I been waiting for somone to post any experiences they may have encountered when using their NZ.
So far for me it's been fun because people love the way this sony looks. When they ask what it is I introduce it as a CAMERA, than I take their picture and they say WOW. After they are stunned with the BIG screen of this camera I flip over the screen and they again say WOW and also NO WAY. People are just shocked when they see the NZ!
So far I have 3 friends that want to buy the NZ as soon as they save the cash. I was out this weekend at an assembly and I took pictures of some friends(21 in total) and printed the pictures the same night and gave them a copy in the morning. They loved the quality of the pictures, to me they looked as good as the kind you go and have developed. At first they though I was crazy developing them so fast. But they did not know I had my small printer in the hotel.
I use a HP Photsmart 130 and this thing is really worth the money! How about YOU any good stories?

Nothing that would 'AWE' anyone. I've taken my NZ and interfaced it with HanDBase and taken some MS-ACCESS Applications I've written and ported them over to the Palm. We have a team of 11 people, and so far... we have 3 out of 11 with NZs and NXs (2 NZ and 1NX). We will be adding a 4th Member of our team very shortly with a NZ. 2 others have Palm IV PDAs. I've also helped a fellow employee at our site.. in developing databases on his NZ with HanDBase which he can use to update MS Access. He has created web pages which can access the data real-time in MS Access. Kinda Fun!!!!!!!!!! ... Well.. Fun in a very geeky kinda way!!!!!!! LOL
I love 'playing' with the NZ .... but I use it quite heavily... and create a lot of different databases on it.
I find it kinda 'funny' in ways to see all these little applications come out on PalmGear ranging from $5.99 - $19.99 for simple things.... Grocery Lists, To Do Lists, Checkbooks.....etc.....when you can buy HanDBase for $29.95 and there are literally thousands of databases on their site which are FREE.
I've created a shopping database on my PDA for Grocery shopping... loaded with over 1000 items ... A DVD Database to track your DVD Collection... and more... and the best is they are all put out there for free to everyone. Soon I'll be getting into creating skins.... for maybe zlauncher, YiShow, Facer ... and whatever else I can think of.
If you ever wish you had a little database to track you car maintenance... count calories... get the current MLB, NFL, NBA..etc.., mix drinks.. and so much more... give it a whirl (not really advertising for them... but it is a really good database.
Only bummer, thus far, is they are 160x160 ... and don't take advantage of HiRes :(
Hopefully that will change down the road soon :)

I work in the IT support (network admin) and sometimes write support / inventory documentation. I used to take a seperate camera with me on sites to document equipment. Now I just snap it with the NZ and either email it to myself once in the office (got wireless access at home and work) or usually beam directly to my laptop with infrared. (if only AcidImage had a BEAM option from their thumbnail screen :)
Having to carry one less device and having all data/info in one place is pefect.
Another example ?
I was creating a support document for users on how to connect an APC port protector to a serial cable. Went to our storage room, picked up a pc, cable, protector, connected them, snapped a few pics, beam, paste, print DONE :)
This thing is GREAT.
If assume right from the start that this IS NOT your primary digital camera but should be used only as a utility/nice to have, then there are no issues with this battery thing... :)

the_iceman,
Try running HandBase with CodeDiver
I'm not sure if it will work with custom forms,
but on the default view (one you open your database)
CodeDiver modified Handbase so that pulling down the silkscreen you database shows on the entire screen.
I hope this helps :)

CORRECTION.
Handbase actully supports HiRez+ all on its own.
Check if you have version 3.0i

I can use the camera that attached to shoot any photo at anytime anywhere and straight away can attached the jpg files and send it out by email immediately with bluetooth - T68m.
How about that?

DKS.... it seems this may be true.... with HiRes+ with HanDBase ... however it doesn't seem (based on my current forms(screens) then can be modified over 160x160. they seem to appear in that mode with the virtual graffiti Locked.
I do see that HanDBase has changed the ListView and whatnot so you can disable the virtual graffiti area. and get more 'real-estate'. ...... need to get more real-estate on my forms :)
I don't think they have addressed the Databases on MS to sync with the Desktop ...... One of these days, hopefully, they will :)

I have to admit that the software is nice, I have tried handbase in a pocket pc but had a hard time with it. I like that fact that we can take pictures at ANY time and print, email! I forgot to mention the first time I took a picture and emailed it to myself. Took 3 minutes and when I got home it was there for viewing. There are so many nice things one can with this unit that I'm glad I now use palm instead of a pocket pc.
I still like ny ipaq and miss the games they have for it. So far I have only found gameas wiht really cheap graphics and sound for the palm. Does anyone know of some nice games like the pocket pc games with good graphics and sound?
Example, on the ipaq I can play defender with the great graphics and the sounds are the same as the original arcade. But the same game on a palm has good graphics but the sound is"chirp chirp" when I fire or move.
I really hope there are games that meet or beat pocket pc. If not I hope it will be so soon.

George,
Have you tried out www.popcap.com?
Not old arcade games there... things like Bejeweled, MummyMaze... and a lot more for the PalmOS. They have a bundle-package... 5 games (Bejeweled, MummyMaze, Atomica, Alchemy, Seven Seas) for something like $29.95 ..... (free to try of course) :) . Give that pack a download... and see if you like it :)

is the camera on the NZ better than the one on the NX and if so, how in pixel and zoom?
the_iceman
03-25-2003, 04:41 PM
Markmac,
Check out other posts... but YES ... the camera is better. the NX's camera does pics at 640x480. The Camera for the NZ does pictures at the following Resolutions:
1600x1200
1600x1072(3:2)
1280x960
800x600
640x480
320x480
320x240
The NX Model doesn't have 'zooming' capabilities.
The NZ can have up to a 2x Digital Zoom.
The Following Modes can have a 2x Digital Zoom:
800x600
640x480
320x480
320x240
The Following Modes do not offer any Zooming:
1600x1200
1600x1072(3:2)
1280x960

Actually, the NX can zoom 2x. However, we are talkin about digital zoom, which if fairly useless.

that's the same with the NZ. no optical zoom, just digital.

I am a nurse in a busy family practice office. I have about 15 nursing applications that I use every day at work. I also have BugMe so that I can set alarms for different things like taking blood out of spinner, checking allergy injections, etc. I also use it to write quick notes. (It is like those sticky notes.) Tonight, at home, I was watching the Celine Dion special, stood up close to the TV and recorded 3 of her songs. Turned out pretty good.

dorianne,
What you said about recording from the tv is true it does sound good. I had the bugme program for the pocket pc and loved it! I have not yet tried it on my sony, thanks for the reminder. I agree with you that bugme is a very nice program because it's really easy to write down a TO DO with ALARM.

Why do you say fairly useless? I think it is quite useful, being that after the picture is taken it shows up nice and clear.

Being in the infosec biz, when some of the employees gazed at it, they were impressed and proceeded to scan it while connected to a WiFi AP; needless to say Sony never contemplated how exploitable the device and OS5 is.
No, I am not going to publish our findings, but, be wary when connected on a public IP(versus NAT) to the net and netfront is exploitable..
See ya

I'm a computer engineer, working in the mobile business, and of course, a heavy user.
I just upgraded my NR to the NZ, and I'm happy about it, regardless of the fact that the new OS5 is not 100% back wards compatible and I loosed some applications and I miss some of my DA's, and of course, the weak battery ( where are the times where I could use my palm III for 30 days without need to recharge ) and last but not less, the size. :(
In general, the machine is faster, with great multimedia support, strong communication capabilities and nice applications.
from my point of view, the best palm in the market
:D

Thanks Iceman,
I do have some of those and I just downloaded a racing game that is really nice. The only thing now with most of these games is the sound. Palm writers needs to step this up to stay with sony equipment if you know what I mean.
My ipaq ha this game called turja with graphics and sound that will leave you breathless if you used a headphone. I really do hope that one day palm or sony can write program to match the pocket pc and that we can have the ability to use the WHOLE screen for games. Either way I really love my NZ this is just minor things.
Thanks.

There are some games which came with the CLIE (On the Install Disk) which are full-screen. AcidFreecell... TakTic ... BumpAttack, Breakout and I believe a few others. These are nice games. There are some others ... you may want to check out (not only on Sony's website.. but take a look at:
www.megasoft2000.com Several nice games there!!!!! :)

The thing that I like so much about BugMe is that I can create notes that I use all the time and save them. The new version of BugMe is really much better. There is a place you can click and all of the saved notes show, and you can click on the one you want. I have several of them for work, like blood pressure check, when to take blood out of the spinner, when to check allergy injections, Strept screen etc. I also have one for bills, and I just set the alarm for when I need to pay them. Hope you enjoy if you download it again.

The NZ90 is a stunning device and the most useful PDA I have owned. I wish I could use it for powerpoint presentations and we still need a compatible clie gear keyboard, but until then, some of the neat things I've done with it include chatting on IRC with the WiFi card plugged in, beaming my address and phone number to a potential client during a meeting (used infrared), and taking a quick snapshot of damage to a friend's car for printing a few minutes later on that ever popular portable HP printer.

I actually had a cool experience today using the camera. I needed to get papers scanned to my secretary to type them out for me, and I did not have a scanner, nor was she near a fax machine. So I photographed the papers (flash off) and emailed them to her, she printed them out, typed them up and emailed them back to me! I thought how cool that was that I have a scanner (of sorts) available to me anywhere!

I've also got in the habit, for those meetings which I run here at work, to use my NZ's camera. We have large White-boards (8ftx5ft) in many/most of our conference rooms. Instead of having someone take notes.. or I have to write everything off of the white-boards after the meeting, so it can be erased for the next group which may need the room.... I simply take pic(s) of the board... and can translate them to notes at my convenience. I've also used the recorder in the meetings (mostly playing I guess) to take notes during the meeting. This is helpful when we do technical review meetings.
Just other ways the Clie aids me in business :)
