I was wondering how could I do this. I am running windows xp, I have a 2400 athlon xp chip(2.0ghz) 512 of ddr-ram and it seems to bootup slower than it used to.

Start with this program TuneUp Utilities 2004. (http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/) It's simply amazing & the best of its kind, IMO, and I SWEAR by it. It contains a feature called "1-Touch Maintenance" which, when used daily as I do, will keep your WindowsXP machine running smooth as can be. ;) It also will allow you to easily control what apps run at bootup.
I also use an app called EasyCleaner (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download414.html) (Freeware) that I also swear by. Cleans your Registry & Unnecessary files, and other junk that accumulates and slows your system down over time.
I also long ago dumped the disk defragger that comes with windows in favor of better performing software. What I use personally is an app called PerfectDisk 7.0 (http://www.raxco.com/products/perfectdisk2k/), although others swear by a similar defrag app called Diskeeper v9.0 (http://www.executive.com/defrag/defrag.asp) which I have also used and recommend highly. You will not go wrong with either one of them.
There you have it. My entire lineup I personally use to keep my XP laptop BLAZING fast, just like it was when it was new. :D

As with most NT OS', the bootup times will crawl up more and more the longer it's installed.
You can help it by deleting programs from the startup sequence - A program called HijackThis! (Normally used for Spyware removal!) can make this process easier if you don't want to shell out fore stuff like Norton SystemWorks (Very overpriced, not great) or the stuff mentioned above.
Defragmenting the system is also very benficial for NT operating systems - For some odd reason, NTFS seems to be very bad at keeping file fragmentation low despite it supposedly having better resistance than FAT32.
However, I *highly* recommend getting a BETTER defragmenter than the one in XP - It's really crap and takes AGES to defragment a drive. Last time I tried it, I let it run for 2 hours on a 30GB drive and didn't get past 1%!!
Even Norton's SpeedDisk is *MUCH* faster, and can also optimise the drive - Moving files used in the boot-sequence to the front of the disk (This was really cool in Win9x - My '98 partition boots up in 3 seconds flat to the desktop (Sans BIOS delays); I haven't tried it in XP because I don't have XP ;))
Unfortunately, you can only get SpeedDisk with Norton Utilities/SystemWorks, which forces you to install a whole load of other crap. :(
For NT-kernel OS, DisKeeper has a pretty good rep, altho' I've not used it myself...

Start > Run > msconfig, go to the Startup tab, uncheck all of them. The ones you need will automatically start anyways, so don't worry about it. Then restart. That is basic, but it helps and is faster than doing anything else.
