We just enabled compression on the site to have pages render faster as well as lower the bandwidth. Recently, the server was reporting an average of 1.2GB of bandwidth per day(!). We hope that it goes down at least 40%. The consequence though is increase in processor activity in our server. We are confident though that it could manage the load.
We would like to hear from you if there is indeed a significant speed in loading the pages as well as if there are problems.
Thanks.

I don't know if this is related to this new compression or not, but I'm suddenly getting a lot of empty pages. It appears to be a server-related problem, because the browser receives <html><body></body></html> tags with no content inbetween.
If I refresh, the page usually shows up, so it seems to be happening at random.

Hmm. It must be browser related. Here's the info I found about it:
Netscape 6 & 7 and Mozilla 0.9.x & 1.x
This browser uses HTTP/1.1. From Netscape 6.2 on (= Mozilla 0.9.4), it is sending the header Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate, compress;q=0.9.
Mozilla 0.9.9+ und Netscape 7.0PR1 allow the user to define the HTTP version as well as the content of this headers in its configuration; in Mozilla 1.1alpha this function is no longer visible in the preferences but can be defined in the configuration file defaults/pref/all.js (under the name network.http.accept-encoding).
Processing compressed content works if the browser has requested compressed content; otherwise it ignores the HTTP header Content-Encoding: gzip although it would be able to decompress the content.
I will try to install Mozilla when I get home.

It seemed fine yesterday, but today it has seemed much slower for me. A few times, it took over a minute after I clicked on a link for it to switch, and this is with a broadband connection.

Hi Rod,
There might be some delays when accessing the site during the x:00-ish times since the server flushes log files every hour. For the past two days, besides the faster rendering of pages, we noticed a 45% decrease in bandwidth which we thought was pretty impressive.
Thanks.

It's been really slow today at all times of the hour.

I'm running "Safari" and it loads pages faster than I.Explorer, however this is not helping on ClieSource. I noticed today that when there are about 150+ users, that page loads are about 15 seconds. Is this due to ClieSource Staff's new compression and decision to lower bandwidth?

I also experience a very noticeable slow down the entire day today. Oh well, if it helps keep this site going I can deal with it.
