Hey Everybody...
I don't want to risk damaging the "power slide" button on my UX50 and was wondering if any of you could reccomend some type of software program that will allow me to set or map one of the buttons to use as an "on / off" switch.

Try DefaultCapture. It's freeware.

this is if u use zlauncher...
try this...out of the 3 hardware buttons, select one to launch zlauncher in the prefs. this will turn thhe device on.
in the zlauncher prefs, choose the option, for the long press back button as power off.

I'm gonna give y'all a little tip...
When I am looking for an app that does a particular function, I always go to PalmGear and try several queries until I get a hit on what I am looking for.
For example: for the purposes of this thread, I queried "Power on" on PalmGear without the quotes. The returned hits included this cool app by venerable Palm app developer, Peter Easton, called, what else: Power 1.3 (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&PartnerREF=&siteid=1&prodID=46678). Peter Easton makes some great apps (BtToggle, for example) and where I haven't tried this for a while, I'm certain you will like it.

most launchers will allow you to create a shortcut for power-off.
you can power on with any of the 3 hardware buttons.

How about the free OKey for powering off? I installed it in my ux50 and check only the option "Sleep On Close" and enable it. Whenever I close the lcd, the power shut off automatically.

How can you damage the sliding button? Honestly...I think that's exagerating just a tad.

Obviously you have never owned a NX80V or you wouldn't ask that question. Horrible power-switch issues.
I also have had some issues with one of my UX50s. It sometimes goes into "Hold" when I power on with the power slide. I try to use the power slide as little as possible. I always power off using the ZLauncher function and typically power on using a hard button.

Same thing here, I had 3 UX and none had a trouble...

had to send my ux twice for repairs, everything was already replace, beside the case and the power button.
i say, keep using the pwr button, and when it stop working, try to find an alternative.

1/ Any of the 3 hard buttons can power on your unit. You can choose the application to be launched in : pref/buttons.
2/ For power Off and Lock :
-Ctrl+R = stylus stroke.
-preferences/buttons/stylus/turn off and lock.
=> Ctrl+R will turn off and lock your unit.
3/ for power (only) off : keyquick.
KeyQuick extent/ keypref/ function/ systemDef/ power OFF.
4/ power off when closed : okey
I use 1/ and 3/.

just to throw in my experiences my ux50 had to have its power switch replaced. I am really quite careful with the this guy so i was really surprised when something mechanical like that broke. Anyway i was under warranty and they replaced the battery, motherboard and power button.. must have been holiday spirit on the part of that technician as this all happened around christmas a year ago.
