Alright, here are the gadgets I could grab around my room...
From left to right:
Texas Instruments Voyage 200 PLT (One monster of a graphing calculator)
Texas Instruments TI83+ Graphing calculator (The orange thing, standard requirement for most highschool students, haven't used it since I got the V200)
Besta CD-72 (English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean dictionary; Oxford Advanced English dictionary, Cambridge encyclopedia; Mainly for the Chinese <-> English)
Sony Clie PEG-UX40 (Below it are a few memory sticks, Hagiwara Sys-Com WiFi card, and package for screen protector)
Sony Clie PEG-SJ20 (Battery is dead, so I didn't turn it on)
Samsung SGH-D410 (nifty Samsung phone with a beautiful high resolution screen, camera and nifty sliding mechanism)
You'll notice that the TG50 isn't anywhere... I sold it to a friend.
http://rcxash.ath.cx/~ashley/images/gadgets.jpg
In the background.. you'll also see a harman/kardon speaker.. a CD-R, a screw driver, a water bottle, a cellphone holder, a receiver for a wireless keyboard/mouse, a wireless 802.11b router and a 4-port USB 2.0 hub..
Also misc papers lying around, and a 10 dollar bill on the far left side of the photo...
Also saw this picture on my camera, and decided to post it too:
http://rcxash.ath.cx/~ashley/images/mp3player.jpg
The UX series makes quite the MP3 player indeed.
Oh yes, here is a picture of my computer:
http://rcxash.ath.cx/~ashley/images/blog/xindiannao/dsc00008.jpg
See, I couldn't even be bothered to buy a case for it!
....
..
Actually, here is a picture of the inside of the inside of my computer while I was building it. The picture above is of my old computer... 800 MHz Celeron.
http://rcxash.ath.cx/~ashley/images/blog/xindiannao/dsc00007.jpg
Eh... low budget is what it was.
Here are the specs:
500 watt PSU that i picked up from a reseller for $30...
Chaintech 7VIF4 motherboard...
AMD Sempron 2400+...
1x256MB DDR RAM
XFX GeForce4 MX440SE 64MB DDR (PCI :( )
40 GB Western Digital Hard disk drive; 7200 RPM
7 GB Western Digital Hard disk drive; 5400 RPM
Toshiba DVD rewriter
Liteon CD-ROM..
Thermal Take Volcano 7 (I think)
Gentoo GNU/Linux!! << The main highlight really..
2.6 series kernel..
nVidia drivers..
nltp used...
Using X.org with composite extensions enabled...
FVWM2 with various transparency patches, and a module for a version of transset that i patched myself enabling command line support (done with next to no knowledge of C!)
Also dual boots with Windows 2000 ( boo lol :p )
And.. that's that!

Haha, thanks. I should probably say that it actually is a fully functioning computer. The motherboard that I had bought (for this computer) was shot, so while waiting for an exchange, I had to setup something, and was too lazy to screw everything back into the case. I had the motherboard set to power on by the keyboard.
Only problems with it... It was too loud (cases do muffle the fan noise considerably).. and I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving it under my desk like that.

Here is mine, not much but I like it. Now some may ask this from the pic, if I have a TH55, why do I have a Treo? Well I thought it would be nice having an all in one PDA+Phone so see if it could replace the TH, at first was very happy with it, but one thing that I was begining to miss, the Hi-Res screen. Haha, my first notebook ever. Purchased it for university. A plain notebook isn't very practical for note taking.
If you ever are looking to purchase a notebook, be sure to take a look at Tablet PCs then! They are actually quite affordable now (in fact, with all the money that you've invested into your PDAs, I think you could have had a Tablet PC by now ;) ). Really the best solution out there for taking digital notes. Did you know that with proper note taking software, such as Microsoft OneNote, that your hand written notes are fully searchable?
Tablet PC, I hope Apple can make a Tablet Mac, when it comes out (if it does), add it to my list of gadgets!
Haha, now that would be cool. I personally would love to see a viable Linux tablet. What we really need is proper software to complement the features... it's really the software that makes a Tablet PC so useful. I could install Linux on it, but.. there would be no fully developed software. The most I've seen is Gournal, which isn't even as developed as the vanilla Windows Journal.

When Apple switches to Intel, people will start making hacks (if they aren't available for purchase from Apple or Microsoft) to run MacOS on a PC or vice versa.
rcxAsh
07-13-2005, 10:39 PM
This is true. However, until the right software appears for MacOS, it will just be a novelty, just like if I were to install Linux. It's all possible, but you would lose the bulk of the tablet's functionality.
I haven't been in the Mac world yet.. but I doubt that there is software that is enhanced for tablet use? I could be wrong here. But I'm just assuming this since there are no Tablet Macs. If you take a look at the Flash demos for Microsoft OneNote or Agilix GoBinder, you will see what I mean... In addition, remember that Tablet PCs run Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition. This has extra functionality as opposed to the Pro and Home additions. Certain features of tablet enabled software will not work on regular Windows XP because the pen input APIs are not present. Again, the software is developed.
But of course, since it's software, all it takes is someone to write it. Then all is good.
I would love to use Linux on this.. but there's no proper software :( :( :( Waiting for the day that some amazing open source team comes up with a viable solution...
Edit: Oh, and I wanted to link to this video:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/theshow/episode036/default.asp
It's rather long though... but if you watch it, you will see how developed Microsoft's API is. Notice how easy it is to add tablet functionality to an application. Everything is in the API. It would be quite useful if someone were able to write a comparable API for Mac/Linux... that would pave the way for software development I'd think.

When Apple switches to Intel, people will start making hacks (if they aren't available for purchase from Apple or Microsoft) to run MacOS on a PC or vice versa.
And Apple, in the typical Apple method, will make sure they do multiple hardware checks to make sure you only run it on Apple hardware. They do hardware bundling, software bundling, and any other type of bundling they can, and Microsoft gets sued for putting in a media player? Dont get me wrong, Microsoft did some things that they deserved to pay for, but this type of bundling was not one of them, and Apple did much worse.

Perhaps it's because it's their own hardware? Eg, look at our Clies. Sony bundled their own proprietary software onto them. Many of these do hardware checks to make sure that you're running a Sony Clie (hence the "Make Clie" utility).
If it's your own hardware, I wonder if it's easy to get away with it. But also, perhaps people liked Apple's software.. no need to complain. With Microsoft OTOH, I think that most people would rather use alternatives to IE or Windows Media Player.
I mean, you don't see companies like IBM, HP, Fujitsu, Sony, etc getting nailed for putting their own proprietary software onto your computer..
But ah. I see your point. Just trying to think out the sense in it if there is any...
jjesusfreak01
07-13-2005, 11:18 PM
Well, this is a little different. Apple doesnt license their OS, even though they clearly sell it separately from their devices. On handheld devices, both Microsoft and Palm license their OS to different manufacturers. As for other software like Netfront, it is separately licensed software that isnt part of the OS. You cant blame Sony for that, you have to go after Access.
I use Firefox, but have to say that on my Mac it isnt that great. FF on Mac isnt as good as IE on Windows. What I like about IE (on Windows, the Mac version is crap) is that it handles everything. All types of media, plugins, they all work on IE.
As for WMP, it has alot going for it. Compared to the closed iTunes idea, WMP has a great interface, handles many different portable devices, and last I checked, has about twenty different services for music and video besides their own that users can access from within the player. Apple gives you access to all of,....iTunes.
On another note, the devs renting systems from Apple running OSX with x86 P4s say that they are insanely fast. They say it takes 10 seconds to get to the boot screen, and runs programs alot faster than a dual 2Ghz G5 system.

Sanyo PHS J88 phone(has every important function that doesn't need a color screen :) )
Sony D-EJ885 CD walkman(dead inline remote)
Aiwa JX809 radio cassette tape recorder(still alive, including remote!!)
And my old electronic dictionaries, which I used to also use (painfully) for PIM (palm is still king in PIM):
Besta CD67(cracked clam shell hinge)
Hottech CC300(dead keyboard)
Hottech NC1020(dead screen and bettery)
And finally my "built to order" assembled PC, which enters reset loops at least twice a weak. (even after reinstalling XP) Fine, my clie is good enough :D

Aww, but that's still an amazing deal nevertheless! I don't remember how much the NR70 was at first.. but it's definately less than that lol.
Maybe keep on surfing on ebay, and you'll find an NX73v for yourself? :)
I paid $600 for my NR, and double that since I picked one up for my wife. I currently use it as a remote. :)
