This week, we cover the landmark 20th 1SRC Podcast; Russell Beattie is down on the Treo, but he's wrong. Here's why; MobileRead has a really interesting poll on the future of mobile computing. The real answer, though, is all of the above.

So Jeff, exactly how long does it take to reboot a T5? Also, if you have ever used Mac OS10, is Longhorn going to be that fast for suspend? I have never seen anything that comes out of suspend as fast as my crummy Mac. In fact, its the only thing I like about my Mac.

My T5 soft resets in 20 seconds.
I haven't seen the beta yet, but yes, one of the goals I've heard for Longhorn is that kind of "instant" wake up from suspend.

Congrats on the 20th 1SRC Podcast Jeff!
As I tend a dying cell phone I find myself listening with interest!
How cool a combo would a Palm OS Phone and a device like the TX be?
If the phone had BT that is...
I look forward to the chat!

Jeff: Your insight scares me. Your predoctions worry me about the future of our PDAs. Aren't you supposed to be on the Palm OS side, not Windows? But if palmSource can get this working with Longhorn, it will be terrific. And the cellphone hotsync thing is terrific, too. Coupled with the WAN that cellphones have, people would be addicted. And they'd probably buy 'real' handhelds to get more of the same functionality to complement their phone. Get everything syncing together and there is no more 'handhelds are doomed'. Only 'standalone cellphones are doomed'.

Exactly.
And btw, the real battle in the tablet space will be Plinux vs Longhorn on pocketable tablets.

Jeff,
I found your vision of the future of mobile computing very compelling. Especially the parts about "data addiction" and two Longhorn devices automatically synchronizing when then are in wireless range of each other. That's not to say that we'll all end up using Windows - I still believe that Palm OS is better positioned for smaller display devices that Windows is.

I'm not saying Longhorn will definitely win this space, or even that there will be a winner. Honda ain't going broke because some people prefer Toyota. And yes, Longhorn will have to adjust its UI for smaller displays, but that's exactly what Avalon, the new display engine in Longhorn is really good at: scaling and altering the display for different devices.

Oh, and I agree with you. Windows won't win this space by default. Operating systems aside, I think that the vision of what the future is going to look like is accurate. Now, were'd you say you picked up that crystal ball from?

I just finished listening to Jeff Kirvin's Podcast. It was very interesting. :)
I share his views on how a new mobile culture is being built and how people will have growing needs when it comes to easily synchronizing their life data with their desktops. His comments on how a future device will start syncing with the desktop as soon as you are in proximity of your local WiFi network was particularly interesting to me.
However, he did massacre the pronunciation of "Coup de grāce" with his "Kou duh gracie". LOL j/k.
Good job Jeff!

Well, yes, of course I know how to properly pronounce "Coup de grāce" but I should note that I was born a Texan. As our fearless leader demonstrates constantly, mispronouncing things is what we do best.
Ain't the Internets great? Good job, Jeff.

Hi Jeff,
In your next Podcast, you should talk about the new Core Player for Palm OS. It is a revolutionary freeware movie player for Palm OS and it generates a lot of interest.

I'll keep that in mind for topic fodder. I'm tempted to talk about Core, but I want to wait until it's out of alpha testing.
