Of all the many solutions on the internet to get a Tungsten E2 (and, ostensibly, T5) to work with a Motorola V551 using bluetooth to connect to Cingular GPRS, I only found one that worked. It is below:

http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/528247-1.html

Posted by: FESCSteve

1) In prefs setup a new connection -
a) Name: LAN Motorola Phone
b) Connect to: Local Network
c) Via: Bluetooth
d) Device: Motorola Phone (you will 'tap to find' your phone here)
e) Click 'Details....' and set speed to 115,200 and flow control to automatic.

2) In prefs click Network - New
a) Give it a name such as 'cingular GPRS'
b) Username:WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
c) Password: CINGULAR1
d) Connection: LAN Motorola Phone
Under 'Details':

Connection type :PPP
Idle timeout: 3 Minutes
Query DNS is checked
IP Address is checked automatic

Then click script - here is where it all gets done:

Send: AT&FX1E0V1
Send CR:
Send CR:
Send: ATDT*99***1#
Send CR:
Wait For: CONNECT
End:

(Note - *99***1# may need to be replaced with '*99#' or *99***2#', etc)

Now you should be able to click connect in network or select the correct connection under bluetooth and connect. If you have problems, shut off the V551 and the power it back on and try again. Should work.

let me know if you have any questions or if I need to explain more.

Good luck!

Steve

What is EDGE on v551 and how it affects connection speed?

EDGE is a term used to desicribe broadband/cable/DSL type speeds at which data can travel over cellular networks. If you have a phone that supports EDGE, then you are able to download pages and content faster than if not having it. EDGE is about 144k at peak speeds - 60-80k for normal speeds, versus dialup for a landline which is 53k.

How can I know if I actually use it. My pages download so so. Is there any way to check connection speed on V551?

That's great. I was thinking about the 551, but didn't want to jump on it for fear of not finding drivers.
How much extra is the EDGE costing over the normal bill?

EDGE costs the same as normal data serves as it is a term that describes the technology that brings the speed. If you are in one of Cingular's meto areas then chances are that you are running with EDGE speeds. Call you local CIngular rep to be sure that your area has it. With my T616, the phone's hardware does not supoprt EDGE, but when in an EDGE area I get much smoother operation from my connection even though speeds are still 44k-ish.

Steve,

Can you tell me what service you have with Cingular? Is it the media plan for $24.95 per month. Cingular tells me that I can't use my v551 as a modem with this plan. I would have to go to their $79.95 plan which is way to expensive. I'm currently using bluetooth with a Tmobile Motorola just fine, but my plan is running out and I hate to carry two phones.

Thanks,
Doc

Hello,

Just curious how does that scripting part works?
Does anybody know if Cingular gave that script?

Thanks.

I have applied the above settings but I keep getting a time out message. I read in another post that changing the 0(zero) in the first line of script to an o(OH!) fixes it, but that did not work for me.

The error is "ERROR:PPP timeout (0x1231)

Hello,
I also have the same problem as Cingulord. I have a Sony Clie UX50. Using *99# or *99***X# I also get the timeout error message. Using *9#, *9***X# result in the V551 attempting to connect, then result in "No Connection" message on the V551.

Is it possible to view the Cingular V551 set-up that came "out-of-the-box" to access Cingular's MEdia Net :i.e. I press an icon on the V551, screen shows "Launching Browser", then "Connecting", then the MEdia net web menu. Hoping to see what # is dialed and script.

Am I correct in assuming that initiating the V551 connection to the GPRS/EDGE network is the same whether launching the browser to connect to MEdia Net or using the V551 as a Bluetooth modem for a palm internet connection?

thanks

Amazing! When I first setup up my moto v551 with my Lifedrive it connected to the Internet fine. Then after a hard reset the settings got messed up. SO I KNOW IT WORKS! The funny thing is that I called PALM but they don't know what the settings are. Ridiculous! Even more ridiculous is that I work for Cingular and no one, I mean no one knows anything about scripts. Our tech dept thought I was joking. BUT! the original settings that come in the Life Drive are csd settings, which means it is doing a direct dial-up as opposed to a true (modern) WAP. I know all those Company numbers and the APN numbers (and every other feakin network configuration!), but the network configuration (prefs) has no where to input APN, unless it is somehow done through the script. Technology marches on.......

Try using *99***# with the user name WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and password CINGULAR1. THere is no script to my connection, and it works just fine.

Thank you all - this thread, coupled with the new Phone Link updater from Palm as of 6/15/05:

http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/phonelink.html

allowed me to link my Tungsten T2 and my v551 phone. I've been trying for six months!

I used the updated Phone Link app to create the connection to the phone, and then modified the script as outlined above, including the change to

ATDT*99***#
WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
CINGULAR1

I'm grateful for all of the help. Thanks!
