Just checking to see if anyone found the difference between the WL110 and the WL100, or is it simply just that they put NZ90 on the packaging?

Thanks,
Tom

I've seen WL100 packaging with "for the NZ" on it. The Japanese page linked to in the article does not reference the forthcoming Sony "WL110". They were calling it the "WL110" because there exists a Compaq WL110 CF card, and by using the WL100 and drivers downloaded from Intel, they could use the card in a Pocket PC.

I've been thinking about this in my spare cycles ... why would Sony come out with an NX/NZ wi-fi card that supported the PPC? Is there some Micro$oft/Sony Electronics alliance I'm not aware of?

Well, Vaio computers comes to mind!! In fact, when Sony signed on for Palm OS, they were the first PC manufacturer to do that, which a lot of people thought was strange. I think CF Wifi cards are a lot more prevalent for PPC, so Sony probably just wants a piece of that market. If it's true, they're going to have to drop the price of the Wifi card a lot to compete with other manufacturers, which is hopefully good news for Clie owners too.

Nothing Sony does surprises me anymore.

Sony has received permission from the FCC to release the WL110. It's almost indistinguishable from the WL100.

FINALLY some freakin info! Well, although two lights isn't a real compelling reason to buy the WL110, one has to wonder if the Sony-made card has any other advantages when used with a Sony device(?). Ah well... Thanks for the info!

The report says the new card may only have half the range

yeah, but it also says that the reported/documented range of the WL100 was overly optimistic

In the review, it was just speculation, it's not reflected in Sony's specs, nor did the reviewer do any tests, only gave an opinion.

Bah! Details, details... I just want some info, man..it's killin'me. I reuturned my WL100 3 weeks ago and have been on a virtual Island ever since.

So, we're back to speculating on what it might be (802.11g, et al)? great >:p

If it is true that Sony makes this themselves and the old one was OEM'd from Symbol, this could just be a business decision. That is, Sony can make more money on the new one.

the new one seem to have a lower price tag as well, 130 as aposed to 150 some web sites have it listed but not in stock

The list price is almost irrelevant, since the WL100 has been going for $75 after rebate. I'd be surprised if the new one was going for less than that on the street.

I think the Brighthand article and BETTye touched upon the rationale for introducing this: The WL100 was OEM'd by Symbol and probably ended up costing too much. Those will be phased out and replaced by the Sony manufactured one. Not much difference other than that. I estimate the exact same performance. The reason for the clarification on range, I assume Sony wants to avoid any legal issues if the range was not warranted.

They use the same drivers, so if you can get the WL100 cheaper, go for it. Although that's just my opinion. It does work well.

What's the best price one can find for the WL100? rldunn says you can find it for $75 after rebate, so that means someone somewhere is selling it for $125 or so...

I got mine from amazon.com. Their price all last week (when I got mine) was $125, though they had the goofy "Can't show you the price until you add it to the cart" thing going on. Haven't checked their this week though, so maybe it's went back up. Also, Buy.com had it for $128 the past 2 weeks, so you might want to check there as well.

Update - It's even better now. Amazon has them for $118.42, so $68.42 after rebate, and they have them in stock. Buy.com still has them listed for $128, but not in stock.

I guess I'm not special or something, because I just checked Amazon and they want $149.88 for it. It says they're offering it from J&R Music World.
