Well think next month I'm going to go for the SJ33. Quick question, should I just keep my Palm software and do a sync to get my new Clie upto where I am with my existing IIIxe?

Will that work? Or do I need to install the Clie version of desktop?

Install the Clie desktop right over the old one. This will preserve your data and install the drivers to sync the Clie.

In addition to installing the Clie version of Desktop, as swagner said, I would also copy your palm/backup folder to a safe location, and delete the contents of the original before your first sync.

Your PIM data (datebook, address, todo, and memo) will be preserved and then you can reinstall all the apps separately. Doing it this way will help guard against any incompatabilities. Most apps will work just fine, but a few Palm-specific apps (ROM updates, FlashPro) will not.

If you have a lot of info stored in app databases, install them individually from your copied backup folder.

Also check out Tanker Bob's page at http://www.tankerbob.com/palm/pda_migration.htm. It's not the exact same handheld upgrade, but it's basically the same as what you're doing.

I had a IIIxe prior to getting my SJ20 in January. I am not here to argue the point, but I would certainly NOT recommend installing the Sony desktop software. I don’t see any reason to do so. If I recall correctly, the Sony software version is behind the current Palm desktop version. Besides that, you KNOW Palm will come out with updates, and you can bet your stock options that Sony won’t! The Palm desktop package contains Hotsync v4.0.4, Install Tool v4.0.0, and Desktop 4.1.0. I have also read about people having sync problems with the Sony desktop software. Unless you have a **compelling** reason to load the Sony Desktop software, I would certainly refrain from doing so!

When I did the switch from IIIxe to CLIE, I just plugged my CLIE in and hit the Hotsync button. Everything transferred perfectly! Of course, I’ve been using BackupBuddy since it was first released… ;-)

The only thing you might want to load from the Sony CD is the Memstick SCSI driver. I think it is under MS Export heading on the CD. Wander through the menus until you find it. I don’t have the CD here at work, so I can’t exactly walk you through it. The SCSI driver allows you to use your CLIE as a $200 Memory Stick reader/writer. It’s quite handy if you like to bring files back and forth between home & work. (That is, assuming you have a Memory Stick for your CLIE – I have 2!)

Additionally, I would agree with the comments made by others regarding the copying of your Palm/username/backup folder prior to hotsyncing. I always take that precaution whenever I make major changes. It's just a good idea!

I also moved from a IIIxe to a SJ30 a few months ago. What I did was:
1. backup my IIIxe data
2. uninstalled Palm desktop
3. installed Clie desktop
4. copy folders (datebook, address, etc.) to my new *username* folder
5. hotsync

It worked well for me

Did all your programs come over as well? That's what I'm really concerned with, or maybe I may just start from scratch as most of them are really old anyways...???

My old programs all came over, because I use BackupBuddy...
