Should I get an NX model? Right now I have an NR70v which I recieved, free, about a week ago. It's in good condition but I've been reading about how the NX series is so great. I'm just wondering if I should make the move to an NX70v or 73v.

Really, all I'm going to be using it for is for watching videos (I'm using Kinoma right now), listen to music, store images, play games, and if I'm bored, play around with the camera. I guess I'll use the actual organizer features a little too.

Right now, the main things bringing me towards it are the CF slot, the mpeg player, and OS 5 (I'm assuming it also has a better battery life too).

Is it likely I can get an NX70v, or even an NX73v off ebay for around $150-200 Canadian? I have no income since I'm still a student and screw work for now so price is a factor.

You may be able to get an NX70 for closer to $200 Canadian off Ebay. I definitely recommend the upgrade--you don't know what you're missing until you try it! Keep in mind that you'll also need to fork out some cash for a screen saver to protect your investment, a memory stick, and I highly recommend investing in JackFlash. Some people might argue that you don't "need" a memory stick, but you will likely find yourself frustrated without one, and a 128 MB or less stick can be acquired pretty cheaply.

Of course, if you REALLY wanted to upgrade, you'd save up for an NX80... :)

Sell the NR70 if it's in good condition, on ebay it's probably around 100 Cnd.

Agree with NX80V upgrade, or NX73V, not less. Sony announced they are leaving the production of new units in Japan too. So, the rare NX80V/73V were produced in 2003, and the available units are more than scarce these days. Refurbished units scaled up in price since months ago. Now maybe they will be more difficult to find at good price & condition.

1 got my nx60 for $107 shipped :D
i figure the extra $50 that it would of cost me to buy the nx70 can go for a 4mp camera that i plan on buying soon :)

I bought a NX80V on EBay (just received last night) for $185. Only problem was a broken power switch. I loaded Default Capture and I am good to go.

I have been looking for a NX80V for over a year (at a decent price that is). I may have to sell one of my other CLIEs now. My wife thinks I am out of control. I am starting to believe her.

Don't give in! Keep all the Clies you can! Don't give in! Wives are like that. They don't understand our gadget fixation just as much as we don't get their fixation on shiny things, shoes, and purses..... :D

Most gadgets are shiny. Almost all of mine are. Actually so are many of my shoes.... I wonder if that's a trend :p

Glassman, tell your wife to be happy she doesn't share a small apartment with 7 computers (3 Windows, 2 FreeBSD, 1 Mac Mini, 1 Windows laptop) Your gadgets are tiny and cute... it's okay :)

Not to mention (2) NX60s and a NR70. I just sold my TH55.

Ok dang it, you DO have too many! Send some my way!!!!!!! :D :D

Kitten, my wife finally gave me my own room. 3 Windows desktops, 1 2003 Server, 2 old LCIIIs, and a laptop. Not to mention all the crap in my junk closet. Glad to see there are some female gadgeteers here as well!!

Well, I've been thinking about it and I think I'll just stick with my NR. Thanks anyways. I guess I was just caught up with all the extra features that I don't neccessarily need right now. Sure, it's great but I wasn't much of a PDA person in the first place. I suppose I'll reconsider it later, but for now, I'm happy with what I have.

Looks like you made your choice but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyway. If you decide to upgrade and stay with Sony, go for the NX80. IMO it has the best combination of features of the unfortunately defunct line.

If you're happy with what you have and aren't finding your self saying "I sure wish I had..." then your gut feeling of sticking with what you have a little longer is probably good. Just keep in mind that NX80's are becoming scarce.

In a perfect world, there'll soon be smart phones with the kind of high resolution we have now on the Sony. When (if?) that happens, you'll see me at the cell phone shop!

Ok, I gave into the NX. I found a cheap NX70v for a little below $150 Canadian and am going to sell the NR. Now I have a question about the CF cards. Can you use any brand with this model? I'm planning on getting a 512.

i think you can use all the brands.. except it's really annoying to patch the NX70 to use CF as a storage... (need to patch the CF lib, then the applications that you want them to use the CF slot, takes up some spaces)

On the other hand, NX73 and 80 can use the CF as a storage out of box, no problem. just a suggestion..

Ok I can't hold it in any more. My wife also says I am out of control. I am trying to get my NX73 fixed and I have an NR70 and yes a TH55. If my NX get's fixed I am thinking of selling my NR70 and using the funds to buy another TH55 as a back-up. That means i'll have 2 TH55's and one NX73. BTW I had just purchased a beautiful Covertec case for my NR70 and it looks sooo good. Why is it so hard to just let go?

Ok, so I'm now going to buy a Kingston 1024mb cf card (to be used entirely for video and music) and a Lexar 64mb memory stick (for pictures, programs, recorded video/audio, etc.). Does this sound like a good amount?

I think your MS size is far too small. Especially if you are going to backup to MS. You can get a 512 MB MS Pro for a little more than $50. Granted CF is cheaper than MS, but you can't do a system restore from the CF without the CF drivers loaded. However, you can from the MS.

How large is the backup? Do you think 128 might be fine?

Also, on the NX70, you couldn't do a complete restore from an MS-Pro (assuming a hard reset or some other unfortunate incident) because the NX70 needs drivers to access a Pro stick.

I used a 128MB stick for quite a while in my NX's. It was fine. The backups will be about as large as what you have in RAM (in the NX70's case, no more than ~11MB each).

Be sure to search the archives here for information on getting the CF card working in an NX70. It takes some additional third party drivers and such. (Plus, if you want to use the Clie video player, you have to find a <ahem> "borrowed" version to install on the NX70 that can access the CF slot. The NX70 CF slot was severely crippled out of the box. That was the main reason I upgraded to an NX80.)

Alright, I can get a cheap 128mb stick so I'm just going to use that. I guess the only questions now are: how large are the hacks and "borrowed" programs, and do they support full screen?
