Apologies for the cranky. Yay! Spring! 1SRC Chat! Mark your calendars! And let's at least try to talk about PDAs this time. Cool. Legalese behind why Graffiti 1 will stay dead. More LifeDrive info! Verizon Treo 650 and a Windows Mobile Treo sighting? Why is there a white border around Palm screens? Stay tuned... [details (http://www.1src.com/?m=show&id=968)]

Ahh the white border thing!
We had a handful of threads about that...
So far we've discovered that those elements are probably not addressible.
I suspect the border is there to make it easier to tap/drag things on the edge of the screen, but what I don't understand is why they bothered to etch the pixel elements in instead of just leaving it clear... maybe it was easier that way than leaving a band of clear substrate?
The VZ also has this border, but because it doesn't have a backlight it's a Black border ;)
I'd like to know if the older Palms have one too - Anyone got a Handspring Visor, Prism or Palm Pilot, III, Vx or even IIIc that can check...?
Syncing a folder hierarchy is possible on the T5 using Drive Mode and the Windows Briefcase function. I know this isn't as easy as it appears on the LifeDrive, but still possible to do if you really want the folder hierarchy to be synced.
This is how I've been syncing both my documents and music/podcasting folders with my desktop. Sorry I voted for cranky =P

Palm IIIC has white border. Palm V has "border", but one cannot see it.

I'm not sure that "cranky" covers it, but it is hard to argue with the truth. Once again Jeff pulls off another outstanding podcast...under the possible influence of sinus medication.

Oh, and I'll try to talk about PDAs this weekend. No, really. I'll even start my own rumor: The new Life Drive, its gonna run Windows Mobile.

So what's the address to the Russian web site with the alleged LifeDrive screenshots?

Thank you very much. I apologize for what may have seemed a silly question, but I find 1src.com to be very informative but not quite as easy to navigate as palminfocenter.com.

True, but we have fewer wingnuts.

Guilty.
Aww man, a guy asked about capture cards and I told him what I run.
This was an hour plus into the chat, so I thought things had loosened up a little.
Sorry.
I DID try to keep the PDA side of things up with Life Drive stuff, but I will strive to stay further on topic in the future.
I thought it was a cool chat nonetheless.
Mmmm LifeDrive.
Okay, I use G1 on my TH55 because I CAN. If I had been forced to learn G2 or Decuma at that point I would have.
If I have to learn it on my next device so be it. I am NOT among the whining masses on the G1 thing. I'd rather use it. It won't kill me to learn something else.
I'll be offroading in Centralia, PA this weekend, and I don't think my TH is chat compatible, so I don't think I will attend this week, although my bro might have his laptop.
EDIT
I can thank that loose ribbon cable thing for my first PalmPilotPro (free)! :)
Hope you're feeling better Jeff!

:p Capture cards are cool. I was the one that answered strider's question. I liked this Podcast. Really got me hyped for the Tungsten LifeDrive. Looks like Pa1mOne is eliminating their 320x320 devices slowly and cover them up with new Tungstens. Soon the T|E series will be replaced with a new Tungsten series. It looks soo cool. 4GB of memory is also a big improvement in the PDA department. We are in the age of high GBs and PDAs are still carrying MBs. That's pathetic. Nice setup and step up Palm. No PPC devices have 4GB :P Hopefully all goes well with this device. I hope the battery life is great seeing as nothing was said yet.

A (bunch of) word(s) about "wingnut-ery":
My main problem with PalmDaycarecenter is the inability of some to stay civil.
There are alot of differing viewpoints (and there would be more) but it's for NOTHING when it gets personal.
I've watched at least a couple of industry insiders try to hang out and offer their viewpoints only to be chased away by what amounts to petty thuggery, and that's truly a shame.
I've voiced this opinion only to be called Pollyanna! (Imagine!)
I think you're simply the "target du jour" from the looks of it, Jeff.

Tungsten LifeDrive. Exciting - and too good to be true, but I certainly hope it is :-). Thanks for informative PodCasts.

Good podcast Jeff.
Yeah you may have been cranky but it's part of life. I was cranky while listening to it so it's ok. ;)
Reason number 1 I'm not at 1src chats: I pretend to have a life. 9 p.m. ET on Saturday nights is just not in my time of being near a computer...
Was I the only one that thought Jeff sounded like Lumberg (the boss from Office Space) in his "That would be great...Thanks.." statement around 2:20 in and then again at about 3:00 in?
I miss G1, but I'm used to the fact that I'm not getting it back. I just despise G2 and Teal.

I hope not, too, Jeff. But you were dead on there. Best impression I've heard of it. Ever. :)

Within months of getting my last Clie (now a two year old NX80), I found the G1 app and 'installed' it so I could use the SILK launcher to replace G2. There is also TealScript that will allow you to use chicken scratchings for (I guess it would be denoted) GCS. So why all of the hand wringing about the move to G2? The people on this board are suppose to be the hot rodders of the PDA world. They can be Rembrandts of screen designs but can't find a Grafitti solution??? JEEEEZ.

1. I too love grafiti 1, but I know it is dead. It hasn't been put into a handheld for at least 3 years.
2. I never noticed the white border until you pointed it out, even though I often read with ereader on the 'inverted' theme.
3. As good as an HD built into the lifedrive is, I am concerned aobut the durability of it. I had an iPod, and and I dropped it and it got a nice scratch on the HD and didn't play all of my music right anymore.

The point is you CAN'T use G1 in any post-T|5 device.
Every new device that uses that crummy NVFS internal structure will not be able to use G1, and Cobolt won't be able to use it either.
Thats why whiney gits like me are popping up ;)
I'm settling down 'tho because me and my TH55 look to be in for the long-haul given the apparent direction of PDAs :(, which makes the whole argument moot.
If people can still be using Palm III's in this day and age I'm sure my TH will be able to cope - My only worry is damage, but the functionality is all there...

The bigger worry in that case would be the battery. Lithium batteries only last about three years, no matter how much or how little they're used. It's just a matter of time, and a lithium battery will conk out. The older Palms still in use used AAAs. Newer color devices won't last that long.

Change is a good thing. If you are still using a III, V, or VII series handheld, it's time to move up to a Tungsten E series or Zire.

Jeff, keep up the good work on the Podcasts. I kinda liked that whole grumpy thing you got going there - different!
Sorry I cant be at the chat a little later and hope it goes well. It'll be the wee hours of the morning in Blighty and I'll be in the land of nod.
If anyone gets around to it, I'd be interested to hear views on expected LifeDrive battery life.
Have a good one.

Hi Jeff
You said only a few Zodiac games were capable of using the whole screen and hide the status bar. Another app is MMPlayer which can use every pixel for video (on all devices except the iQue I believe).

Everyone knows G1 is gone unless Palmsource wins the Xerox lawsuit with finality or some kind of settlement is reached. The problem with most people is that post-T5 devices disable the ability to 'stealthly' enable it using older device's G1 system software. Sure, that will probably be murky legal waters for people using it but most people probably believe 'fair use' allows them to, since many people has more than one Palm device gathering dust somewhere.
If only Palm engineers didn't closed that hole, everybody will be happy. BTW, is it the hardware's (NVFS) or software's fault that killed that famous G1 workaround?

Jeff,
Verizon's preview page on the Treo 650 makes it perfectly clear that Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking (DUN) is not supported.
My church-going background prevents me from fully expressing my feelings on this issue.

-EdOur shadowy friend has that covered. Go to www.shadowmite.com
This will work unless Verizon sets their network up to block DUN.

Sorry I couldn't make it to the chat this week, but I was offroading in Centralia, PA.
Incredible time, and I wished I could have hooked up, but cell coverge is spotty due to the lack of a poulation to warrant a cell site out there.
(Pics and movies from my TH55 available upon request)
My bro runs GPS mapping software on a Panasonic Toughbook, and I tried to use my phone via a cable but it was just too spotty driving around to even get online.
Next week I'll try again. So far I'm free.
