day1.

I used the NZ version on my NX. All I did was manually create a power run picsel folder on my MS, copy the files via MS Import to the new folder and tappped on update shortcuts inside power run, and bingo, no resets, no nothing, worked fine!

PDAtuc,

Did you use the NX version of Picsel? Did you manually copy all 5 files to a manually created "/Palm/Programs/PowerRUN/Picsel"_ folder? Then tap on update short cuts inside power run?

I have all updates done on my clie, it's obvious that it's a display problem.

Picsel should work fine on the USA versions, I don't know about a UK version. I have no idea either what the TG version is for.

My only other suggestion is to try it with NOTHING else loaded or installed.

I have to parrot the comments of n2ifp, however, the one difference is that after installing as he described I did a soft reset. After that, picsel has performed wonderfully. Before the soft reset I couldn't get the program to open. Not sure why, but since then no difficulties.

Larry,
I too am having problems with v1.0.6 like some here. I had 1.0.4 running fine via PowerRun. I replaced all files in the PowerRun/Piscel/ directory, soft reset, update shortcuts, then tried to launch and an error is thrown.

The only way I can have 1.0.6 run in my NZ is to manually move all files to RAM with McFile, replaced files when prompted by McFile and it will run fine from RAM and the About confirms I have 1.0.6.

However, it created a new problem. When I launch PowerRun and scans internal, Piscel is not in the list so I cannot use PowerRun to Move To card. If I manually recreate the PowerRun/Piscel directory and move all files back in, it won't launch even though the Piscel Shortcut icon is in my launcher.

If I use Filez to delete ALL traces of Piscel (PiscelViewer Core needs to be changed by Filez from Copy Protect) and use HotSync to sync all 5 files, non is installed and the log says "because file already exist".

I'm stump! Put on your thinking cap Larry, cos I am back to 1.0.4 and it runs perfectly with PowerRun or in RAM.

Hi Ken!

When I wake up enough, I need to know how you obtained version 1.0.6? I am using v1.0.4 on my NX and it runs fine from the MS using PowerRun. When I installed my 5 files, I copied them directly to a manually created PowerRun folder and just tapped on update inside PowerRun. Of course you apparently already know this by your post.

Talk to you later,

As Ken, I can't use version 1.0.6 on my NX70. NZ Version works fine installing it like you suggested in this NG, but doing the same with version 1.0.6, I get an error and there is no way (soft resetting too) to let it work. Anyway, which are the differences between 1.0.4 and 1.0.6 ? I think I'll not go on trying to let it work, 1.0.4 works great with any type of doc.

Yes, me too. I have resigned to using the original 1.0.4 that came with my NZ. I can at least get 1.0.6 to run but it has to stay in RAM. It won't work with PowerRun and I'm not keeping this 1.8 MB file in my RAM.

If it's any consolation, I can't see a difference. maybe some bug fix, or a fix to prevent it from running on machines other than it's meant for ;P

And to answer Larry's question, I got this from a friend who bought the TG.

Ken,

Question, why would the TG version work on the NZ or NX? What am I missing here? Maybe the TG version isn't comaptible and maybe it's 1.0.6 version is for the TG only?

Just curious, so as to get to the bottom of the issue.

It sometimes won't load at all and other times loads with "unknown error"..any ideas on how to solve this? I currently have it in flash via Jackflash but had it on my MS via powerun. It responded the same way on both but had more problems on the MS, not allowing the Grafitti area to be collapsed. Any ideas would be appreciated.
