Leather if you want leather and metal if you want metal!
the leather I got is top folding, whereas the metal is side hinged making it impossible to hold your Clie properly.

Not impossible, I use and hold my clie just fine with the innopocket metal case, metal is the only way for me, the innopocket case doesn't make the clie much thicker at all, so i still carry it around in my pocket.

You gotta get the Rhinoskin metal case. It's profile is a lot slimmer than I expected, and it has holes cut in it for the various functions, ms, jogdial, etc. highly recommend it.

1. Personal taste/style- which looks more like 'you'?
2. User environment- Where/how do you CARRY youre PDA?Metal is more crush and bump resistant resistant, while neither is especially water resistant (although droplets of water can stain leather.)
3. Function- How do you really USE your PDA? Will the 'book-style' hinge get in the way? If you do a lot of one-handed book reading, it might. Does one style lend itself to better function for your needs than the other? (I also find that the book style is sometimes less comfortable than top hinged)
Heck, and don't just stop there! There are micro-fiber cases, metal-framed cases (Smarter Cases), plastic cases, pouches, and more!

Case made by EB cases is very nice, if you think you need a case at all. www.ebcases.com
I have one; very nice.

I've got a leather case from Sena, http://www.senacases.com, and I love it. The Clie can be cradled withteh case on, and it doesn't have the annoying leather flap that most craddlable cases have. The whole thing just slides right in.
Also, the case sports a nice magnetic closure that feels really secure.
