File size is a function of color depth, number of frames, number of colors, as well as pixel dimensions. Bandwith is an excuse. I could probably make a 1 megabyte gif that is only 4x4 pixels. Besides, avatars are only limited to 20KB anyways...

if you want a bigger picture why don't you just stick it in your sig?

I guess you are right, I have tried to put an 256x192 pic into my signature...just make the thread looks very ugly...then i decided to voluntaryly removing it....
