I got up this morning to see if my sony TG50 had reset to daylight savings time and the SCREEN IS not responding.

I can use the dial and use the keypad hot sync etc

I just can't get the screen to respond.

What do I do?

Try a soft reset? Hardware related problems are hard to fix. Try tapping on various parts of the screen to see if you get any response.

I did all of those and nothing.

I'm really upset over this. I've had it about 2 years and I don't even use it that much maybe 2x a week. I still have my sharp wizard and it still works had it for at least 5 years. Gosh even game boys don't do this. Sony should be ashamed of themselves.

I don't know what to tell you... Have you installed any recent programs? Try (it may be hard) to backup everything and do a hard reset. There's nothing much you can do, unless you are willing to open up the TG to figure out whats wrong with it, or perhaps send it to Sony (if your under warranty, they may repair it for you, because the screen isn't broken really...), read your warranty form carefully and call tech support to see what they can do (which isnt much) before you send it on its way.

EDIT: Unfortunately there are no TG50 screens because the TG doesn't have the VG area mainly, so you'll have to purchase a banged up TG off someone (with a working screen of course) if you want to replace it yourself. If you send it to Sony, chances are they won't have TG's in stock anymore and will send you a refurbed TJ37 or something similar for their screen asking price > $120 which in a way, is a deal.

I'm not too sure about MS Outlook syncing. Do you have a Memory Stick? MS backups are thurough.

Yes I do have a mem stick. I don't really know how to back up the whole system since I can't use the screen. The only thing I have on the MS stick a one game 128mb

I may need some help on this

Also I have a feeling the Hard reset won't do a thing. Just my thoughts

The reason to try a hard reset is because it could possibly by a software conflict. I don't have any other idea.

You shouldn't need a memory stick to replace everything after a hard reset. Your backup files are most likely in 2 places. The Palm Desktop hotsync software keeps backups of all of your programs and data files in the Sony Handheld directory. It files them under a folder called "backup," which is in a file with a name similar to your palm user ID. For example, on my computer, if my username was Joe Schmo, my backup files would be in this folder: c:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\SchmoJ\Backup

If by "i have everything backed on my computer on ms outlook," you mean that you have intellisync or Chapura linking the PIM data to Outlook, your Outlook data are in a .pst file.

When you do a hard reset and then hotsync, the Palm Desktop hotsync program should recognize that the handheld is clean, and it will try to reinstall everything from the backup directories.

Before you do that, though, I suggest backing up your backups. By that I mean take the Backup folder (or actually the entire folder with your user ID, SchmoJ in the example above) and make a copy of it somewhere. In Outlook, copy each of your PIM folders (Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Contacts) to a new file or folder. I say this because when I was playing with hard resets and an older handheld once, when I synced after a hard reset, it thought that I meant to delete all of the PIM entries, so it "synced" them by erasing everything.

After you've backed up the backups, you can try a hard reset and hotsync. If you're lucky, after the hard reset you'll have a working screen back, and then if you hotsync, it will put everything back on your handheld.

From your description, though, it sounds like you might (gulp) need a new one. Even if that's the case, backup those backups, because you might need them to put the info on a new handheld.

Is there anything at all funky with your power switch? Like is it loose or something? It almost sounds like your handheld is in "hold," which would cut the screen but maybe still keep running.

<<CAN YOU TELL THIS IS NOT SOMETHING i DO OFTEN. I CAN COPY THE WHOLE FOLDER AND SEND IT TO MY DESKTOP THIS WAY I CAN FIND IT EASY CORRECT? >>>

In Outlook, copy each of your PIM folders

<<OKAY HAVE TO LOOK FOR THAT NEXT>>

<I WILL BE SO MAD I HAVEN'T EVEN TOUCHED THE SURFACE OF WHAT THIS THING CAN DO I USE IT MOSTLY FOR DATES AND ADDRESS ABOUT ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK. I ALSO JUST REMEMBERED I HAD IT THIS WEEKEND AND IT WAS IN MY PURSE AND I DROPPED MY PURSE IT'S IN IT'S OWN LEATHER CASE BUT ONE NEVER KNOWS >

PM = Private Message which can be accessed in the header of this forum.

bkeeley, the reason I called for a MS backup is because Hotsync doesn't always save EVERYTHING. A MS backup creates an image of the RAM while HS simply syncs most programs and a few databases.

Totally agree. I've found MSBackup to be more thorough and more less hassle than other backup programs, like backup buddy. I misread her original post and thought she had a totally blank screen, in which case, I figured doing a backup blind might be tough. Sounds like she could still do a hotsync, though, which is why I suggested that.

LK, before you try a hard reset, you might want to try to reset your digitizer. (This is the part of the pda that "reads" your screen taps.) See if you can (using the keyboard and jog dial) navigate to the Preferences screen. Choose Digitizer. You should get the set of crosshairs that you did when you turned it on for the very first time. Maybe that will work.

And try a backup with MSBackup as well as backing up your files on your computer.

Good luck!

(fingers crossed)

no O can't digitize
I can use the keypad and jog dial but the screen won't work so I can;t digitize

I just want to thank everyone for helping me with this problem.

I did the hard reset and it didn't work. Now I have nothing

I'm wondering is it work having it fixed. IT cost $138.00 just to send it to sony and IF it's a tier one repair that's what it will cost.

Any thoughts

IF I get a new PDA any thoughts on which kind I'm just so disgusted with sony that I don't know if I want to give them any more money.

Thak again KAtherine
It' still would be cheaper to fix it then get a new one. But who knows how long that will last.
