View Full Version : QUICK NEWS: If you don't use it - you should!

I get most of my news when I'm traveling (which is often) via rss or Really Simple Syndication. Quick News is an rss client that intalls on the handheld and enables you to define and wirelessly download only the news that appeals to you. I also run a macro (via MacroPlay) each morning and it updates automagically each day. For a detailed description, go HERE (http://standalone.com/palmos/quick_news/).
Here's a small collection of screenshots (on a green background) of the feeds that I like to watch. The numbers to the right of the shots represent how many new articles there are as well as how many I've read:

I really like this app too. I just wish it would work on Internal Media. It dumps all the feeds into my RAM.

I run it from the stick. I moved it with PowerRUN. Works like a charm.
Also, in the Preferences/Downloads, it gives you the option to select which card to run it from.

Thanks. I'll give it a try.
I tried moving it with ZLauncher and two icons appeared. It's time to try it with PowerRun.

By the way...
If you are considering upgrading from 1.04 or 1.05 to 1.06 AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO RETAIN YOUR FEEDS, don't upgrade. I just migrated to 1.06 and where all of my user-defined feeds seem to load, they don't and I am currently, and laboriously, re-keying them as we speak.
Dammit Standalone!!

Yeah, give it a go. My problems may have been rooted elsewhere...
However, I just reverted to 1.04 because it was stable. (And because it takes a long time to manually reload all of my favorite feeds.)

This is very cool!!
You can define your own rss feeds HERE!! (http://news.yahoo.com/rss/)
Scroll down on this page to where it says: Create your own RSS news feeds and then type in whatever you want: beer, ale, microbreweries, barleywine - whatever you want to receive daily news on and whenever your word is 'IN THE NEWS' you will receive that as part of your user-defined rss feed!!!
Cool stuff!!

This may be a stupid question, I'm an RSS novice....
...but when I install Quick News on my UX50 and a few RSS feeds (e.g. BBC news), I only get the headlines on the PDA, not the full article. Unlike my desktop RSS browser (Awasu) where I get linked to the full article.
Am I doing something wrong?
crazy_smeggie
04-03-2005, 04:59 AM
You might be...look at your display setting under Options/Preferences/Display. I have mine set to 'Split.'
However, since I have been rss'ing for a while, I have seen some feeds that don't give you all of the article and some don't give you anything at all.

What feeds have you found that give the full article? I've noticed the BBC doesn't :(

Most, if not all, of the feeds I show above in my screenshots, give you the full article. I still follow one concerning Reality TV that just gives the headlines.

After today? F*ck no!!!
I had 1.04 installed, retyped all of my feeds by hand and today, when updating, it hung on a feed. I was forced to reset out of it and when I did, it hosed the Quick News file(s) and everytime I tried to fire it up, it would hang where it crashed. I was forced to uninstall it.
As of right now, it hasn't made it back to my unit. I don't think I want to load that buggy software until the dev gets it right.

When it is working, it is a brilliant application. When it isn't, there's nothing worse. I am confident that these new versions will provide for ease of use combined with, hopefully, my UX-50-specific test issues/suggestions. Hopefully, we will all benefit from this.

The new version (1.08f) is much faster and it will have some UX-50-specific fixes as well. They are improving this app each day which is all you can really expect out of a developer. I think they are addressing the issues rather nicely, I might add. The issues I have submitted have already been addressed and fixed which pleases me immensely!!!

Avantgo and iSilo allow you to download news to read later on your PDA. They're not true RSS feeds--but if you don't have wireless on your pda, it's probably a moot point.

well...honestly...having the news compiled into one interface like that allows for a lot more efficiency. Who cares about whether it is Hi-Res or not. It's not a video game. Holdem' is low-res and black and white and its the game I play the most on my UX at the moment.

Version 1.08 was released earlier today. If you had an earlier version on your unit THAT DOESN'T HAVE FEEDS THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP, use Uninstall Manager to remove it from your UX. Then install 1.08. The enhancements are significant and I believe just short of one or two things (that will be fixed) it is the app I had hoped it would be.
Try it - you'll like it. And if it crashes again, I would have to believe something else is causing you to have issues.

It's pretty big and depending on how many feeds you monitor, it can go well over a meg. That's why I felt it needed to be on the Memstick.
They know about the issue and it will likely be fixed in the next release. It's certainly not a big deal.

crazy_smeggie

Why do you put things on Memory Stick instead of Int. Media?
Because I have a 1 GB stick and I like to keep as much RAM available as possible. I generally have around 7.5 MB RAM free.
I put all of my pictures and videos in Internal Media and pretty much everything else on the stick with the exception of apps like Agendus, PocketTunes and alarm-based apps that don't work from the stick.

Also, I selected Faster Downloads box and it seems to update a lot faster. How come there is an option for it? Shouldn't it be always on? Or is it not downloading the whole article? I didn't find that on the manual as the manual seems to be for an older version.

A. You don't. Select an update and it will automagically invoke your defined network connection.
2. IHow come your top right menu shows all those feeds listed? Is it because you have unread messages in those? Cause mine only shows the ones that have unread messages.
A. I used the Preferences section to define how I wanted my display to react. Check your display preferences.

I don't know because the Hotsync functionality is something I won't use. You should check all of your settings and if it still doesn't do what it is supposed to do, email the developer so that THEY know to fix it in the next release.
Of course I have Faster Downloads turned on and yes, it rocks!!

It's all about the convenience of having it all organized into one simple interface. I find it a hassle to go to diff websites. What I dont like is how some feeds are pointless. It'll be like "Pope is buried", when you click on it, it'll say "Visit site for more info.". Freaking annoying.
