Has anyone noticed the new LifeDrive pics and specs over at Palm Addict? Very cool, and a price of $549.
As always, who knows how legit this is, but the pictures look viable, and the stainless steel buttons look better than in other pix.

I am lusting this new device already!
I am planning on upgrading my Treo 600 to a 650 when Verizon decides to offer it, so I doubt I'm gonna be able to justify getting the LifeDrive as well. What a shame.
I was a little doubtful about it but these beautifully rendered images must have taken a long time to create. If it is a hoax, someone really has too much time on their hands

My thoughts exactly. Plus, when the T5 rumors were floating around, the only real evidence (except that one fuzzy photoshopped job) suggested a lesser PDA than everyone expected, which turned out to be true. Likewise, all the evidence this time around seems to point to this LifeDrive. I'm cautiously optimistic.
I'll see if I can post the new pics here...

Notice:
Voice recorder (yes!)
Orientation button (hope that's not in a spot you'd keep hitting it by accident)
Headphone jack on the bottom (that's really odd)
"Lightpipe" LED on the top (what's that?)
On-Off-Hold switch like Sony's
No camera (goes against earlier rumors)

A couple of things point towards the pictures being fakes.
1. The FileZ icon. Since when does PalmOne create publicity pictures with 3rd party apps on the screen? Never, far as I know. Are they going to bundle FileZ? Doubtful.
2. The photoshop flash reflections are, as someone on Engadget put it, 'craptacular'. Take another look.

I don't think there's any doubt those pictures are fakes. The question is - are they mockups of something real?
I dunno, but I sure hope so. Sony proved there was a market for this kind of PDA, and when they left, they left a hole. I can see P1 filling it with this.

The pics werent fakes, just highly edited for informational purposes (hence me tell you that I edited them). The original ones were good but fuzzy. Take a look below, I give the orig and the sharpened one that made the rounds around the net. Analyize and make your on conclusions from there. As far as I could tell (re: the photo properties and a few other methods), the image was real.

We're talking about the new pics, Antoine.

Yes, I meant the new ones, and that first one that was obviously also a mock-up.
It's still hard for me to get my hopes up about this. P1 giving us uber-users the device we've been yelling at Sony to give us? Seems like a dream.
If P1 is going in this direction, it would make a lot of sense for them. Simple organizers in the Zire line (with some frills in the upper Zires). Business in the Tungsten line. And entertainment in the LifeDrive line. It would be everything we wish our iPods were.
A smart move by P1 if they're doing it. The PDA as we know it has a limited future, but iPods have a huge future, and P1 may just be positioning themselves into that market.

Or could it be that palmOne is playing both sides of the market...those who want to be connected (Treo and wireless Tungstens), and those who want to groove to the rhythym of life (Zire and maybe this LD). ;)
Antoine
04-05-2005, 12:37 PM
Ah...oops. Sorry bout that, I got flak for those pics from other places for one reason or another.
The new pics are CG for info purposes. Kind of like what you would see in promo materials or on in display packaging. I'd hate to be the person caught leaking this stuff if its real.

It does appear that some of the LifeDrive pics might be fake, but that doesn't change the possibility that this device, however it might look, will be on the market soon.
With that in mind, it seems like the next generation palm devices will look very appealing. I wonder what the people at Tapwave think about this fine device.
Adrenochrome
04-05-2005, 01:57 PM
I think Tapwave is more concerned about the PSP. It's taking direct aim at their market. The LD looks more to hit the iPodders who want more than just simple PIM functions.

Exactly.
Or - people like me - PDA users who don't want to have to buy/carry an iPod in addition to their Palm.

I've been using my T2 with a 1gig card as my iPod for nearly a year now. It's great except that I've realized that I listen to about five gigs worth of music. If this LD is for real, then it, with my 1gig card, would be exactly what I want - 5G and all the Palm storage I could want.
Fingers crossed......

I heard that.
Not to mention that this Podcasting is eating up even more of my space now.
My biggest concern is that palmOne doesn't use whatever crap-tabulous amp they've got in my T5 - I can't believe the hissing that it puts out, and I've got really nice headphones. All the space in the world doesn't mean a thing if the sound quality isn't there.

I wonder whether the HDD will be 1" or 1.8". I have over 20GB of music; thus, while either would be fine, at 20GB it's looking to be a replacement of my HDD audio player.

I haven't used my Treo or my T3 as an audio device much because my 1 Gig s d card isn't nearly big enough. The LifeDrive might change that, but I doubt it.
Also, I'm not worried about the bulkyness. Maybe if I clipped it to my belt I would.

With all that this device has, why saddle it with a crappy VGA cam? Get yourself a good standalone cam that uses SD, then transfer the pics over. That's what that "Camera Companion" in the specs is for, I bet...
Antoine

I agree with Jeff. From the looks of things, if this LD is real as we suppose. It would seem that the Zire72 and Treos may be the only camera weilding models in palmOne's line. Havent heard of a Z72 replacement either. Maybe that comes in the fall release.

I think a light pipe is a long bar that lights up. like 1" long or something.

But it has a huge hard drive....I agree, and the only thing that could make it better is an integrated graphics DSP, with info available to developers on how to program for it. You could have PocketTunes running for a day strait, and as much memory as an iPod. Now that would be cool.

a built-in camera is nice for those of us who don't want to carry an extra device (ie camera) and really only need a quick camera for quick and dirty pictures every once in a blue moon. it's always nice to have the option!

Most people carry around cameraphones to take pictures, and in the future, when the devices are fully converged, they will probably have phones.

If your going to be taking "dirty" pictures with your built-in camera, maybe you shouldn't have one.

I not the type of user who would put alot of music on my Palm, if I had the space. Maybe if I had 4 Gig I might.
I have alot of ebooks, images, Tube maps, and I also have Card Export installed, so I use that to store files on there.

What I don't think some of you realize is that the tungsten models are typically regarded as business units.
There are an incredible number of businesses (and portions thereof) that restrict camera access. The company I work at, for example, doesn't allow any cameras of any kind on the premises. We can be fired for having a cameraphone or a pdacamera on site.
I for one applaud them for NOT including a camera.
Besides, you couldn't pay me to use a dinky little camera like that anyway - give me a proper SLR or don't give me a camera at all. . .

Probably not the Lifedrive, but I think their next Zire will have an improved camera. The rumoured Zire 73 while vaporware at the moment, should arrive this fall. That's my musing only and not any inside info, just wanted to clarify.

Camera Companion is a program that lets you easily transfer digital photos from an SD card to your Life Drive or from the Life Drive to your PC.

So is it real? Scott over at Tapland had an article about it dealing with Pfizer medical (Its still on the front page, i think) but someone in the discussion mentioned it was on April Fools Day. I really want to know if this device is a reality as i am either going to upgrade my PC or buy this thing... But i dont want to wait like half a year to see a real product...
