View Full Version : ZDoom or ZQuake on UX50
Any UX users successfully installed and ran ZQuake or ZDoom? If so, how was the speed, game play, how much free RAM is needed, and how about the button configuration?

Nope, but am wondering as well...I think the lack of key binding makes those games somewhat impossible...wait for Sharky as he is working to resolve the issue.

I actually asked about this in Yoyo's forums. And apparently, a UX50 user there got it working.

There is an apparent bug also, not sure what. I didn't check that thread again until today, and didn't notice that Yoyo posted a reply.
The UX50 user there was using UDMH. I couldn't get it working though. I wonder if the updated version Yoyo talks about will fix this?

What does UDMH actually do? I don't know if its worth trying to run this game. I have 8.2 MB left in my RAM and I am skeptical about installing a software that requires a minimum of 8 MB to start. Also, how will the simultaneous key press problem affect gameplay?

DM is the memory that a program needs to run tasks, and is commonly referred to as heap memory. Heap memory is necessary for things such as emulators, that have to load huge files into the RAM from a memory card. Most Clies have around 6mb of free dynamic memory, which can vary depending on what other programs are running in the background (just small threads usually). UDMH takes some of your free RAM, and converts it into dynamic ram. It is useful if you have a device that doesnt have enough dynamic ram to run emulators, or certain programs like zdoomz. T3, T5, and some Sony Clies have alot of dynamic RAM, but most other handhelds are lacking.
Can you tell us specifically if the UX have enough DM?

It doesn't...that's why it requires UDMH app to get ZDoomZ to work.

wrong. the ux have 16mb of heap memory, which is FAR more then any palm handheld, but maybe the Zgames required UDMH to run, but not because the missing of DM.

See, this is where I get confused again. Although it was advertised as 16MB, I remember it being said that it is actually only 7MB. The other 9MB is used for something else.
If you tap your memory stick icon on the status bar and choose the handheld from the drop down list, you will see that the system memory is only some 7MB.

If you look at Cliepets post, linked to in the last post, you can see what I mean. Most programs just require regular ram to run, and a miniscule amount of system heap. Emulators, such as ZDoomZ, require you to use the system heap for the files. Look at CPs post.

I think I understand what you're saying. But I meant was that the media info dialog only reports a total of 7MB. It's rather misleading though, the OS taking up 9MB of this memory showing that..?
