MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.
At MMORPG.com I found the following list of popular MMORPG games:

EVE Online
The Matrix Online
City of Heroes
EverQuest II
Dark Age Of Camelot
Anarchy Online

I guess the game action makes worthwhile the necessary hardware and subscription. Also, a person may choose between console and PC Win.

Following find the restated list of popular MMORPGs, in order:

World of Warcraft
Matrix Online
EVE Online
City of Heroes
EverQuest II
Anarchy Online
Dark Age Of Camelot
Maybe groups of people together with portable gaming units with Wi-fi like PSP and Nintdo DS will offer some of the functionality of an ethernet-based MMORPG. However, the appeal of a big computer screen gives some incentive to get the powerful system needed for an ethernet-based MMORPG.

Have you played any of the Wacraft3 mods, like Planes of Fear? They aren't massive RPG games, but are great fun for a few hours every other week. Basically little mini RGP adventures, like castle sieges and defense maps. I play these games with my friends to kill a few hours. Most of my other friends are on WOW and E2 now days.

WOW will play on my system at 2560x1600. But I don't own that game game. Just don't want to afford the time it would take to build up a character. :)

I look forward to Zelda 4 Swords on DS, then I should be able to play my friends over the internet, like some of the other games being released.

I tried Sims Online and I failed. I can't hope to fare better with the other popular MMORPG. Why do they employ such steep learning curves?
I want to know more about WOW & E2.
I know a lot of fun can be had with online games. However, until I find a forgiving system, I remain devoted to ebooks.

Some of my friends and I used to play Ragnarok Online. It's an interesting 3D/2D online RPG by Gravity Games.

Although Ragnarok Online's graphics aren't really anything amazing, the nice thing about this is that you don't need a really great computer to play it. So if you don't have the latest computer with an expensive graphics card, you may still be able to play it.

Also by Gravity, you can now play R.O.S.E. Online for free. Fully 3D MMORPG. Not sure about whether or not it will turn into a pay game later? Guessing so, as all AFAIK, all of Gravity's other MMOPRGs require subscriptions.

And for completely different MMPORPG experiences, check out Hoverboard ASDF, or MapleStory.

I haven't tried them myself.. but I think that Hoverboard ASDF is a hoverboarding MMORPG (?) and I've seen MapleStory being played, it's a 2D side scrolling MMORPG.

Not sure how these rank up against heavy weights such as WoW, but they're free AFAIK and quite unique.

...Great information. I looked at the sites of MapleStory, Hoverboard and Roseon. The sites appear as super starting places for your gaming endeavors.

There's a at least 3 of us with DS's if I recall. Me you and Zac?

Chatting with a little avatar would be great, I have a feeling are little characters would just be standing around all day though. :)

Does the 11 stand for 11 hours of cut-scenes, or 11 minutes of gameplay. :D *kidding*

I don't have the resume' for FF_XI The problem of those MMORPGs with high learning curves concerns a good starting point.
However, Rose Online, Hovercraft ASDF and Ragnarok look feasible.
